ST Glass connector....is it worth it?
« on: Jan 13, 2013 at 07:19 PM »
My new transport has an ST Glass connector and my D/A pre has an input for it. Though I'm quite happy with the VDH digital coaxial right now is there any performance gain if I switch to the ST Glass?

Problem lang nga is where to acquire the cable as it is very elusive daw in our shores.

Any thoughts guys? Technical info as well will be welcome

Is ST glass the same as the toslink except the material?

AFAIK, it should be the same as the toslink. You can try the optic fiber ones muna. I know there are glass fiber talaga kaso it's expensive. One thing i've learned from master Shifu Stagea, your toslink connection (the one in your transport and DAC) should be capable of transmitting and receiving 24 bit signals if you plan on using it for studio master recordings. I've tried both digital coax and toslink, there was no distinct audible diffrence in my previous system, perhaps because it was just a short run (1 meter).

Weird because there is no Toslink out. It has the ff though: XLR balanced, Digital Coaxial and the aforementioned ST-Glass connector. Tried out the Toslink Fiber Optic in my previous Transport and it sounds thinner in comparison with the Digital Coax which has more fullness of the sound.

Tama si master Nelson.  It should be the same as toslink.  Hirap nga yata mag-hanap nitong cable na 'to.  You can check this eBay ad.

Maybe so sir, but being the same fibre optic platform (difference lies in type of termination), you may get the same thinner sound.  I suggest you stick to your current digital coax.

pareho lang sir, connector lang yung ST... it's commonly used for network cabling, so mas madali maghanap nito locally sa mga cabling contractors - they can order or fabricate the length that you require ... it will have no difference in performance with the Toslink, which is basically just different connector

only advantage of fiber optic is that it's not susceptible to interference (e.g. from power cables, fluorescent lamps, etc.) and can be used at longer lengths (up to 2km for multi-mode fibers, similar to what is used on Toslink cables) ... by the way, fiber optic cables are using stretched glass as core, so don't bend it like the copper cables

Saw one in HMR Sucat awhile ago. Php390.00 but the catch is that it is 25 meters. It don't want to bundle 25 meters worth of cabling at the back of my CD Transport. The distance that it has to my D/A is 6 inches so I guess I have to hide almost all 25 meters. The color is eye catching orange and the brand is AT&T telecom.

I guess I'll just stick to what I currently have. Thanks guys.

that is the usual color ... one way to differentiate it from other cables, but for PhP 390.00 that is very cheap ... if it's second hand however make sure to test it ... simple lang naman testing sa fiber optic cable - use a flashlight on one end and see if light comes out on the other end

I used to have one in the early 90's, it used to be AT&T glass fiber optic cable, rarely aint much of a difference in SQ w/ a Toslink cable as they just have different connectors. Coaxial sounds better. Just my 2 cents  ;)

Just updating this thread...bit the bullet and got myself an ST Glass Fiber connector by Blackbox Industries in a 2 meter length and ceramic connectors.

Used it to connect the my Classe CDT1 Transport to the Enlightened Audio Designs Ovation D/A pre. Will post impressions soon compared to my Van Den Hul digital coax cable
