Swamp Thing Cancelled by DC Universe
A bolt from the blue has just struck Abby Arcane’s fans, as DC Universe has apparently cancelled Swamp Thing just a week into the first season. According to a report by Bloody Disgusting, “the show lost support from executives before it even aired.” Additionally, the decision shouldn’t be attributable to budget or performance on DC Universe, but to the WarnerMedia/AT&T executives not liking the direction of the show, says a report from GWW. The cast and crew supposedly received the notification of the cancellation of the series late last night.
UPDATE: Though the streaming service haven’t confirmed an official reason for the swift cancellation yet, a new report from Fandango’s John Gholson has revealed that the show’s end may be due to an accounting error on the behalf of North Carolina, where the series was shot, in which there was supposed to be a $40 million tax rebate for the production, half of the reported $80 million budget. However, due to this error, the state’s correction only amounted to around a $13 million rebate, causing Warner Bros. to shut down production on the series and re-evaluate the remainder of its first season.
Due to the high cost of delivering the quality of the first season, which has received very positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, it appears the streaming service has chosen instead to cut their losses and axe the series rather than extend a second season’s production cycle until a new deal is reached with the state or cutting the budget and delivering a lower-quality follow-up for the still up-and-coming service.
