In 1986, UP won the UAAP championship thanks to the core of the San Beda Red Cubs 1982 NCAA Juniors champion team ( Magsanoc, Altamirano, Paras, Wenceslao(?) )

Fast forward to 2015, UP is now powered by three former Red Lions and mentored by an ex Red Cub Rensy Bajar. ;)  And they won 2 straight games into the season.

Just an observation from a Bedan. LOL

No matter how this season goes for UP, this is one of the most liveliest & hardworking MAROONS team I've seen in a long time - both on offense and defense.

A new coaching staff plus hosting the UAAP this year doing them wonders so far.

Agree!! Too bad Jet Manuel's 3pt shots in Q4 didn't connect. Else...it would have been a different ballgame.

UST's gem is Ed Daquioag! Reminds me of former PBA player Dodong Postanes in terms of built

Agree, sirs. It was really great to see the Fighting Maroons play with a lot of energy and heart. Despite the loss, this should be an exciting season for UP.. for a change. :) UP Fight!

Congrats to UST! They have quite a player there in Daquioag.

Postanes is a good comparison, though one doesn't have to go that far in past.

The PBA's Denok Miranda & Mark Barroca comes to mind ...... Daquioag looks and plays like Barroca - matigas ang katawan, mababa ang dribble & has similar ways in creating separation from the defense to get shots off ...... Barroca is faster though & has a deadlier mid-range game.

Prince Rivero thriving on Juno Sauler's system whereas his fierce NCAA Juniors rival Arvin Tolentino is not getting the minutes from Bo Perasol anymore.

I have never seen a UP Team as resilient and hingry as this one, dario is one heck of a player, no superstars, no problem, they just couldnt die, im a Thomasian but i feel sinwerte lang ang UST kanina, di ko type yung ferrer, pa cute ang style ng laro he could have dominated anyone defending him pero pala,ya lamya sa kilos nya

Bakit parang ang UST di na yata naka tapat ng magaling na point guard?

Jo, total breakdown by DLSU on Q3. Nash did his homework. The usual suspects did their job but for me the big difference was Prince (No. 17 Center/ Left-Handed). FEU also killed DLSU with their 3s

Indeed, matagal-tagal na din mula nung huling nagkaroon nang bluechip PG ang USTe ..... the last one was probably Dale Singson. Jeric Fortuna turned out okay, but not on the level of Singson & David.

Alam naman nating lahat kung paano ang takbo nang college recruitment for the last decade ...... tycoons & businessmen doing the recruitment instead of school officials. It's extremely unethical and IMO should have been the real target of Sen. Pia Cayetano's bill. But this belongs to another forum on another day. ;)

Beg to differ somewhat on Kevin Ferrer, brader ....... the guy plays forward (SF) and this position is usually the one who gets the least ball time on the court. Not unless you're Lebron or Durant, SF's just dont get much plays called for them and Ferrer is no different.

The nice thing about Ferrer is the willingness to go after rebounds ....... the one real downside to his game, he tends to fall in love with the 3-point shot during certain games.

Perhaps im just expecting a lot from him, kanina kase parang ang daming tapon na bola dahil ang luwag ng hawak nya, or maybe Daquioag is just too aggressive kanina na overshadow yung contribution nya

Sana maka tsamba naman ng magaling na PG ang UST sa mga susunod na panahon, parang sila lang yata ang team na walang magaling na PG

Subido had good credentials in high school BUT he's clearly being overshadowed by a "hardworker" like Daquiaog...

Is there a newcomer being developed by USTe to eventually take over Abdul's slot?

Kevin Ferrer has tremendous upside to him. He is even better than Troy Rosario overall, his defense is better and can attack/post like a big man. Rosario, though, has a more consistent outside shot.

Looking at the top teams, it seems relatively common for this generation to have a 6'4" or 6'5" small forward who can slash and shoot threes. And a center, who's at least 6'6". Back in the day, that height was already the tallest player in the PBA.

Masyado pa lax ang USTe.  Minsan mahina ang basketball IQ ng players.  Marami sa kanila, gusto umiskor.  They had a 7 point lead heading to the last 4 mins ata, imbes na magset-up sila, nagmamadali.  Walang time management. O0

Great come from behind win by the Tigers!  Lumabas pagkabwakaw ni Kiefer dito.  Pati kahinaan ni Bobo Perasol magcoach

UST made a lot of 3's, while DLSU missed a lot of FT's ...... bad combination for DLSU. I still fully expect DLSU to make the F4, they're too talented and deep.

It's a make or break year for UST. It's the final year for their top guys & there's absolutely no one to take the reins next year.

Unlike a few other schools, UST doesn't play the tycoon/crony game ...... If UST is to win a championship, it's this year or not for a loooong while.

sana may lumabas naman na player at magulang ng player na magpapahalaga sa prinsipyo para naman may chance ang UST na makakuha ng players na magagaling. a bit out of topic but I recalled during the first year of dindin Santiago sa college volleyball UST sya yung kapatid nya sa high school UST din, yung allysa valdez at kim fajardo UST high school din, after a year, Dindin transferred to NU, kasama kapatid nya, both tunred out to be the star player of NU, Alyssa ended up with Ateneo in college and is touted to be the best femal volleyball player sa country, kin is one of the best player of la sale. If UST is spending money and turning recrtuiment ala commercial way, malamang walang tatalo sa UST volleyball team for the longest time, ganyan din siguro nangyayari sa basketball team nila.

I recalled nuon, ready na si Jeron Teng to play for UST tapos naiba bigla istorya.

^ Brader, Jeron Teng landing in UST then, was a longshot ....... older brother Jeric was already the face of UST. Jeron was an alpha-scorer & needs his own team to lead.

When Danding entered the picture - tapos na ang boxing ....... it was also during that time that dad Alvin Teng "suddenly" became part of the SMCorp's then ABL team.

Like I've long ranted here, things like these are absolutely illegal in the US NCAA ..... even a small thing such as candy or clothes - bawal, para academic reasons lang ang maging dahilan nang pagpasok nang isang player (see the NBA's Steve Novak recent story about Billy Donovan recruiting him at FSU).

Sen. Pia Cayetano's bill had good intentions, but it was far from getting to the rootcause of the Pingoy issue ........ disclosure of all benefits of student-athletes get and removal of all these tycoons/cronies from school athletics is a good place to start.

=================================================================

DLSU on rough sailing so far ...... sayang, kung hindi nag "ligang labas" itong si Ben Mbala, I'd easily pick DLSU to win it all. Mbala is that good.

Still, DLSU is too talented not to contend this year or at least make it to the F4.
