XLR cable suggestion
« on: Oct 23, 2015 at 09:10 PM »
I would like to try connecting my MDAC to my MF amp via XLRs. Will a cheepo DIYed IC (Neutrik plugs + Nobelle cable from Audiophile pro audio shop) which will cost around 1K for a 1.5m pair worth the while? The cheapest boutique XLR cable of that length is 6K to 10K.

Your advice please. Thanks!

With your current interconnects, may noise ba? If yes a small expense to rid of that noise is surely worth it.

Haven't tried XLRs before (that's why I posted this thread), only RCAs with my MDAC and MF amp. No noise. Works OK. But the MF amp I recently got has balanced inputs so I would like to try XLR route.

Or should I forget XLR and stick with RCA? (Both DAC and amp are fully balanced).

I wish to hear from those who have ACTUALLY compared cheepo DIYed XLR and entry level QED/Chord/Audioquest/Kimber. Thanks

yes, if your dac has ba;anced outputs and if your amp has balanced inputs, then go for it...
i have a pair of about 1.5 meter xlr cables i can lend you to try...

you can also go to any branch of "Audiophile" store, there is one at the ground floor of
SM City and there you can have these cables made to your desired lenghts using Neutrik connectors...

With balanced connectors you will notice that the spl of your system on your usual volume setting will be slightly lower and you will need to pump up the volume a little bit to get your usual spl for listening.  Noise floor of the system will be improved provided that there is no component in the chain that introduces noise to begin with. To get maximum benefits though the entire system has to use the balanced option all throughout. Noise rejection because of longer cable runs is the main benefit of going balanced.

I'm using VDH balanced XLRs and I once tried custom made ones that are longer due to the positioning of the amp. The difference in sound is very minimal to say the least. I had the custom made ones done in Audiophile in Rob Pioneer.

I also noticed that whenver you change cable brands with balanced ICs, it does not really produce that much difference unlike unbalanced connections.

balanced interconnects adresses the issue of noise above anything else,
so if you are having hum and noise issues, then this is the way forward...

Got a DIYed 1.5m XLR calbe pair from Audiophile - Neutrik plugs, Nobelle (Japan) calbe). Costed 1.2K for a pair. Sounded OK on my system.

Thanks for your inputs. :D

I have the harmonic tech midrange xlr cable and compared it with a $6k transparent xlr. Heard not much difference. It may be worth that much if you have the extra dough to spend. It sure looks awesome. I run the cheap cable with neutrik gold xlr connectirs from pre amp to amp and works just fine. So, i dont think theres much difference between xlr cables....i have to say, the expensive looks cool back there is all.

I had kimber Kable ICs between my benchmark  dac1 and Hegel h80 integrated amp. I then got xlr from cjtader.

Sound Quality improvement  was quite noticeable. As in a previous post spl was lower. However since my dac output can be adjusted, no issue in the lower spl.

I suggest trying xlr and you may not go back to RCA ICs.
