HK HD970 or HK HD755
« on: Jan 23, 2006 at 09:53 AM »
Hi,

I'm planning to buy my First CD player and these two are my choices.

    1. Harman Kardon HD755
          - P10K
          - HDCD

     2. Harman Kardon HD970 (newer Model)
          - P15K

I'll be using it to play mostly ordinary CDs
    To be used with:
          - HK AVR 130
          - Diamond 9.5

If you happen to have used, or using these CD players, I will appreciate your inputs.

You can also recommend other brands/models in this price range.

Thanks and I really appreciate your help.

Pre,

The HD970 is a good one. I beleive EISA awardee pa ito. But of course to "hear is to believe".

I've listened to it and I liked it a lot. However, iba-iba tyo ng gusto so might as well audition it.

If you are in Quezon City or somewhere near SM City, you may visit Digital Dreams in SM North Edsa Car Park.

Look for Amboy or RM and tell them you were referred by Mr. Nolan Lenon. Mayroon pa silang isang bagong staff ngayon, pero di ko pa nakikilala.

You can call them at 426-6226 or 929-6287 and ask for a demo of the HD970. They will gladly set it up, so that you can listen to it when you visit the store. They may even be able to demo it together with the matching amp, HK970.

Ang nice thing dito, you can request it to be wired to almost any of the speakers they have. I often enjoy listening to their AE Evo 1s or Evo 3s or kung availale yung AE Aelite 3 floorstander. But they have other options Like the Primus line of speakers by Infinity.

I suggest you bring your listening CDs with you when you go.

That's it.

That's right Archi also sells Harman Kardon CDPs. But last time I asked they don't have the HD970 or the HK970. Tawag ka na lang din before going. Hirap mag travel just to learn di pala available yung gears na gusto mong pakinggan.

BTW, mas marami silang line of speakers that you could listen too, like yung popular na DALI Ikon speakers.

Hello Guys,

Just want to share, I used to have Musical Fidelity DAC that was connected with my DVD and to my Rotel stereo amp. It sound good but too bright I think. Probably I'm not maximizing the setup, can be the DAC since I don't have a power supply for it only an adaptor and it can be the poor transport (DVD). In short I sold my DAC and then after listening again to my DVD and Rotel amp it was worst than ever. So I decided to look for another MF DAC but to no avail. Then I saw this CD player HD970 an award winner (EISA), I bought one now I'm back to a sonic haven with a vengeance in my opinion better than I used to have. The CD player sound soooo warm and no more ear fatigue for me. I highly recommend this CDP, I'm not a guru just want to share my experience.

scoob,

what cdp did you choose? i strongly advised that you get the 970, it has better DACs and according to some owners the sound is warm and non-fatiguing even on long-hour listening.

Hello Scoob,

This is not actually related to the subject above. I already posted this query to the audio settings section and our guru folks have provided very good inputs. It just happened that I also have an HK receiver and I am having some difficulties in attaining a stage image.  With your HK receiver and WD Diamond, were you able to attain a decent sound stage? I know that there are other factors, I just wanted to verify before doing further improvements.

Thank you and more power.

Up ko lang tong thread.

Any others who can share their listening experience with the HD970?  I am actually seriously considering this player vs the NAD 542 and CA Azur 540C version 2.

I am keen on the HD 970 since it has more features than the rest of the bunch.  the HD 970 has the following:

- mp3 playback (not sure if choices above have this)
- digital out
- digital in (others dont have this)
- HDCD
- CD text (others dont have this)

all these features point to more flexibility/options for the HD970.

I'm in the hunt for a CDP coz i'm separating my audio from HT.  Sound-wise I dont have complaints about my current audio system (Philips DVD using HK 240 DAC via coax) just need a dedicated CDP  since I'm building audio-only set-up.

TIA

Dude,
I have an HD970. Comparing it from a dvd player, ofcourse malayo. However I have not auditioned this cdp side by side with the azur and 542. Mukang pareho tayo ng path ah. More tube sounding daw ang azur but still audition mo pa din. BTW, accastil is selling his azur. Send him a PM kung interested ka ma-audition.

bro thanks for your inputs.

I have actually auditioned the Azur540C and 640C together with Marantz CD5001 side by side.  Know what, I'm a bit disappointed bcoz the sound i heard from those three cdps did not quiet measure up to my expectations.  :(

My Philips DVD connected to HK240 DAC has more details and bass slam!  I am quiet familiar with the tracks i played through the three cdps and my conclusion surprisingly was that the three options above did not better the sound of my current setup!  At best, the sound from these dedicated cdps is comparable to my current setup.

Then again, the amp and speakers used in the store were different from those that i have at home, not to mention the sonic character of my room and the store but I am sure that in the store is better since it is acoustically treated.  The store used Azur640A integrated to drive MS902i while I used wharfe pi-10 and rotel amp.

If I am not planning to separate the audio setup I will not be buying a dedicated cdp at all.

I have also heard the HD970 with HK970 integrated.  Very good extraction of details and bass.  But again, different gears from mine.

I am leaning more towards the HD970 becoz of its added features.

Sir hear_me_shout, parinig naman ng setup mo   ;D

thanks sir.  will pm you.

we're indeed on the same path and like you i have no dedicated audio setup yet.  ;D  You have a cdp, i don't.  what i have now is a power amp.

i can bring my power amp so we can compare using HD970 vs. the HK240 DAC in action.

Ok lang ba sir?  parang self-serving kasi sakin since ako ang naghahanap ng cdp.   :-[

feedback naman sa HK HD970. Kamusta audition? Could you compare with AZUR 540C V2 or Rotel RCD06?

Also looking for a cd player.  ;D
