Hi Bennedict,

Got a call  from your man Paul.  He asked about the speakers problems other than the obvious cracked cabinet....I mentioned a blown woofer as it croaks like a frog on high volume. I also asked to run a complete diagnostic.  Have you guys determined the issues with those Bose 301's.

Thanx

Kenny

Hi Benny,

Paul again told me that the only problem with my speaker was the cracked cabinet.  It was the reason for the croaking and the mexican hat dance due to the vibrations.   It appears he was correct in assessment and repair. After testing on higher volumes the Bose sound great.  Thanks for your good service.  You probably saved me a bundle.

PS....It was nice meeting you today.

Speaker Doctor, I have a subwoofer for repair!

Its an active  NEC subwoofer that I bought in 1989 during my first trip to Singapore. It is a downfiring 12 in woofer with crossover control. I used to install it together with my Mini component Aiwa back when we dont have the 2.1 channel yet. I used it about a trillion times at home full blast and naturally the Aiwa mini- compo survived while the SW conked out. So the transformer of the speaker was re-wounded several times until at one time after tumigil ulit siya this crazy technician repaired it by placing a new subwoofer with a different Ohm rating. I havent been able to fully experience again the real lows of this subwoofer (up to 25 Hz) since the speaker was replaced. So ginarahe ko muna ito for about 10 years and bought just last year a HT in a box courtesy of 5th ave. When I fixed my bodega last year also I discovered napatakan ang NEC SW ng tubig and the particle board casing on top of this elegant looking SW ay nag-expand na. The piano finish top(  can be elegantly used as a coffee table top) is still shiny, pero halos bulok na ang upper housing under this laminated top bec of the water seeping in. Can you help me in the repair of the water damage and replacing the subwoofer with the appropriate rating and brand? I feel the speaker maybe sira na rin. Just wanna make it ready for future use.
Where can I bring it and who can help me?

sakit ba talaga ng 301 ang crackling sound na yun?ganun din akin eh..worst is parang ni shotgun ang butas na nakita ko sa 301 ko..sana ma repair pa

Sir disturbed,

Hindi sakit ng 301 crackling sound.  Nadidinig lang yan pag hindi nakadikit or natanggal dikit ng cabinet o kaya pag may sira ang speaker.  Ano nabutas sa 301 mo? Yung cone?  If that's the case re-cone gagawin dyan.  Mapapalitan yan pero not the original Bose cone. If you want the orig cone you can ask the Bose country distributor to order a recone kit and if you prefer kami na magdidikit.

Thanks,

Benedict

Sir Norman,

I would advise that the cabinet repair be done by your trusted carpenter.  Field of specialization kasi namin is Speaker Surgery and not  sa cabinet, although we sometime do minor repair sa cabinet  ;D With regards to the particle board there's no other choice but to replace it with a new one copying the old specs.  Sa sub naman kung hindi pinalitan at tinapon ng technician pwedeng pwede naming i restore it to it's old glory.  I suggest that you search the net for sub with the same or have the nearest specs to your old sub driver.

Thanks,

Benedict  ;D

Speaker Doctor,

I have a Hoffman 5.1 amplifier-speaker system (I know. Shameful.  :P) No sound is coming out of the speakers. The sound konked out last weekend in the middle of watching RocknRolla. I didn't do anything unusual. The volume wasn't louder than the usual setting and I haven't changed any setting since we first started using it. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the amp/Subwoofer since all 5 speakers crackled then lost sound at the same time, while the subwoofer is still producing sound.

We've previously had it repaired for a similar problem although it was only with the front right speaker connection. I don't want to have it repaired by Hoffman since their service is terrible. We just want to get it fixed so we can sell it at residual value (if any).

Any tips or suggestions re: where I can bring these?
Oh, heck. Someone get him some tissue.

i got an old yamaha ns45 surround tower speakers. Also, just bought a cayin t50 tube amp and would like these speakers reconfigured to match the amp. Maybe you can modify the speakers and crossover to sound like those high-end expensive speakers.

sir louiesia,

Cost and result wise, it would be more practical to buy speakers that will meet your sound expectations rather than modifying your old Yamaha NS45.   First, it wasn't designed as hi-end speakers so it will not sound like one, and the result of modification(s) is not certain that it will sound like a hi-end speaker.

