from their website:
Quote
The Audio Nirvana 'Classic 6.5' ($198/pr) has a frequency response from 43 hz to almost 20,000 hz. You can expect at least 98 db efficiency in any of our cabinets. It handles 30 watts continuous RMS (normal listening level will be about 1/10 watt). Impedance is 8 ohms. Voice coil is 1.2 inches (30 mm). Magnet weight is 3.2 lbs. Total weight is 8 lbs. The cone is made of paper. The surround is accordion style and made of treated cloth. The dust cap is a specially coated fabric material. The frame is cast aluminum.

The Audio Nirvana ' Super 6.5 Cast Frame' ($178/pr) has a frequency response from 48 hz to almost 20,000 hz. You can expect at least 97 db efficiency in any of our cabinets. It handles 30 watts continuous RMS (normal listening level will be about 1/10 watt). Impedance is 8 ohms. Voice coil is 1.2 inches (30.5mm). Magnet weight is 3.2 lbs. Total weight is 8.0 lbs. The cone is made of paper. The surround is accordion style and made of treated cloth. The phase plug is copper anodized, machined solid aluminum. In addition to the stronger, less resonant cast aluminum frame, the 'Super 6.5 Cast Frame' is an improved design over the steel frame 'Super 6.5'. It is more detailed, more extended, and smoother.

im using a classic 6.5 AN and fostex with whizzer cone before, i did sell it na yung fostex taga laguna yung nakabili...compare with my fostex before mas happy na ako sa 6.5 AN classic.... na try ko sa open baffle na rin medyo low lang yung bass but put it on a enclosure na right yung size lumalabas yung bass niya than sa open baffles....for my 6lu8 na amp....what i can say....nakakapuyat lang....hehe

May pros and cons ba ang fostex at AN?

you can never go wrong with any AN drivers with a proper enclosure. for my ears classic drivers has better bass response than super cast frame models. My classic 10" can rival the SQ of my super 12 CF.....pero pag pinag sabay sila!!!!!!!nirvana effect na :o >:D >:D >:D

Whizzer Cone

So what we have in his Audio Nirvana, Super 8, Minimonitor is a highly efficient (98dB/watt in this enclosure, he claims), full range, eight inch paper driver, with a whizzer cone set in a dual- concentric mode on the same voice coil, with a metal phase plug in the center. Actually, what is called a phase plug is a mechanical device that manages to align most of the high frequency waves so as to correct for arrival time anomalies produced by the whizzer cone. The phase plug really doesn't effect phase so much as eliminate time smearing. To correct for out-of-phase a mechanical device would have to find the outer cone going in and out in reverse (or nearly) of the whizzer cone. That can't actually be the case as both cones are affixed to the same voice coil, the difference in their mass and diameter making a mechanical crossover. But a center plug can correct for treble frequencies coming in part directly from the whizzer cone's front, mixing with back waves that then reflect off the larger cone behind it. Lots of manufacturers use phase-plugs, even on less complex (no whizzer cone) models, to adjust the arrival times of frequencies generated by the inner and outer regions of a driver. See the Parts Express website www.parts-express.com, or Madisound's www.madisound.com.

Phase Plug

No one has yet come up with a quick, two syllable phrase for anti-time-smearing-plug, so it is known in the trade as a phase plug. (Perhaps "nose cone" would suit the purpose better.) In this case it is lathe-turned from a solid ingot of aluminum (to avoid the ringing that comes from hollow plugs), that is copper-plated for performance and cosmetic purposes (Aluminum, un-plated, gives off a moldy-looking white powder oxide that looks crummy and can find its way into the voice coil gap.). This plated and lacquered nose-cone is bolted and glued to the center of the speaker's chassis. Theoretically, the plug deflects the high frequencies from the frontal waves of the whizzer cone so they take a path less like a flashlight beam, and in so doing arrive at the listener at about the same time as the back waves of the whizzer cone reflecting off the larger cone. I'm not up on the math of exactly how this works, but if having a wide and deep sound stage is any measure of the success of this speaker's ability to eliminate time-smearing, then I'd say it is a pretty successful design in that regard.

I have not heard the classic vs the cast frame, but knowing David, he never sells a more expensive AN driver if it doesnt significantly sound better. The classic series is the most superior sounding ferrite magnet series that he sells. Regarding the whizzer cone... Classic series is David's attempt to reproduce the legendary driver Western Electric/Altec.

As said in AN's website:

An updated version of the legendary Western Electric 755A and Altec 755A.

A full-range speaker that uses no whizzer cone or phase plug and yet still reaches 20,000 hz.
A special proprietary design makes this possible.

@shrek7,

TIA

DD's instruction:
Quote
Break-in the speakers by playing music, at moderate listening levels, for the first 30 hours.  DO NOT use pink noise or any 'audiophile' break-in procedure. You can play the speakers louder after 30 hours.  Full break-in does not occur until around 100 hours.  They will continue to sound better and better, over time, as the suspension becomes more flexible.

You just turn your amplifier on, feed any signal, play at low to medium volume basta may lumalabas na sound sa speaker mo, pwedeng kahit anong source ang gamit, pero kung gusto mo ng pang burn in talaga na cd, eh meron namang nabibili nyan, may mga reference cd for that purpose which plays pink noise atbp.

suggest to use a dynamic sounding music as reference (good lows, mids, highs). to fully break in or loosen the still tightly pressed mechanical parts (spider, surround edge...), esp. for woofer, full range
