Sounds like the ISF calibration will require the services of an ISF-certified technician. Baka may secret code to access the calibration controls. Once you get into the controls, it seems like you can adjust gray scale, gamma, color space, etc. for individual sources, just like an advanced video processor.

The problem is that I am aware of only one person in the Philippines who is ISF-certified. John from AV Driver - and I don't think they offer Onkyos. They distribute Denons.

Also, even if you can find the codes to unlock the ISF calibration, you will need special equipment (colorimeter) and software to do the calibration.

In other words, I doubt if this feature will be useful for most people in the Philippines.

Can't Alvin do this?

Who knows someone might leak the code in the net.  :)

I know someone with a colorimeter.

Pwde ba banana plug sa onkyo 606?  sinubukan ko kasi sakin ayaw e, pnilit ko ipasok pero sobrang sikip parang masisira yun terminals.

Pwedeng pwede bro! Just take out the black plastic thing from the plastic terminals with a small screwdriver and you can plug in the banana plugs! Hope this helps. ;-)

You can't output DTS-MA and Dolby TruHD through the PS3. The PS3 internally decodes these and sends them as PCM to the receiver. The receiver receives these as PCM "Multi-channel" inputs.

If the player can send the audio via bitstream to the receiver and the receiver is capable of decoding hi-def audio, that's the only time you will see "DTS-MA" & "Dolby TruHD" sa receiver mo. Your receiver is capable but the player is not.

Bottom-line: It doesn't matter if the decoding is done by the player or the receiver.

apologies mark, i may have asked the wrong questions...or i may not have gotten it right...

if i would want DTS-MA and Dolby True HD sound (of course BD menu dependent),
given a gear config of 805 + PS3 (US versions),
what should my settings be for my 805?   PS3?

with your answer, do you mean given my present gear config, i won't be able to experience DTS-MA & True HD?  OR,
i still will but i will not be able to display "DTS-MA & True HD" on my 805?

pardon my ignorance, new to this.

this one is correct sir, but your 805 will display "multichannel", but its outputting tru hd or hd-ma your ps3 decoded but in linear pcm form, so its still lossless.

pardon my ignorance, new to this.

Your AVR will only display DTS-MA or TRUE HD if you bitstream RAW data from your player and let your AVR decode the hi-def audio formats..

Pagkakaalam ko Jake hindi capable ang PS3 of bitstreaming hi-def RAW audio to the receiver unlike Panasonic BD30 or BD50.  It can however decode hi-def audio by itself and pass it through the AVR.  Pag pass through lang sa AVR, then it won't display DTS-MA or TRUE HD sa AVR mo but multi PCM yata but then you will still get Hi-def audio in your speakers..

Why don’t I see True HD and DTS HD MA light up on my receiver when I play Blu Ray and HD DVD movies?

If you own a some older series HD players, for example Blu Ray players (Ex. Playstation 3, Samsung 1200) / HD DVD player Toshiba A2, A20); those players are NOT designed to output in lossless bitstream (Hard to think those are outdated technology already but for this kind of usage they are!). If you own one of these players its decoding these HD audio formats internally (instead of sending the signal to the receiver to decode). When using these older players you should set your player to output in PCM. It will send this PCM data "predecoded" to your receiver and your receiver doesn't have to do anything but play it. Therefore, your receiver will not show True HD or DTS HD MA light up (because it’s already been predecoded inside your player already) You ARE still getting True HD/DTS HD MA even though your player decodes it you just are not having to use your receiver to do the decoding.

Only players like the ones outlined below in, send out lossless bitstream of "both" True HD and DTS HD MA to allow your receiver to decode it. Yes, if you own those players, you will see True HD/DTS HD MA display on the front of your receiver. These players allow your receiver to decode when your set them to bitstream output.

Players that support lossless bitstream of both True HD and DTS HD MA formats:
LG BH200 [Blu Ray & HD DVD] True HD/DTS HD MA with latest firmware update
Samsung BD-UP5000 [Blu Ray & HD DVD] Lossless Bistreaming of True HD/DTS HD MA with latest firmware update (1.3 or later)
Samsung BDP-1400 [Blu Ray]
*New*Samsung BD-P1500 [Blu Ray]
Panasonic DMP-BD30 [Blu Ray]
*New* Philips BDP7200 [Blu Ray]
*New* Denon DVD-3800BDCI [Blu Ray]
*New* Denon DVD-2500BTCI [Blu Ray]
Pioneer Elite BDP-95FD [Blu Ray]
Toshiba A35 [HD DVD]
Toshiba XA2 [HD DVD] (Only if you have firmware v2.7 or higher)
Onkyo DV-HD805 [HD DVD]

thanks so much doc jun!

wonder now how sony ps3 can do this in the future...and if firmware upgrades can handle it.  don't understand why sony didn't consider the output of such in the first place.

As I mentioned, it doesn't matter.

To get hi-def audio, there are 2 possibilities:

1. The player sends the audio file to the AVR via bitstream and the AVR decodes it. Doon lalabas ang "Dolby TruHD" or "DTS-MA." For this, you need a player which can send the bitstream (like Panasonic BD-30) and an AVR which can decode (such as the 805).

2. The player decodes the audio and sends it to the AVR as LPCM or "Multi-channel In." For this, you need a player which can decode the hi-def audio (such as PS3 or Panasonic BD-50).

Both methods result in exactly the same thing. You get the hi-def audio.

Yes, it does. The problem is if your input is analog. In that case, Audyssey processing is not used.

what if i have a player that decodes truhd and an AVR that cant decode truhd, do i  still get hi-def audio?

as sir streetsmart said as long as your avr has hdmi, then the player will decode it send it to the avr as lpcm, the only difference is, what you will see on your avr's display is "multichannel" instead of "dobly hd" or"dts-ma", but its still hidef audio.

but if your avr has no hdmi, then i think it won't even if you have a player that can decode, because you will only use the coax or optical outs to output classic dd and dts signals.

1080p --- pass-through only
1080i --- from component video to hdmi

had this same confusion before

if u want u can buy a player or monitor with upconversion up to 1080p

as far as the 606 is concerned it can only upconvert component video up to 1080i by using hdmi output

hope this helps

isteb,

the 606 don't have the capability to convert any video signals to 1080p.  Although it can pass-through 1080p resolution from other sources.

also, the 606 can upconvert component video signals to hdmi, but up to 1080i only

Sir, what do you mean by "na-awa" - is it overheating? I'm trying to decide on getting either the 606 or 705, medyo malaki rin kasi yung mga speakers ko - i'll get the 705 kung hirap yung 606 .... can't wait for the 706, na-compromise ko na kasi to sell my 601 from one of the forum members.
