DVD wannabes?
« on: Nov 24, 2001 at 12:10 PM »
Have any of you guys noticed the appearance of DVD-like CDs on record bars nowadays?  Those CDs/VCD in DVD keep cases.

First, it was the A1 (boyband) album-karaoke.  Now its the special edition of Martin's latest album. This was discussed in the chat before and I won't be surprised if somebody buys these items thinking that these are bargain DVDs.  Yes, there are stickers/markings on the labels stating what they actually are but they are quite easy to miss to an uninitiated DVD buyer.

Is this also a practice by record companies abroad?  Shouldn't there be a distiction in the packaging between these audio/video formats?  I'm assuming that even DVD-Video and DVD-Audio are distinguishable by their casings.

If they wanted to look cool, why not make a custom-made case and stop borrowing cases from other formats?

Just ranting here >:(  I'll calm down now ;D

As far as I know. DVD-audio has a different casing as DVD-video. I saw a lot of DVD-audio with the same casing as audio CD has. And haven't seen DVD -audio on regular DVD-video keep case.
The only CD with a DVD-like case in the US are those being distributed by America On line. Kaya marami na akong naipon na DVD case eh. :)

Even computer games here and in Europe are being sold in keep cases. I almost got reeled in thinking they were DVD versions.

PS2 games are in keep cases (all?)

but i've seen here (in our place) copied PC games put in DVD cases (DVD case i think costs 25.. here??).
Siguro ginawa nila yun para ma-iba ang packaging???

yeah!  I remember I saw these in the Toy Section of SM Makati.  Feeling cool sila...coolang sa pansin ;D

I have to commend Disney though for the neat-looking, round aluminum case of "The Emperor's New Groove" VCD.  That one's no wannabe ;)

Yup, I saw those Disney CDs in keep casing. On the other hand, some anime dvd come in standard CD cases. When I was in Japan I saw a lot of Anime DVDs on standard CD cases. I thought they were VCDs but they were clearly marked DVDs.

I don't know but at least we get to practice scrutinizing before we start buying anything.

DVD Casing Only!
Brother Bart,

What more yung disc itself! Kaya nga yung iba ay mas preferred ay Region 1. ??? ::)

Any comments and suggestions are welcome!

I think I saw this too sa M1, vax.  Just didn't know that the girl on the cover was the voice behind that double-meaning song.

I won't be surprise if Yoyoy Villame or Porkchop (I have nothing against them :)) gets thier CDs in DVD cases in the future as well ;D

Well DVD Standard size Case seems to be the current trend for disc cases.

Take note for example releases of disc from video game consoles like PS2,Xbox and gamecube as their disc case are the same sie as DVD case.

I noticed it too, its really annoying because in a way its misrepresenting a product.  I have a number of times went out of my way to check those VCDs and CDs in DVD casing or keepcases thinking they where DVD only to find out VCDs pala or CDs.

Isn't there a regulation regarding packaging?  >:(

None :( :( :( >:( :( :( :'(

You just have to be careful and check for the DVD logo to be sure. (Di ba yung mga orig na PS discs nasa amaray-like cases din?)

It seems that even "Steelbooks" are now a trend for Videogames.

when I was in Kota Kinabalu last April, I chanced by a video store in a department store, and of course, checked out for some DVDs.  "Wow, mura to!!" I said.  Upon further inspection, vcd pala.  pero ganda ng packaging, i was almost fooled.. :) :)
