the lower priced pioneers are ok for movies but not much for music listening, their flagship receiver though (vsx-49txi) is a different story :)

what about harman kardon AR-1550?  i saw it at podium's soundroom (5th flr) going for around P18k, but they will give it at P16.1k cash.  50w output daw but i read from a website that 40w lang.  it handles DD, dts, and even DPL2 daw.

i told the guy that it's for a small room only, so he recommended the harman above, with a JBL SCS-138 5.1 set.  P16.2k cash.  parang mahina yung subwoofer na kasama: 100 watts RMS, 40-120hz, pero i couldnt feel any pounding when they played 'saving private ryan'.

any comments on either the harman or the 5.1 JBL?

the harman kardon is high current and i can attest to its musicality and yes it does use prologic II, but i think you might want to look elsewhere for the speakers, try getting speakers with relatively high sensitivity (89dB up).

hi JOHN5479!  the JBL SCS 138 satellites sensitivity is rated at 86db, its center channel at 88db.  which brands/models would you recommend that's in the same price range (P15-16k, including active sub).  thanks!

yup thanks. So does this mean that getting a Denon 1803 or an Onkyo SR600 is more worth it that getting a Yamaha RXV1300?

I think the Denon and Onkyo sells for around 24+ whil ethe Yamaha 30+?

I'd still go for a Yamaha 1300/2300. :)

mind telling us why?

192khz DACs; higher wattage than the models 1200,2200,3200; 2 zones; the number of I/O terminals, number of DSPs, the clean look.  :)
And with the 3300, it remembers different volume settings for different inputs, like say a different volume for DVDs and another for CDs.

Aside from the specs, I still have to see a major problem with Yamaha receivers.

Checking around, you'll see some brands with big problems with certain series.
As someone had told me when I was still a newbie: "if you want to be sure, get a Yamaha, di ka magkakamali dun".  :)

Are the models (1300,2300,3300) out yet locally?
Last I asked wala pa daw balita.  :-\

they say it's better that way. video switching on the avr should be a last resort if your display does not support multiple video in connections

I see thanks guys... so what's the main difference between the 1200 and the 1300 yamahas?

These are the major differences that I know of:

RXV1200
80 watts, 96khz DAC, 2 buttons on front panel for input selection, 22 DSPs

RXV1300
100 watts, 192khz DAC, JOG dial on front panel for input selection , 25 DSPs

 :)

For the question regarding 192khz and 96khz DACs:

The more khz and more bits, the better the decoding for the audio soundtrack. The Clock (expressed in Khz) is the audio bandwidth and the amount of bits (20 or 24) is the audio resolution.

Going back to linear algebra, the bandwidth will be your x-axis, and the number of points along the y-axis is the resolution. The objective of the DAC is to convert those 0s and 1s into an analog waveform. The more points you plot in your graph, the smoother your audio signal will be.

DVD soundtracks whether dolby digital or DTS, are often 96-20. Super Audio CDs are the ones who really take advantage of the 192-24 resolution.

Check your player and your receiver if they can produce 192-24. Of course, this conversion is only possible when you use the digital outs of your system.
You wonder why it still not good enough after spending P1M.

Don't be misled by the 80-wpc RXV1200.  Yamaha rates the outputs of its AVR's closer to the truth than say a Denon or Onkyo.

To illustrate, the RXV1200 has a 360-watt power transformer. It takes a Denon 3802 (400-watts) to top that.  The power transformers of the 2802 (rated at 90-wpc) and 1802 (80-wpc) don't even come close.

Point is, the RXV1200 is more than enough even for sala sized rooms.

Check-out mo na lang

I just checked Michael's audio here in HK, the Onkyo SR600 sells for only 2780HK, around 19000+ only... The Denon 1803 sells at 3000+ more expensive... according to the guy I talked to, Denon is more expensive because of it's brand, but the Onkyo is a better performer. They didn't have Yamaha's, so I wasn't able to check how much.

Guys,

How come no one among you recommend a "Pioneer" for HT/Audio receiver? Aint that good ba sya to be not  included among Onkyo, Denon & Yamaha.

I'm curious co'z I'm going to audition this coming sat VSX-D811S-S at Listening Room (Mega). Can you give me some more insights re: pioneer before it's too late.

Your opinions are very much welcome. Thanks.

caycski

i just purchased this tol for 21,999.00. this one is excellent its features are the ffg: 120 w x 6 at 8 ohms, DD-ex, DTS-es, with 7 speaker output very enveloping talaga ang sorround nya, with ability to extract signals from the R and L sorround channels and placing in the SBR and SBL channels,  all channels have pre-outs; meaning you can actually hooked it to a more powerful ampli should you want to use it for a real movie theater as big as theaters in sm siguro, its bass is very involving, but yet very crispy, dvd audio ready na sha with a 96/24 DAC.

my units are all pioneer and i got no qualms of recommending it. I think pre, with its price, this is the best model so far.

I'm eyeing the Onkyo TX-SR600 and I was wondering what other AVRs are comparable to it? Any idea how much the TX-SR600's going for these days? :)

What receivers are comparable to the Onkyo TX-SR600? I've been reading extremely different opinions about this receiver. One side says it is very good while others say it is really bad so what's the beef and what are my alternatives?

I was going to get that same receiver until I encountered the mixed reviews.  The power rating is overstated daw especially when using all 6-channels.  Still, it seems to be a good receiver for the money.

Price and featurewise, I think it is comparable to a Denon 1803.

Specs-wise the Denon AVR-1803 looks competent enough but a bit too much for me. A bit too much in the sense that I dont need an amp for another room. Meron bang walang non-multiroom amp ang Denon with the same feature set? :)

Yamaha's RX-V630 looks good also on paper. Ditto on Marantz SR5200 but the lack of component video in/out plunges it down my list but how much is it?

What other brands are at the same feature level as the Onkyo TX-SR600?

We got the ff brands nailed down.

Onkyo
Marantz
Yamaha
Denon

Ano pa? Harman Kardon, NAD(?), Pioneer and...?

onkyo. all 6.1 formats are covered, OSD pa.  ;)

I think the denon also covers all 6.1 formats... wala lang OSD. Isn't it that Onkyo's are more for Audio enthusiasts? I plan to use the receiver for movies. Would the Onkyo do?
Forgive the ignorance but what does OSD stand for and what is its function?
