Are these features (present on the 709) enough to choose a 709 over a 609?

110w vs 100w power
certified 4ohms performance
Bi-amp capability for front
Pure mode processing
Phono input
HDMI I/O 8/1 vs 6/1
RS-232
IR Input
12V trigger
Learning remote
Activity Based remote
Auto Speaker Calibration W/Mic.       Audyssey MultEQ XT (709) vs Audyssey 2EQ (609)

If you have the budget, for me yes. The certified 4 ohm performance and Audyssey MultEQ XT is worth it.

Menu
 7. Harware Setup
   - HDMI
     - HDMI Control - Set to Yes
     - Power Control - Yes
     - TV Control - Yes

Now when you turn the receiver off, the yellow "HDMI Thru" light should be illuminated instead of the red - power off indicator. Warning though, when I did this before, the amp would become warm when in HDMI Passthru mode.

it worked!!!!  thank you very much sir!!!!

used to own one but sold it after 8 months only because i replaced it with a different model.

it should have been more than two years and the friend i sold it too has not complained about any issues.

Good day!

I have a noobie question:

What settings do you guys use when watching movies?

I noticed that when I watch movies via my Xtreamer, connected to the Onkyo 509, the sound of the dialogue is a bit nasal and it is very tiring to my ears. I use the DTS/5.1 setting on the Xtreamer. And DTS on the receiver.
When I switched to XBMC using a laptop with HDMI, the sound opened up a bit. But I noticed that the DTS option is gone, instead, I am to choose between Direct and Multichannel. Either of the two produces better sound compared to the DTS setting.

I use a pair of A3's for LR and an A6 for the center.
Thanks in advance!

Does the Xtreamer have a "pass through" option instead of choosing DTS?

Chief,

According to the makers:
Quote
"The HDMI has been configured to the 1.3a spec, allowing full support of HD Audio pass-through for DTS HD-HR, DTS HD-MA, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD and DTS Downmix."

I set it to the DTS/Dolby D 5.1CH Setting on the Xtreamer and Used Direct on the AVR. Seems to sound better. More open sound than setting it to DTS on the AVR.
Is this the pass-through method?

I'm not sure because I don't have an Xtreamer but in my Blu-ray player and Mede8er there is a "pass-through" setting meaning the player just "passes" on the signal untouched to the receiver which will do the decoding instead of the player. When you choose DTS on the Xtreamer then that is not pass-through, you are asking the player to decode DTS. Again I'm just guessing since I don't have any experience with Xtreamer players.

I just understood how the settings work. The AV Setup->HDMI Audio On enables the "passthrough". The DTS/Dolby D 5.1 CH setting is for using an Optical Connection.

Now that I have it right, Do I turn on "DTS" Listening Mode, or just use "Direct" Mode?

Super thanks for the patience.

Use Direct as long as the output is in 5 channels. And I think Onkyo 709 is better than the Denon 1912. The 1912's counterpart is Onkyo 609.

A thousand thank you's Sir Conan!

Now have things setup right.
I thought I messed up my connections or I had to buy another NMT!!!

Last question, if I may...

Is it normal to have the delay for the audio to start up?

When listening to music? Millisecond delay when music starts playing?

Same question as Courage. If the answer is yes, this is normal for a digital connection hooked up to a receiver. Use the analogue outputs instead for listening to CD's and there will be no delay.

Yes.. That's what happens..

My workaround.. "Pause" The movie or music then play.. minimizes the startup delay..
Hehehe..

Thanks again for your valuable advice from experience!

Still earning mine.. slowly buy surely...

One more observation:

When I used the Audyssey setup, my Level Cal is at -12dB for the speakers... Is that right?

Update:

I changed my Media Player already.
Xtreamer, Mk1, has no HD Audio Passthrough, only the Xtreamer Sidewinder and Pro has it.

Got a cheap bang for the buck Kaiboer 130i.
Loving it. Clear and Crisp PQ and it has HD Audio Passthrough.

You have to re-do the audyssey auto set-up & make sure none of the trim levels are at -12 or +12 dB (–15 to +12 dB for the Sub). Here's the thread for audyssey set-up from AVS forum for your guidance.

I read the guide on the AVS forum and it said that the subs trim shouldn't hit -15db which is it's max.
So I redid my Audyssey setup.
I tweaked it till the Subs trim went up to -7db.
The other channels stayed the same at -12db, so I just adjusted them manually to -8db each.
Why? I don't know why!!!
Hahahaha..

Anyone who could give me insight on what I did, if it is wrong or should I make any more adjustments?
It sounds good though. Way better than when it was all at their maximum trims, -12 and -15 respectively for the other channels and the sub.

There must be something wrong with the way you run the auto set-up. I also get undesirable values like distance, trim levels, speaker size pero pinagtiyagaan ko binasa mga tips from this forum at sa labas. I'm now experiencing the "magic" of Audyssey auto set-up. Para sa akin, Anlayo ng difference ng auto calibrated kesa sa manual tweaking.
