NAD S500i CD Player

This reference CD Player from NAD is considered as their best CD Player so far. I wonder if it is in the same league as the Rotel RCD-1072...

redkoji,

how much is your local price for the S500i?

Currently the S500i is being sold directly by Studio Systems thru order basis arrangement...we cannot comment on the price but more or less its bracket is in between P50-60,000.00.

If it ain't HDCD capable, get the other model.  Even if you do not use HDCD discs,  any CD sound will benefit from the superior digital filters of HDCD players.  Just my thoughts.

Nope, it does'nt support HDCD. it is only a 20-bit upsampling. Thanks for your recommendation, i think i'll save some more mooolahs to get an HDCD player.

I use c21bee. Out of the  box, it sounds good enough. But I've made a quite a lot of modifications already on the filters, caps, rectification, and opamps (ditched NE5532 and LM6172 in favor of OPA2134) that it's really no longer nadc521bee and the result I believe a lot better. What I really think is a great value player is the 521i if HDCD is not important to you and you then tweak it to your preferred sonic character.

Garp, if you are happy with the OPA 2134, wait till you get your hands on the OPA627.

I was happy with the Rotel RA931 Mk II's OPA 2134. But curiousity got the better of me and I scored a dual OPA627AU. Music opened up and has since been a good match with my tube cd player.

Some prefer the AD825. A lot cheaper. But I have yet to try them.

My OPA 2134 is up for sale if anyone is interested. Emaail me at [email protected]

Unfortunately OPA627 is not a dual opamp so not a direct replacement as is AD825. I have replaced the opa2134 with ad826 and the result is fantastic. My experiments with opamps before yielded only moderate results but this time the change is noticeable and in a good way, which I didn't really expect following my disappointing experience with the much vaunted LM6172. Now I can fully recommend AD826 to be on the shortlist of those wishing to upgrade opamps on NAD cd players.

How does the Rotel 1070 fare against the NAD C542? The Rotel 1072 did not get good reviews.

Yes I actually have been wanting to try AD8066 and this one actually is what Lars of LC Audio prefers over the AD825. I actually have a pair at home. But AD8066 is available only in SOIC package so its not really a plug in replacement unless I get a brown dog adapter. I got the AD chips as samples while in the US. But AD's 8066, 8065, 825, 826 are available at Newark via Access Frontiers in Makati.

You are right AD8066 is SOIC Pkg. it's a Surface Mount Device and very difficult to solder. By the way,Sorry  i'm not familiar with Newark can they sell a piece which is already attached to a PDIP(Thru hole) adaptor?  Based on what I've read on the net, owner review with this tweak really happy with the result, some says they like having a new CD player. My CD player OP Amp is already socketed, if I will replace with another direct plug-in OP amp no need for soldering. Thanks for your help hope you can plug-in your AD8066 so that you can share your review.
