In 2008, they were praising the Patton BD. A few years later, they're describing the Patton BD as "dismal."
The latter assessment is more accurate as the Patton BD was in fact a DNR mess. It's just that the reviewers' eyes weren't too used to seeing a good HD picture in the early days of HD home video.
So now, here's the remastered Patton BD:
Release date: Nov. 6, 2012
As this version of 'Patton' is the highly anticipated remastering of what many Blu-ray aficionados would describe as a "dismal" release back in 2008, it's safe to say this section will be where so many of those let down will look first. It is also safe to say that this gorgeous remastering not only corrects the issues from before, but also makes 'Patton' look better than it ever has, and will be a relief to those left unimpressed by the film's initial foray into high definition. http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/7725/patton_remastered.html I'll cut my fellow reviewer Marty Liebman some slack regarding his glowing assessment of the original 2008 release of Patton. Back then, we were all in awe of seeing our favorite classics in high definition for the first time, and perhaps more willing to overlook some blatant picture quality issues. The fact is, that initial Blu-ray edition looks bad—smeary, overly de-noised, robbed of detail... This new release is how Patton should've looked on Blu-ray all along. The clarity from the 65mm image is simply extraordinary from start to finish. The weft of cloth, the intricacies of the sets, the dirt on helmets, the detail in the actors' facial features—with the grain structure intact, everything is tighter, more palpable, better resolved. The tonal qualities of the picture are noticeably improved as well, with punchier contrast, denser colors, and more accurate skin tones. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Patton-Blu-ray/55325/#Review
