1080p Projector w/ 20,000 hrs lamp life!
« on: Sep 02, 2008 at 02:18 PM »
Conscious of your PJ's 2-3k hrs lamp life?

HD LED PJ's are incoming!

Delta launches the first Full HD LED-based DLP Projector

Delta Electronics, Inc., a long-time industry leader in DLP® optics, light engine and projector development for a wide variety of applications, today announced it has completed the development of a groundbreaking full HD LED projector for the consumer market. With Delta's high throughput LED optics, 1080P resolution, plus wide color gamut, this projector provides a high image quality unmatched by any other lamp projector. It gives the viewer a completely new home theater experience with the bonus that the user is free from lamp replacement, as the life of the LED module is estimated at over 20,000 hours of normal operation.

With its experience and close partnership with Texas Instruments, Luminus Devices and other key suppliers, Delta has a unique early advantage in recognizing the feasibility of PhlatLight® LED and the value of LED projectors, and has commercialized this product for customers. Delta is supporting customer demonstrations of the projector at IFA 2008, Berlin, Germany, between August 29th and September 3rd, and CEDIA, Denver, Colorado, USA.

"The viewing experience is amazing. The image quality of the projector's full HD resolution plus saturated color and dynamic contrast is extremely impressive. With this product, we believe the era of the LED projector has arrived. Home theater projectors are just the beginning," said Jeff Fu, Director for Projection Display at Delta's Display Solutions Business Unit.

"The LED illumination system replaces the lamp, the color wheel and the shutter of a traditional projector. What is crucial is the need for a precise and complex control algorithm that allows the LED to work with the DMD to get high image quality. We have achieved groundbreaking improvements recently that enable us to bring this product to market. This LED projector is not only a new product; it truly opens a new horizon for the projector industry," said Fu.

Delta has developed LED projection technologies for years. LEDs provide end users with benefits that are not available from a lamp system. Superior color, long operational life, free of mercury and UV/IR are among the outstanding benefits an LED projector delivers to consumers. With the advantages of operational reliability and convenience, LED projectors will soon evolve from commercial products to consumer and home use.

Correct! Until the technology becomes cheaper, it may still be more economical to buy a replacement lamp.  :D

Nevertheless, when this technology becomes mainstream, it would be a blessing to those who like watching those long DVD special features after the movie.

I for one, am conscious of the lamp life hours when I watch special features, some last 45 mins or more!

But it took me 3 years of DVD watching to reach 1000 hrs lamp usage. So, as long as you dont use your PJ for prolonged TV watching then I suppose the current 2-3k lamp life is just ok.

If you watch a movie everyday, it will take about 30 years to reach 20,000 hours of viewing, during which time new technology will make the pj obsolete.

I would be more interested in professional reviews on the pq.

This tech would be a great benefit if we had HD broadcast.

You could basically replace your TV with this, but you still need a darkened room though, so still not 100% convenient.

With 20,000+ hrs, it would also be beneficial for commercial use like sports bars, etc.

I was at Embassy (salap sea bass! :D) a few nights ago and they were using a PJ on their main dining area, the image was a bit washed out compared to when I saw it long ago, the lamp must be needing replacment already.

Hopefully the reviews are good.  :)

atleast if this become mainstream, the disadvantages of pj regarding lamp cost and the inconvenience of changing will practically be a thing of the past.  :)

Good analysis.

Maybe then, "LCD vs Plasma vs LED PJ" comparison will be more feasible. Right now PJ cant compare to the 2 due to factors like lamp life, ambient light, shadows of your head  :D, etc.

PhlatLight LED for DLP Projectors...eliminating the need for lamp replacement!

Big News from Texas Instruments

June 18, 2008 — Today at InfoComm, an annual trade show dedicated primarily to commercial and industrial video displays held this year in Las Vegas, Texas Instruments made three major announcements, all related to DLP front projectors. The biggest news was the unveiling of a light engine that uses three PhlatLight LEDs—red, green, and blue—rather than a conventional white lamp and color wheel.

Developed by Luminus, PhlatLight LEDs last far longer than conventional lamps, eliminating the hassle and cost of lamp replacement. Instead of using a color wheel with a single DMD chip, the LEDs are turned on and off sequentially to illuminate the red, green, and blue portions of the image. This process occurs much faster than a color wheel-based system can manage, greatly reducing the chance of seeing the dreaded "rainbow effect."

Other claimed benefits include greater contrast, wider color gamut, and 30% less power consumption than conventional lamp-based projectors. Several manufacturers, including Optoma, are planning to introduce so-called "lamp-free" DLP projectors for the home-theater market as soon as late 2008

wow, sir matz, this is great news, and i read somewhere that during the last ces, texas instrument with its dlp tech was not represented in a big way because for direct view panels it can only participate via rear projection tvs which is slowly dying in terms of manufacturer support and of course from consumer's buying choice. but with this tech, i think they have found a way to reenter the ht business in a big way. hopefully these toys will not cost too much.  ;D ;D ;D
