i don't really know if this is possible (have to research) but most surplus TVs i see, even if rechanneled, are not able to get all local channels.   Maybe, on some models, you can change the tuner.

I use my VHS tuner to get all the local channels, and use my japanese TV as a monitor utilizing its video in port.

Get a digital controller. It costs around 1K plus. Get a unit that has both RF in and out and Composite output and input. Don't get a cable converter since you won't be able to get the UHF channels.  :)

Try looking for it at any electronics store anywhere, at kahit anong brand okay lang sya. Just check the back for the connections I suggested you find so that convenient sya. I bought my Xian Jia for 1,100 at the store na nasa corner ng raon mall, it has both RF and RCA inputs and outputs, pag baba mo sa Daiichi showroom, I forgot the name of the store e, hehe.  ;D Sorry for the late reply ha?

I have a Japan surplus TV that captures only the first 40 channels of local cable service.  Will this DIGITAL CONVERTER allow us to view programming or channels beyond channel 40?  Appreciate your inputs.

I saw a Sunwin digital controller being sold in Bidshot.  It has RF input and output, as well as RCA composite input and output.  This is very similar to the Xian Jia, which arthurallanj has.  Baka bumili rin ako later.  Seller is Christian (Bidshot ID xtian_777).  His last price is still lower than his listed Buy-Now price.

FYI lang.  I also have the same problem with my Jap surplus TV, hanggang channel 35 lang...  :-[

what's the difference between a digital contoller and a cable box converter?

A cable box is only capable of tuning to cable channels, it cannot act as a rechanneling adaptor, since it cannot tune to UHF channels. A digital controller is also known as a digital channel selector since it automatically tunes in to any channel that receives a signal, whether it be cable or broadcast. ;)

Thanks paolorenzo for the info.
I bought one digital controller and Im happy about the results.
I think it also boost the cable reception kasi mas luminaw ang reception ng tv ko.

Medyo mahal lang ang binebenta sa bidshot if you guys have time try nyo sa raon.

We test it using an inside antenna and my TV was able to capture channel 2

just bumping up this topic...

i have a spare sharp vcr. can't play vhs anymore 'coz it's busted, but the tuner still works flawlessly. it can pick up all local and/or cable channels. perfect for those with jap surplus tv's.

pm if interested. thanks...
