War Movies on DVD

What war movies would you recommend? Is there any WW II movie highlighting the Eastern European theater of the war other than Enemy at the Gates (depicting the Battle of Volgograd)?

Yup, Here Come the Military Movies thread is a good read, but it discusses new and coming war/military movies. If I may suggest to our moderators that this thread be moved to the DVD Discussion Forum where we can all appropriately respond.  :)

Don't know about Eastern European war films, but the war movie I would recommend is Gettysburg.

For me, nothing captures all the different aspects of war like this one does. Horror, heroism, courage, leadership, futility, folly, and so forth, they're all here, recreated with the help of true civil war history buffs as extras.

Glory is also good. A bit more Hollywoody.

Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line got me started in my War-Themed DVD collection.

The others that followed:

Glory
Patriot
U-571
Das Boot
Full Metal Jacket

War as backdrop:

Three Kings
The English Patient
Empire of the Sun

Starwars 1: The Phantom Menace
(he he)

I didn't regret buying any of these, as a matter of fact, I want more! ;)

band of brothers was a mini series on HBO and was only limited to 10 episodes.

as for k-19 it is about the nightmare endured in 1961 by the crew of the Soviet nuclear submarine K-19, when an exposed reactor core nearly resulted in a nuclear catastrophe. Several crewmen died, and K-19's captain (played by Harrison Ford) had to assert his command when near-mutiny favored his executive officer (Liam Neeson).
saw this recently ..and i find the story to depressing and slow...my recommendation is to rent this one 1st before buying it.:)

Don't watch *Enemy at the Gates*. *Stalingrad* is better.

Well despite being not that jam packed in features...
Behind Enemy Lines boast an impressive DTS track which surely blows the hell out the action sequence it got!!

Hey Guys!

for me i want windtalkers, pearl harbor, saving Private Ryan, Thin red line to name a few. These are war movies produced just recently. I go for the recently produced war movies because of their excellent sound format. If you a have at least the receiver with a 5.1 audio, then i really recommend these movies. M using  receiver with a 7.1 audio output capability, meaning it can process ex or es encoded audio signals these signals can mostly be on dvd movies produced just recently.

Cross of Iron Sam Peckinpah's war movie starring the late, great James Coburn. The combat scenes will put Band of Brothers to shame.

Also

Attack!
The Big Red One
The Train

And of course Full Metal Jacket.

Good choice. One of the best,if not the best, war movie post-70s. Probably won't sound as good on a home theater system, though. But very heartbreaking. As opposed to Kubrick's movie, another good call, which shows how absurd and surreal and funny, blackly funny that is, war can be.

(The best way to listen to the clarity and force of gunfire and explosions and of men getting killed, I suppose, is to be right thick in the middle of a war. A real one. Taob ang DTS doon! )
