Will a Dolby Atmos receiver play a DTS soundtrack in Atmos format?

For example, if you have a BD of 300: Rise of an Empire, the only English track is in DTS HD MA:

Audio
English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit)
French: Dolby Digital 5.1 (448 kbps)
Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 (448 kbps)
Portuguese: Dolby Digital 5.1
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/300-Rise-of-an-Empire-Blu-ray/96080/

Will you be able to play that DTS HD MA track in Atmos format?

Even if you can, I'm thinking the sound placements will be inaccurate, because the software will just be guessing the placements, unlike true Atmos metadata encoded on the BD, where coordinates are assigned to the sound at source.

Similar to a 2.0 source played back with multi-channel Dolby Pro-Logic IIx vs. a true Dolby 7.1 source played back as Dolby 7.1.  The matrixed 2.0 sound can never be as good as the true discrete 7.1 sound.

So the best option would be to double dip on the same title when a new BD with true Dolby Atmos sound is released?  Walang katapusang gastos yan.

Makha ngang walang ganun ang Atmos. hindi pa ata niya kaya. So ang lalabas sa system mo, is yun 5.1 or 7.1 pa lang din. Though in the works na daw yun add-on box sa mga non-Atmos type of receiver. Hindi ko lang alam ang connection kung paano. Maski yun front height or width, prologic din ang gamit.

Sa tingin ko maglalabas ng ceiling mounted speakers specifically for the Atmos.

Onkyo is planning to drop the Audyssey feature sa coming models (possibly entry levels) nila to give way to Atmos. Mabigat kasi sa processing ang Atmos.

I think you can use any speakers, whether the in-ceiling versions or the bookshelf types with proper mounting. I am currently building the mk sound demo room and the owner plans to use the triple surround for the ceiling speakers. Sana matuloy.

they use an Onkyo 3030 at their showroom. compared to a standard theater, their setup blows the standard theater away! (lamang lang ang sinehan sa screen size) but compared to at Atmos movie house, it comes close. it really provides a sound sphere, not just 360 sound. btw, Toyama's setup was a 7.2.4 all B&W except for 1 Onkyo subwoofer, source was an Onkyo BD-SP809, and the display was a JVC X35 projected to an 80 or 90 inch screen.

I was also there earlier and imho it's way better than atmos cinemas in greenhills. The side and rear surround are just above ear level, not our usual 6' clearance. That is why at the dinosaur scene , it feels like you are running with them. Major revamp sa speaker placement as atmos wants the side and rear surround as low as possible for us to notice the sound from the top. Panalo talaga!

Transformers and atmos demo disc sir.  Yeah the screen was a little small and the pj was not even calibrated kaya medyo grainy but its still awesome! Maganda talaga pag malaki ang room, its approx 6m width x10m length by 9' height kaya maganda yung surround sound. Nice chairs too but very expensive

yeah. I still noticed some image noise despite the high-end gears like Onkyo 3030, BD-SDP809, and JVC X35. I also agree about the chairs. very comfy!  ;D

Here's the video counterpart that will complement Atmos; finally something that supports deep color and high dynamic range.
http://www.dolby.com/us/en/technologies/dolby-vision.html

Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and XBox Video are expected to have this soon.

Local dimming LED or OLED panels are required to make full use of this technology. For projectors, laser is the current benchmark for this tech.

No, the demo used flat panels. Cinemas need laser projectors though to reach the required intensity.

The actual image quality wouldn't be visible by using the demo images alone. The reason for this is because the image format used to capture the difference does not resolve nearly as much (and most devices can't anyway).
