banana clips?
« on: Oct 09, 2002 at 11:59 PM »
why use banana clips? is it really necessary to use them. i have always just connected my wires straight to amp.

if they are really benefitial, where can i get decent but not too expensive clips?

bunkieboy,

You can get banana plugs from any audiophile store. If you want a cheaper B plugs, try True Value or Deeco. They said its a better connection but the reason I use it because its very easy to connect and remove.

some radio shack outlets carry them for P250+ a pair. its smaller and better crafted than the generic gold plated models. slightly more expensive though.

it's really very convenient especially if some of your speakers are elevated or whenever you're experimenting on different speaker placements

Sorry, bunkieboy, if I just read this thread today.  The reason why some people prefer banana plugs is because they tend to tweak/adjust/move around/reset/replace their audio systems frequently.  The bananas make it more convenient for them.  Now, if you intend to keep your set-up the way it is for a long time, then there's nothing like a direct wire to terminal connection.  Hope that helps.

Actually, imho, spade connectors (properly crimped) are the best.  They offer the most amount of contact to the binding posts.  If your setup doesn't change or move around too much then I'd recommend spade connectors.

Pros and cons:
Bananas and spades are good, for a lot of rearranging speaker placements. Soldered wire on gold tipped terminals are good to prevent oxidation of bare wire, which can lead to poor contact.
Bare wire is very good and of course cheap, until wires oxidize, in which case problems on contact will arise.

Last year I bought Ixos banana plugs at DCM in Cubao. P90 or P100 yata each. They will offer to solder them pa if you buy the cables from them. Ixos is a quality cable brand. I use Ixos component cables.
They also sell dual banana plugs unbranded. Nice, as they fit my Yamaha receiver, but not the B&W speakers.  They seem to be sturdier too.

Actually Banana clips or plugs are made just for convenience! Agree? There is no difference on sound, always remember the Law of Physics, mas lesser ang dadaanan mas maganda diba? But beware, it's more advisable to use BP's to your Receiver rather than your speaker because it's more safer! Pag-natangal and plugs mo sa speaker there is a risk na magka-dikit yong dalawa but if sa receiver mo walang risk diba?
Me, sa receiver lang ako for convenient connections during cleaning lang.

I buy quantum ( similar to AY1385 ) at Sound Dimension at Park Square for 100 each. You can also go to True Value or Ace Hardware electronics section and you can get it for 80 per pair ( AY1370 ).

help naman po sa banana plugs?
i have onkyo tx 501 that says in the manual that i can hook-up banana plugs for the speakers instead of bare wire. for ease of cleaning, i decided to purchase banana plugs (quantum) pero to my dismay ayaw pumasok sa binding posts? meron bang sizes ang banana plug? hindi ba ito standard? o sadyang mahigpit lang talaga?
here is a rear view pic of my avr for your reference....

hope you could help me on this one...ty po

Pihitin mo ang plastic nut ng amp binding post ng todo, dapat may makita kang butas, similar to your speaker's post, that would fit your plug. Kung wala, see if the plug fits the center hole of the binding post (parang idudugtong mo lang). Kung hindi pa rin kaya, find "crimp-on pins" na gold plated, which are available from Monster Cable, most likely even Quantum. Mas maliit siya at mas mura compared with solid copper-gold plated banana plugs.

Sorry, sa speaker ba kamo? In that case, use gold-plated crimp pin that fits spring-type speaker terminals, not banana plug. Papalitan mo na lang yung binili mong solid copper-gold plated banana plugs.

Parang masikip nga...  pero ganun naman talaga ang banana plugs and post... kala mo di kasya, pero naiipit din through sa center hole ng binding post din on my HK 330.  What does your manual say on banana plugs connected to the back of your AVR?  Walang picture on how to do it?

i'm using quantum banana plugs on my onkyo tx-sr600. just insert it carefully in the receiver's binding posts, the banana plugs will pop in easily just be careful don't force it hard.  oki  ;)

Anybody tried locking banana plug 90 deg. angled  with plastic cover to prevent accidental short circuit? It's availbale at Hyperaudio's place at very reasonable price (Php 150.00 each).
