This is a bit OT but given a similar budget, will a set of really good 5.1 speakers be better than a 7.2 in a 25sqm movie area?

I'm thinking in terms of quantity/quality ratio, like whether to spread the budget to more speakers or getting better ones but fewer speakers.

it will always be quality over quantity for me.....

I would get an upscale 5.1 vs an ok 7.1.

It's easier to save up for the extra 2 channels in the future, than be infected by the PDVD plague of UPGRADATITIS.

hahaha :D

Or sorry, I should rephrase. Given a similar budget, would you get a really good 5.1 system (e.g. B&W CM series) or a nice 7.2 (e.g. B&W 600 series).

My room is 25 sqm too and i am using 5.3 channels. My take is quality, quantity can be added later if funds permit.

IMO, 2 or 2.1 is better for audio, 5.1 up is also good for audio and best for movies. Everybody knows the movie Starwars Phantom Menace Podrace scene and Book of Eli small house assault scene...this is a very good example showcasing surround spkr.

Not all movies requires a surround spkr, but its best you have this so that you will not miss the fun of surround channels when it is needed. Enveloping 3D sound experience really gives a thrill which 2.1 will not offer you.

Having a 5.1 system will provide you a cinematic experience compared to a 2.1 system. I will pick a very good quality 5.1 system over an ordinary 7.1 system.

another one but contra naman to 5.1 - this one is about how receivers get "outdated" so easily...

+1 on this... I dont have a big sala/ht area that would benefit a system higher than 5.1 so i concentrated on improving my 5.1 system by updating to better speakers...

Not to mention iilan lang ang source na nag-uutilize ng 7.1 and up... especially kung poor guy na katulad ko na gumagamit lang ng Jack Sparrows.. ;D

+1 this is what i'm telling a pdvd newbie whom i met last week. 7.1 bihira sa jack sparrow and malalaki pa files meaning takes time to dl. 5.1 tipid at sulit from receiver, speakers, wires etc.

5.1 dts if 8Gb up. 5.1 dts hdma if 30Gb up.

this is one reason kung bkt im not that picky about my HT setup, kse karamihan ng DL ko eh galing kay YIFY. ;D ;D but once in a while, there's the itch of watching a movie na kumpleto, so i added a very good BDP sa system and a very reliable center speaker and paminsanminsan eh nakakahingi ng mga bluray rip sa kaibigan. pero 90% of viewing experience ko eh with my lossy movie files...

May mga media na AC3 pero stereo lang. As much as possible 5.1 ang kinukuha ko, nakalagay yan sa details, you just have to read it. ;)

when i had the 838, the transformers 4 i have would output dolby true hd / atmos.

it really depends on what you get to download. if you only have 1mbps dl speed, try finding a good friend that sells blurays or has a good collection of those jack sparrows.

sa akin with regards to upgrading from 2.1 to 5.1 to 7.1 there IS. a noticeable difference  if you add 2 more channels up front than at the back. my ht room is small but I appreciate the difference. For 7.1 get a receiver that can give signals for front wides such as audyssey dsx. But I can't speak for 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 no experience with them yet.
