hi thunderkiss65,

I used the procedure below when I set my player to multi-region. Note that upon upgrading the firmware to 0531, your player will set back to region 3. Just follow steps below if you want your player to set to region 0.

1. Turn on the player.
2. Open the tray.
3. Press the following sequence on the remote:
7  8  9  OK  0 (Zero, denotes region 0 or region free. For other regions, use another number which corresponds to it.)
4. The number 0 will appear on the lower left side of your screen. (this confirm that you have succesfully change your player to multi-region)

Can anyone comment on the audio performance of the 642? I'm contemplating getting a dedicated CD player in addition to my 642, but I just wanna hear other people's opinions if it would really be necessary.

Are you gonna use digital connections? If yes, then don't bother. If not, then go ahead and audition the CD player w/ your existing system.

Bakit sir? Does using digital connections take out the "flavor" of the source? Should I use stereo RCA connections then?  ???

Using digital connections means just having your player as transport. You won't be using the player's native DAC.

I'm sorry to bring this topic back alive but I don't think I have another choice now.
I have DVP 642/17 since 2004 and it worked great except for playing XVID files. So I finally desided to upgrade the firmware thinking that it's gonna help :(
Anyway, there is no sound now whatsoever and the screen is blue. The firmware I have installed is 1109. Does anybody have the original firmware for the player like this?
I've searched the internet but all the links take me to the same firmware upgrade on Philips site.
My email is  [email protected]
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I have Philips 642/69 originally delivered with 0531 which I later upgraded to 1103. The only degradation I see after the firmware upgrade is - divx movies are giving problems.

Divx movies start and play well for some time ... after sometime (5 mins to 30mins),   there the picture is lost , TV screen is full of green frinze and the player is hung, the remote keys do not work and I have to powercyle the DVD player. I have tried it with many divx movies, but hte results are still the same ... Those movies which palyed well earler are also giving this problem.

Nothing is changed expect the firmware on player so I guess it cud most probably the firmware that is giving problems.

could any kind soul email me the 0531 firmware with installation details - [email protected]

Thanks

Naresh

Careful about firmware upgrading. I have a friend who performed upgrade of firmware and unfortunately, nag black out yung unit.

By the way, what's the possible solution to this, according to Philips service agent, it can't be repaired anymore (bummer, how true?)

When you are performing a firmware upgrade make sure that your PSU does not trip. Or else its a bye bye. Make doubly sure that there are no scheduled brownouts or blackouts.

many thanks t_s_o_n_g ,

I have now downgraded ut unit to 0531 ... but the problem is still there ....  divx movies starts fine on it but after few mins the screen goes grainy, audio/video gone, DVD player's clock stops, and tray comes out after few secs.  I am having this problem with divx only... rest other (like DVD, audio/video CD etc )work fine.

It's not a media problem.. before this posting, I have checked many CDs and DVDs... but the results are still the same.

Is anybody having  else having this problem and any solutions recommended.

Regards,

Naresh

If you're not averse to tinkering with it and check the rubberbelt that activates the tray mechanism. Just look around the tray assembly and you'll see it. It's just like a black rubber band. Mine had the same symptom as yours and I found that the rubber belt was dislodged from the pulley wheel. Just had to ease it back on and it was ok again.
