Since a trailer first showed up on January's Funny Factory DVDs, people have been wondering, "Why is Dumbo receiving a new Special Edition?", "Will it be worth it to upgrade?", and so on. As posted earlier, Disney is expected to issue a full press release for this June 6th release (now being dubbed "Big Top Edition") soon, but we've managed to scrounge up some details on this single-disc re-release. While as usual there is a large open-ended "And More!", preliminary specs suggest the primary attraction may be a "New Digital Transfer." Beyond that, not much sounds new and what does isn't especially exciting. Slipcover packaging, "learning cards" for a matching game, a music video for Jim Brickman and Kassie DePaiva's "Baby Mine", and DisneyPedia: "My First Circus" are all additions. The remaining extras being touted -- the featurette "Celebrating Dumbo", a "Dumbo's Big Discovery" DVD Storybook, Sing-Along Songs, and the shorts "Elmer Elephant" and "The Flying Mouse" -- all appeared on the 60th Anniversary Edition DVD, released in October 2001. That first disc also offered a John Canemaker audio commentary, Walt Disney's TV introduction, two trailers, a sound design excerpt, an art gallery, a look at the apparently-abandoned Dumbo II, and a Michael Crawford music video of "Baby Mine." It's unclear if any of the remaining bonuses will be ported over, but hopefully the forthcoming announcement should clarify. Even if it does, this may be one to await a picture quality review on before being deemed an improvement.
