If your display has a native resolution of 720p, it will, via component or HDMI, upscale your 480i input to the display's native resolution, or downscale to that resolution a 1080i input from an upscaling DVD, Blu Ray or HD DVD player. So the upscaling DVD player outputing 1080i is essentially rendered useless for monitors with less than 1080p native resolution. What's worst, if you use component connection whch is analog, the upscaled 1080i analog output will be converted back to digital in the display before downscaling to its native resolution, and you could have more video signal losses as a result. The best is to go digital using HDMI or DVI from your player to your LCD display. Or just let the display do the upscaling from a 480i input via component. The least number of manipulation to your video signal (upscaling then DAC in the player, then ADC and downscaling in the display) the better for your video signal.
