Found this topic in another DVD forum and thought it's kind of interesting to bring it up here.

What are the titles in your collection that you have in different editions (Criterion, Superbit, Special Edition, Director's Cut, Infinifilm, DTS, etc.) It could also be duplicate releases only with different region coding.

I'll start: NONE! ;D

I have 2 versions of The Exorcist - Original and Extra Crispy , hehehe ;)

As the original was the first DVD I added to my collection, when "The Version You've Never Seen" was released, I decided to get it as well. Both are R3.

1. The Exorcist: 25th Anniversary Special Edition and The Exorcist: The Version You've Never Seen, both R1.

2. Eyes Wide Shut - R1 (released first) and R3 (without the digital censorship).

3. National Lampoon's Animal House - Both R1, the first one I bought was the barebones fullscreen edition, then I bought the widescreen collector's edition when it came out.

4. The Evil Dead - Both R1. I initially bought the full-screen barebones Anchor Bay release, then I couldn't resist buying the interestingly packaged new widescreen Book of the Dead edition.

5. Porky's - Both R1. I bought the original (one of Fox's first DVD titles), then had to buy the Porky's/Porky's II: The Next Day flipper when it was released. Frustrating. They already had Porky's on the market. That should have been a Porky's II/Porky's Revenge flipper they released.

6. Lethal Weapon 1-3. I resisted buying the R1 Director's Cuts, since I had already bought the original versions and all the additional scenes were on the Lethal Weapon 4 disc, anyway. But then I saw them on sale as R3 at Astro, and... the devil made me do it! ;)

7. The Scream Trilogy - I already bought the three R1 discs individually, but I couldn't resist the boxed set for the Scream 2 Special Edition and the bonus 4th disc.

8. Apocalypse Now and Apocalypse Now REDUX, both R1.

Reading the messages, I noticed you haven't discussed the duolicates that I have in DVD format

I have the MATRIX original and the MATRIX pirated.
I have GODZILA orginal and GODZILA pirated
I have THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE, also orig and pirated.

Conclusion:  Origs are superior in terms of special features and the clarity in zoom modes.  Otherwise, the video and sound quiality are the same for 10% the price.

I have the VHS and DVD of DRAGONHEART, both legal
I have the VHS and DVD of TOTAL RECALL, both legal
I have a VHS LD copy and DVD of DRAGONHEART

Conclusion:  Apart fron video quality, special features  and scene selection convenience, DVD is superior as I get more defined rear channel information vs pro-logic.

I had VCD and DVD of EMPEROR's NEW GROOVE
I had VCD and DVD of TITANIC
I had VCD and DVD of GODZILA
I had VCD and DVD of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE

all legal

Conclusion:  If you notice my possessive verb is in past tense.   That's because I practically threw out all my VCD collections.  My VHS collection is next.

Spartacus One Criterion, one R3.  I bought the R3 just a couple of weeks before I learned there was going to be a Criterion title. Aaarrgghh!

Snow White Region 1 and Region 3.

The Mummy Special Edition and Ultimate Edition.

Gladiator Region 1 and Region 3. I bought the Region 3 when my R1 became inexplicably unplayable.

in the mood for love

the first being the criterion collection (r1).  based on the interviews placed on the features disc, i got to learn that wong kar wai actually shot 3 hours worth of footage but cut it down to 90 minutes.  the timeline for the movie was to start from the 60s and end in the 80s.  he stopped the film in the 60s.  the actors mentioned in an interview that their characters actually got to meet and interact later (cut footage) and an alternate ending was shot too.

my second copy is the chinese version - special edition.  disc 1 contained the feature film. however, to my dismay, the second disc which contained four deleted scenes (as a sneak of materials cut from the 3 hour footage) did not have an english subtitle to go with it.  so with the interviews (different from criterion) placed in it. just the same, viewing the scenes really showed a different development of the characters in a later time period.  after viewing those, i thought that wong kar wai's decision to cut had some basis.  besides, a new film 2046 started out in his production of in the mood and he might use some cut scenes to branch off to that movie.  then again,  it will be totally different since he shoots his films with impromptu script. ;D

I am always in a dilemma when it comes to buying DVDs.  You buy the first release usually the Special Edition in Dolby Digital, then comes out a later release in DTS or in Superbit, then an Anniversary/Collector's Edition with tons of extra features.  Arrrgh!  Then you realize that you are buying the disc not because of the movie anymore but because of a DTS track or the special features.

Not to mention other Region DVDs with a free toy or with special features not in the R1 release.  Then you get confused on what to get.  And just to satisfy your urge, you tend to buy all versions!   Call this sic, call this mad!  Woe to those damn DVD manufacturers!
