Nostalgic but very elegant, the amber light still has it's own charms over the de facto blue.

Totally agree, that's why I built it for that nostalgic look and feel. I hope to integrate it to my amp some time soon.  :)

@kemozavi, Yes sir I think I saw some at Deeco, you can just ask Tony for the controller. Try to get something with a release time of no longer than 300ms and a DC resistance of about 3500 ohms.

I plan to use this not just for "show", but for a meaningful VU and PPM I needed an accurate way of representing and weighing of the original input signal going to my power amp. Walang kwenta yun mga ginagawa nila na nakakabit lang sa speaker yun VU meter via a dropping resistor and diode, puro yabang lang yun with no meaningful reading and what's worse puro overshoot.

My VU meter's ballistic control circuit is complete with a fullwave active signal rectifier, high speed switching control transistor and all germanium oa91 diodes for that very very low voltage drop necessary for precision metering. I used Burr-Brown for the buffer/rectifier opamps.

merong controller, yung pioneer spec2 gumamit din ng ganyan, pwede i clone yon....search mo lang sa hi-fi engine....

or order na ka lang kay jojo.... ;D

anong application mo jojo? kung sa power amp output, silicon 1N914/1N4148 is just as good..

^the meter movement is available at DEECO, there is another version, black facia, being sold at AMCO accross the street from avenida....

years ago, i used the same type of meters on my super leach power amp, it was a standard 19 inch relay rack type panel, that amp together with several others, were stolen from my shop by these bolt-cutter gang theives......that is why jojos' post brings back sad memories to me....

there was even a time in 1994 when the thief even advertised my amp at the Buy and Sell magazine, it was advertised as a "Tecson" amp imported from the states, i was even able to call the seller and talked with him about inspecting the unit prior to purchase.....i came to the place in Basila street in Mandaluyong with some policemen from pasig, but then wala na kaming inabutan......

well, such is life, i hope the thief can read this post, makunsiyensya naman sana.....mahihirapan silang ipaservice yung amps na yon....

i was not able to recover from that loss......i had to work overseas....

pasensya na napakuwento lang....

uy di ko pa nakita yan, but so far naman satisfied ako sa controller ko. I'm torn between a conventional VU meter movement and a PPM. Sobrang likot kasi ng VU eh.

sa input ng power amp ko ilalagay to monitor the input level. I would highly recommend the germanium diodes tony, ang laki ng difference sa silicon diodes, very accurate and less overshoot and movement ng meter.

brader, yun mga nabibili sa Deeco, or sa iba electronics shops (even online) puro meters lang yun. you'll still need a precision controller and dun nagkakatalo - at wala sa Deeco niyan hehehe...  ;D

I'm so sorry to hear about that incident tony, nang dahil tuloy sa VU meter project ko naalala mo pa yun.  :(

I plan kasi to use that meter on a mosfet amp prototype that I'm building for our HT/Audio setup. Parang touch of retro kasi at nostalgic diba.

Forget it na lang, mas madami pa super leach amp ang magagawa mo for sure, besides napaganda naman ang pag work mo sa overseas dahil sa dami ng tube treasures na nakita mo dun. And not to mention Russian women. Ooppss  :D

korek, log type nga ang stepping niya. nakakatuwa pagmasdan lalu na yun accuracy sa analysis ng music material.

I've calibrated approximately 1.23Vrms @1KHz as 0db and so far metering is so good.

so with this input, full power na yung amp mo?

nope, not yet. I measure approximately 2vrms with a 1Khz sine for rated power. sakto lang yun 2vrms dun sa +3 ng VU meter.

^setting the 0db point on the meter to indicate full power tells you if you are overloading your amp and by how much....

I know that and thanks for reminding, I set 0db as the rated output power and +3db for the full output power, both are still beyond clipping...
