Re: ONKYO AVR
« Reply #3600 on: Aug 13, 2013 at 06:26 AM »
Guys, encountered a problem yesterday with my 515.

I was watching Oblivion off a usb drive connected to my bluray player yesterday when I noticed that no sound was coming from the rear surround speakers. I quickly checked the details of the movie file and it says it has 5.1 channels DTS. Then I pressed the movie mode of the Onkyo but lo and behold! screen says not available??

I was puzzled why this is happening. I also noticed that the Audyssey light on the onkyo's screen is missing. I tested with other movie file, and even a bluray disk of DKR but still no sound from surrounds.

Then I turned on my apple TV and played music via AirPlay and I instantly heard the sound from the rears. This worried me even further.

I tried going into the Onkyo's setup but somehow the second option (speaker configuration) is grayed out and inaccesible. So I resorted to going online to find the answer but to no avail. I even unplugged and plugged back the two banana plugs of my rears connected to the Onkyo but still nothing changed.

I ended up resetting my AVR then going again through the painful process of setting it up ala just-opened-from-the-box. I ran the full Audyssey setup and have to withstand the loud spikes it produced while calibrating the speakers/room with the provided mic. (I hope my neighbor didn't complain as it was already 11:30PM)

I'm not running the latest FW (just the second to latest) as I don't see a reason to upgrade because the problems stated online needing FW upgrade isn't and haven't happend to mine so.

Anybody experienced this problem? It would be helpful if any member here could attest to my story.
In the meantime, i'm reading the 19+ pages of thread of Onkyo problems in AVS forum to be better informed if such incident will happen again.

did the 515 work fine again after the reset? if yes, observe if the problem persists, i suggest increasing the frequency of use to see if the issue will come back. if that doesn't fix it, try a firmware update.

if problem persists even after reset and firmware update, consider having it checked at the service center.

Tip:
to minimize potential inconvenience to neighbors during audyssey calibration, try (1) using thick and heavy curtains for the windows in the listening room and (2) closing all doors and windows in the listening room, and if possible, to all adjacent rooms as well.

you can use ear plugs as well to protect your ears from those calibration sounds (not having ear plugs, i  use an IEM type earphone which i find to be quite effective)

i do my monthly system calibration at 2AM, the quietest time of the day at our place, and my neighbors have yet to complain. or maybe we just have nice, non-confrontational neighbors, i dunno :D

Yes, it did worked fine and normal after the reset and calibration. Haven't had any issues since.
Yeah, I'm gonna watch out for any other signs of the previous issue for sure.

As for the calibration sounds, i'm fine with it but my neighbors are really the kupal type, especially the one directly below us, as he's the one hearing the house shake when the base freq are produced.

I keep the room pretty sealed whenever I watch movies, and i'd say our curtains are fine. Maybe it's just that nobody can really defeat low freq sound except to overhaul the room and make it soundproof.

Guys, planning to replace my Onkyo 818 to the higher Onkyo 1010. Is this worth the switch?

You'll not get so much upgrade with the 1010 coming from 818. I suggest looking into 3010 instead... ;)

Almost same lang specs nila.  Better go 3010 if you have the extra money.  It will depend din what speakers you will use this for.

+1... thats the reason why didn't bring in the 1010. Not worth the extra cost because its pretty much an 818 with an additional 5wpc :)

If you're interested in the 3010 i can get you one that's relatively cheap.

Ah okay, thanks for the infos. But what features does 3010 has compared to 1010 or the 818 that makes it worth the price jump (mind you its a big price jump)?  I also read somewhere that the new 828 is a downgrade from the 818. How bout the 929. Is it available here already?

almost same lang rin ang 1010 sa 3010 except for the # of channels and power supply.

# of channels:  7.2 vs 9.2 (if you're planning a 9.1 or 9.2 system in the future, better go 3010)

3010 has independent power supply in the form of 4 transformers (a massive main transformer, additional transformers for audio and video processing, and separated pre-amp and power amp blocks)

You can see here the comparison of specs.  Just click on the specific receivers and click compare:

Pretty much the biggest difference would be the independent power supply. This should provide the 3010 with a cleaner sound and more consistent power.

Hi sherwin,
I think the 515 could handle the small floor stander but I would recommend getting something with more power.  However if you plan to use A3s lang the 515 would be enough.

good day, just need a help to decide. for now im using an entry level avr which im satisfied with its performance but time comes that my ears are really searching for more and as my first upgrade, is it worth to buy a pre-owned onkyo 806 assuming that it is in a good condition? im just worried to experience the HDMI issues and hope not. please advice. thanks

Amazon's "Deal of the Day" . . .

Onkyo TX-NR818 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver (Black)

US$ 649.00 only (approx. P29K)

definitely cheaper from local seller, but is it worth the risks ... shipping, warranty not honored locally, etc.

do not forget to add the sales tax + kabayan freight charge on the total cost.

for me it is still worth even without warranty. got mine from last year's black friday sale for 32k landed cost. mura kasi ang conversion ng dollar to peso before.

of course, 110% working at wala naman problema. i have brought in 3 receivers so far and all are working good. you would not worry during shipping as they are placed in a manufacturer's approved shipping box. ganon din naman pag ship from the factory thru container parin by boat from china to the US. the best deal i got on last year's black friday sale was the Onkyo 809 for my bro which was only $509 before tax.

plan to upgrade to a new receiver ... any suggestions on a onkyo receiver assuming my Ht room is just 16sq meter and current speakers are Warf 9.1 series, DFS, & CS.  --- 5.1 setup?
