When I bought mine, I was surprised that the firmware is already upgraded to the latest version.  Anyway, here's the upgrade instruction form Philips website.  I think you have to download the file, burn it to disc and play it on the dvd player.
http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=PH&slg=ENG&cat=DVD_HOME_THEATER_CA_PH_CONSUMER&sct=DVD_PLAYERS_SU_PH_CONSUMER&grp=HOME_ENTERTAINMENT_GR_PH_CONSUMER&session=20070516095823_122.3.103.250&ctn=DVP5965K/98&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software

tagal na nitong post...
hopefully, sir wcvmorasa is still reading the thread
& could share to us step by step procedure on how
he was able to upgrade his player!

I haven't got the chance to compare it with the Pioneer, but I am very satisfied with the audio output of the philips

still having second thoughts about this player or the 696.. anybody here can comment on the audio output of this player? they say the 696 is good coz of the burr brown chip.

Been a lurker here but thanks to all the informative threads, I did a lot of backreading (whew! dami!) and decided to buy this model yesterday.

All in all, no surprises po because of all the feedback.

PQ wise, I cannot tell the diff between 480p on my old Pioneer progressive DVD player connected via component and this one connected via HDMI (using a Sharp Aquos 32" PX5M).

Firmware is the latest (same as prior feedback) and I can get my old 20GB laptop hard drive (in a USB enclosure) to load via USB so I cannot really complain.

Thanks, will try :)  Just that most of the ones I've seen on the net don't work cuz I think they've changed it up for the newly released players.

Just an update.

After a couple of weeks of satisfactory performance. I noticed that some of the discs I played recently are having problems (screen freeze).

It's after a week of this I noticed (to my horror) that the unit scratches the discs I played.

DVD Movies with shorter lengths were ok, but epics (discs that had loads more content) were ruined because apparently the last chapters reside on the part of the disc that was scratched by the player.

I think I broke around 4 R1 and 4 R3 DVDs which of course didn't sit too well with me as I have had these since I started buying originals back in 2000.

I hope they fix it because the unit is less than 2 weeks old. I will probably not risk playing any more pricey original DVDs until I can assure myself that the unit doesn't cause any more damage.

Too bad though because when it was working, it was quite good too.

that's one of my concerns also.  Since it's slot loading and doesn't have a tray, dirt that gets trapped on the slot may scratch the disc when you insert the disc.  I don't have problem with damaged disc yet, but I take extra care that the slot is covered and is clean prior to inserting the disc.  Other than that, the player is great.  Firmware upgrade addressed the dts output problem.  Haven't got any problem with my player yet.

Don't have any scratch problems and so far no complains.
I bought my unit last month at Alabang Town Center.
Hooked it w/ my plasma 42PF9531...480p pa lang..solved ka na.
Lahat ng movies na i-replay ko looks like "live" studio feed or
"live" shooting.  Parang nagiging "Saturday Night Live" lahat ng
movies na panoorin ko.  Must be the combo between this player and
the plasma.   Using a Harman Kardon Receiver....DTS compatible
ang player na ito..or at least yung nakuha kong unit.

Enjoy!!!

somewhat similar with my setup...
same player, same AVR..
bought @ ATC too !!!  ;D
except, my display is only 32inch LCD Phillips...

no scratch poblem with my unit too... (so far...)

but still thinking of upgrading my dvd player to the 86's...
because of the Tray feature (para maka-feed ng small DVD disk)...

Update lang po...

After a week at Philips, they sentenced that my unit is defective.

Since wala ng 5965k model daw, I opted to take the 5986k (the newer one with 1080p upscaling) but I had to return the defective unit complete including the HDMI cable so in the end I still spent money to get a HDMI cable with the newer 5986k. Oh well.. that's life I guess.

I just wanna post my experience with this player and all i can say is that it's like a computer wherein you can update its firmware and not only that but you can also change the fonts and it's background of its subtitle. And for the price of 4,189.00 you can't go wrong. Thanks!

Anyone else having problems with their Philips player.  My 6-month old 5965K is acting up lately.  When I put in a disc (original, not pirated), it won't read and it would auto eject.  I sent it to Philips service center and they replaced the cable inside.  After getting home, I connected it to my HT and inserted a disc again.  To my disappointment, it exhibited the same auto eject problem.  I sent it back again the the service center.  They said that they blew "hot air" inside the unit, and that it's now fixed.  I tried it again and for a few days, it seems that the problem has been solved.  But lately, the problem has been recurring but it is intermittent...sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  I'm just waiting for it to consistently exhibit the problem before I bring it back to the service center.  Anyone having this "auto-eject problem"?  Will it be reasonable for me to demand a replacement unit since my unit has been in and out of the service center and they can't seem to solve the problem?

sir R1DVD ask ko lang kung san mo nabili yung unit mo kasi kung sa sm appliance yan you can ask for the replacement once hindi ka masatisfy sa unit mo. You can either request for a new model add ka na lang ng cash or request for the same unit. bigla tuloy akong nag worried sa unit ko since kakukuha ko lang nito last week. hopefully walang maging problem sa unit ko. Goodluck bro!

knat28, I got it from SM Appliance (SM Southmall), pero I brought it directly to AVS (authorized service center of Philips) kasi the first time I had that problem, I brought it to SM appliance and they said it will take a week daw before they can bring it to the service center.  They told me that I can bring it directly to AVS which is right across SM Southmall.  Once the problem becomes persistent (right now it's intermittent), I'll bring it back to SM.  Thanks for the tip.  Pwede kaya magchange ng brand na lang.  It's my first time actually to get a Philips item, and with this problem on a relatively new and seldom used item, parang nawalan ako ng tiwala sa Philips.

Kung talagang lumabas na ang problem nya i think you can ask for a replacement of your item and exchange it with their higher model add ka na lang ng cash pero kung wala silang makitang problem with the unit i'm sure mahirapan kang makapag requests ng replacement or exchange ng unit especially kung matagal na rin sayo ang unit. kasi ang alam ko is within 6 mos. kung may na experience kang problem with the unit you can requests for a replacement. Galingan mo na lang makipag usap sa manager ng sm appliances kasi sila talaga ang nagdedecide if they will requests for a replacement due to unsatisfied customer. try mo lang bro! Goodluck!