My two cents.

Thanks,

Benedict  :)

Dear Speaker Doctor,

If you were to repair a pair of speakers where only one of the tweeters is defective, would you suggest to have both tweeters repaired, para pantay or just the defective one?

Thanks!

Sir dnk,

I would suggest that only the defective tweeter be repaired.  Unless the voice coil is made from aluminum wire both tweeter's voice coil must be converted to copper wire to have similar sonic quality.

Thanks,

Benedict

Sir,

sent my sub to you for diagnosis. It's an OEM Polk audio. I plugged the 110V amplifier into a 220V outlet. The amp seems to be fine but the speaker popped. Lost the dust cap. I'm planning to use it for car audio. Please let me know how much it would cost to fix it and how long it would take.

Thanks.

Sir,

I would just like to thank you. Very speedy service. Nice clean job. You are right. The sub is working perfectly.

I just saved myself a few hundred pesos. I thought the coil needed rewinding. Thank you for checking it for me and finding out there's no problem with it except for the dust cap.  ;D

Very honest and good service.

Highly recommended.

Hi Benedict,

You're highly recommended by a friend whose Boston Acoustic foam surrounds you replaced. This time I'd like to know if you can work on my Smaller Advent speakers which I had bought recently with the woofer already "repaired' but I think could get your pro touch to put them back to their original state. Thanks and I'll be texting you asap for skeds.

sir d'dale,

Based on the images of your Goodmans, the cone needs to be replaced.  I don't know if the voice coils are still ok.  Anyway, it depends kung may makukuha kaming cone that will fit your Goodmans.  Please bring your speakers to our place we need to see it and canvass the materials before we can give an estimate.

Hi sir,

I've sent my JL 12" sub to you a long time ago and just would like to tell you that you did a good job fixing it :) Anyway, my morel tempo 6 right woofers are acting up. Parang may cricket sound at high volumes or when playing low frequency tracks (filtered at 100hz and above naman yung separates ko).

Possible problems:
1) Could be dirt on the voice coil rubs when bass tones play.
2) Or the voice coil got misaligned when you played it LOUD.
3) Or the pigtail could be detached from the underside of the cone, and hits the cone when bass notes play.

hi benedict,

actually i posted this topic already on the same forum....

i just bought a used JBL Digital 10 subwoofers from a friend, he's complaining about the "sound"....i pressed him about it but all i got are some very vague answers....anyway, i opened up the crossover network and saw that 2 capacitors(C6 & C24) are really fried...

JBL Singapore has given me the correct value/rating of the caps and schematics of the Xover network for the subs.....

last week, based on the info from JBL, i was able to buy the same specs of caps from sim lim tower, the equivalent of raon here......i DIY'ed it but medyo unsuccessful on my part coz when i turned on the amps it keeps on firing and making those big booming sounds continously.....i do not have the complete equipment like the tester.....i suspect there are other things that was damaged like the resistors.....i tested the woofers and lucky na rin coz they were not damaged......

do you repair the crossover network of a JBL 10 active subwoofer?

ang dami ko palang iuuwi for repairs.....the KEF woofer and dented tweeters plus i'm contemplating bringing in the Altec Lansing Model 1 woofers for a checkup....one of my restoration project kasi....

oo nga pala, based on our conversation at WS, i'm bringing in some 5.5" foam edge replacement....no charge...konting regalo na lang to you.... :)

Hello s'Benedict,

I picked up my Sony SW and satellites speakers from you last night. I got home here in Binan quite late night na but still very eager to try out my recently repaired sub. I set-up my Audio system (less the rear speakers pa muna) with Pioneer DV610S player and watched my original copy of The Matrix --- Boy!!! You did a good job, I can again hear the kaboom! - when Agent Smith gunned down Neo on the later part of the movie. I cant wait to fully set-up my system again and watch my other collections.

Thanks a lot for the good job... and thank you more for checking my satellite speakers for FREE!!!

I highly recommend Speaker Doctor!
