in home audio the tone controls are on hte receiver, your AVR should have bass/treble or DSP. havent yet encountered a non-car/portable source with tone controls.

they don't. standard progressive scan (480p) only for the component video out. Pioneerr DV300, 400, 600 only upscales via HDMI.

Thanks Sir Jun_P for your reply. Now, I need your opinion...which is better among the two units, the 400 or the 600? :)

I really don't know... don't have personal extensive experience with the DV400.. I have the DV600. Better to ask those who have experience on both models  ;D

pasingit po.   :D

tanong ko lang kung ano maganda in terms of audio performance between dv600 or dv696?
nakita ko kasi sa presyo ng dalawa at mas mahal lang ng konter yung dv696.
i just wonder bakit mas mahal yung dv696 considering older model ito than dv600.

thanks.

If you want be future-proof for Divx Ultra at possible Optical connection, i think 1K price difference is worth it ;)

I had my one-week old Pioneer DV400 upgraded to DV600 just yesterday... Thanks Sir Jeff! :)

Hi Guys,

Question lang po.  I am currently using pio 400 player for my pana 42pv70.  I noticed nagskip skip yun scenes while watching the movies.  Ang gamit kong bala ay dvd9 (pirated blue ray) but when I use this to a standard dvd player ok naman sya.  Walang problema.

Is there something wrong with my player?

Mas mura ata ang Philips so i prefer taking the Philips over the Pioneer. Dvd lng naman all we need is the hdmi output of the unit. We're moving towards bluray na in a year of 2 when China starts flooding the market w/ pirated Bds eh fiesta na tyu sa Hi def and thats the perfect time to own a stand alone bluray player.

1. Will be using it for HDMI upconversion to 1080p.
2. Is there much difference in video and audio playback quality between these two players?

Audio and video qualities are the same for both players.

3. Which one is better with media/disc compatibility?

Philips is the more reliable reader.

4. Quality of build?

Pioneer has better build quality.

5. Warranty & quality of local service?

AFAIK, service is the same.

6. Any additional inputs/comments?

Pioneer should release a new design in piano black.  Their silver finish looks old.

I too was choosing between the two at one point, as I plan to get an upscaling dvd player as well. :) However, if you read the thread of the Pio 600 or the 610, there are issues with the player being able to read certain discs. :( Some of them even stop midway thru the movie. >:(

The Oppo, however, has no issues like this. ;D In fact, all I read are praises for the units upscaling capabilities. ;D If your LCD is 32" you may want to consider the Oppo 980 instead of the 981. I have read that the Oppo 980 has a USB port to view movie files, while the 981 has none. More options to view film than dvd's alone.

In my case, I plan to get the Oppo 980 very soon! ;)

I've been using using Pio 600 for almost 10 months now. It already played more than 60 dvd's and not mentioning those favorite dvd's that I've watched more than once. So far I haven't encountered any issue at all with this player.

I think you won't see much of a difference at all if you put DV600 side by side with Oppo 980 in a 32-inch tv IMO. I dont' know if DV600 is still available in the market but their latest is DV610. DV610 costs around 5k+ and Oppo 980 costs around 10k+. If your budget permits then buy Oppo but if not then go with Pio.  :)

Sir Dyerds, you are one of the lucky ones to have gotten a good unit. ;D Pio is not consistent in the quality of their players. :( I used to own a Pio dvd player before, (can't remember the model no.). Anyway, the player would sometimes stop in the middle of the film, or other times, can't read discs at all. >:( If you get a chance to read the thread on the Pio 610, you'll see that there is a member of our community who has experienced problems with the 610, and to think this is so new in the market. :-[

Yup. I already read that thread sir Stick. I also used to own a Pioneer component before which also gave me many headaches. That is why I was hesitant to buy another Pio player but because of the good review I read here I decided to buy Pio DV600. I thought to myself that if this player disappoints me too I won't buy any Pio product again. So far this player lives to my expectation reliability and pq wise.

Btw, I haven't included those boxsets I also watched using Pio.  ;D

Cheers!

i don't have an oppo, but i have a pio 600 myself. but i have seen the 3 oppos in the last shoot out, 980, 981, and 983. only the 981 disappointed the members who attended the shoot-out. but as i said on a different thread, the dv-600 although came out last in the shoot-out was performing pretty well, because the difference in the pq between those different players were really small. kaya happy naman ako sa 600 ko.

but kung may magbenta ng oppo 980 at 6-8k why not?  ;D ;D ;D

I recall the 981 wasn't calibrated during the shootout so I'll give it a benefit of a doubt that it actually is a great performer.

You said it bro. I also posted this in another thread:

Quote
Ako naman yung DV400 ko parating "No Disc" after 6 months of scarce usage.  Buti nalang naka-warranty pa and Pioneer changed the MPEG board.  After a year and 1 month, same problem occurred pero wala ng warranty. Brought it to Pioneer and they told me that they had to change the ribbon connector and ok na.  They still tested it before I got the unit and then nagloko na naman.  Sabi nila dalhin na daw sa main service center kasi MPEG board na yung sira.  Problema, wala ng warranty kaya malamang mahal na ang repair. So I just pulled out the unit.  Good thing wala silang siningil sakin.  Tested a few DVDs so far ok naman pero di nako aasang tumagal.   Mukhang lemon din ang nabili ko.

That's why I also bought the Xtreme HDMI DVD player as back-up.  ;D

I also experienced that same problem with my Pio DV490. In the middle sometimes beginning of the film it will freeze kahit ano pindutin mo sa remote ayaw gumana. You have to shut it down and turn it on again, remove the disc, put the disc back on and some how it will play normally again. Pero di naman madalas mangyari. I somehow learned to live with it. Kaya ako my next dvd player would be an OPPO.
