Let say that you lent your favorite DVD to your close and trusted friend, and then  the DVD jewel case was grabbed and bitten by his 1-year old son.

I can relate to this. A few years ago, a friend borrowed a DVD, then when he returned it, the insert (with the chapter stops index) was crumpled up and had crayon drawings all over the faces of the actors. Clearly his 3 year old got a hold of it. I felt bad, since I really don't like to lend out my DVDs in the first place, but this was one person I just couldn't say no to.

Quote
What will be your action and reaction?

ACTION: I let it pass, since there wasn't much more I could do about it.

REACTION: The next time he borrowed a disc, I took it out of the jacket and placed it in an empty CD jewel case. :)

POST SCRIPT: He FINALLY got the hint, and that was the last time he ever borrowed a disc from me.

I hope your damaged DVD case wasn't a Warner-type snapper or a special type of jacket. If it's just an Amray case, you can replace it anyway quite cheap.

REACTION: The next time he borrowed a disc, I took it out of the jacket and placed it in an empty CD jewel case. :)

you know what?

mahiya-hiya naman yang friend na yan if he returns it and all he can give you is an apology. PUHLEEZ!! is this guy REALLY your friend? coz evidently he doesn't know how precious these things are to you...

we all know accidents happen so i guess we can forgive him... but i think i'd know better how to react after i find out how HE'd deal with it first.

the least he could do is offer to replace it or offer to pay for it... (unless OOP na yung title, which completely complicates things!!! haaayy!)

as for me... that's a lesson... lend the disc, not the case.

Yes.

Kakahiram lang sa akin ng barkada ko ng LOTR, Fast and the Furious and Moulin Rouge. Lagi ko kasing kinukulit na bumuli na ng DVD player, eh ngayon nakabili na siya kaya pinahiram ko muna.

I've been lending and borrowing discs with my officemates and family members. No problem SO FAR. We all know these things are not cheap and probably they know my temper as well.

Yes, I'm ok with lending out my DVD's. No issues. Unless I've had prior experience with that friend ruining whatever I let them borrow, that's when I tell them point blank, "No".

Speaking of which... Utoy if you're reading this, *COUGH*Ghost in the Shell*COUGH*

I treasure all my entertainment material (books, CDs, DVDs, etc.) because of their actual content and not their physical condition or material value. And I feel really glad when other people get to appreciate them too. I can only read/listen/watch them so many times. So I don't mind some nicks here, some scratches there (and in the case of books, I even endorse a good battering), especially when the person who borrowed from me was able to really enjoy what I lent them.

Years from now, and when I pass on from this life, they're all mostly going to either rot, get lost, or become obsolete anyway so I might as well spread the wealth (and the pleasure) around while I still can and while they can still provide it.

Grabe and bait mo naman Jude ;D  Siguro iba-iba lang talaga ang pag-value natin sa gamit natin, well if you treat your DVDs or Books as a collection Im sure you'll think differently, besides to some of us who have to save for as long as 1-3 months to buy those precious DVDs masakit pag nagkagasgas yung cover or yung disk mismo.  Just like books, nakakaasar naman diba pag tangal-tangal na yung pages pag-balik nangyari na sa akin yun may humiram nung Marvel Book of the Dead ko when I was still in high school pag balik parang kamuka na ni Linda Blair kaka-asar!  Ang kakainis pa friend lang ng brother ko.  >:(

Well, if the borrower totally trashes the stuff I lent, iba na yun no! Magtataray na siguro ako, and maybe ask him/her to pay for the damage in some way. Pero scratches lang, minor damage, fine with me. Actually, ngayon ko lang na-re-realize na I really like stuff to look used so siguro my preference doesn't apply to the majority. Like when I get a new book or CD I sometimes even toss or scratch it around a bit so it looks "appreciated". Parang jeans. Take note: I don't do this to stuff I borrow from other people.

Once lend my Harry Potter DVD to an officemate, told her numerous times to be careful with my DVD, that it's one of my collection, and it is VALUABLE for me.

But when she returned it, the disc had scratches, and FINGERPRINTS  >:( >:( >:(

What the hell did she do to my disc??? I was so pissed that I swore NEVER to lend ANYTHING to ANYONE EVER

Now she's eyeing my upcoming Lord of the Rings Extended Cut DVD, she said she wants to borrow it when it arrives from Canada. I just said "Sige, OK lang", but hell will freeze first before she gets her hand on that DVD, after what she did to my Harry Potter

I just hate it when people don't value your things the way you do.

I would lend my DVD IF and only IF that friend is a DVD collector too :)

I've been burned once and i don't want to act stupid by lending to a person who does not know how to take care of dvds inspite of all the please take care of this dvd coz i treasure it so much and i really take good care of my things parinig sa kanya.

How do you say 'NO' to people who borrow your DVDs?
« Reply #108 on: Nov 04, 2003 at 06:09 PM »

what do you say people?

We all have our own reasons why we collect DVDs but I guess the main point we can all agree on is that we would all like our collections to remain in near mint or pristine condition as long as possible.

Would I be willing to lend my DVDs to others?
a) YES - to certified DVD enthusiasts or very close friends/relatives to avoid any misunderstandings.  ;)

b) NO - to all the others who are not qualified. A simple "sorry but this is part of my collection" would suffice.  ;D

I do lend out most of my DVDs because most of them are inexpensive, not really those rare editions DVD.  I lend them out because I like to turn my friends into DVD aficionados so that I could also borrow from them titles that I would not certainly buy.  It is also one way of sharing my favorite movies and discuss with them their opinions with regards to the movie.
