Has anyone tried the new Photo Gallery feature?

Even after the firmware updated, it is still required to download it. Will give it a try.

It's just a new interface for viewing photos. It looks really cool but still not enough to make me want to keep my photos in my PS3. And with an 8 megapixel camera, I'll fill up my hard drive pretty quick. I have videos and DLC, games and game saves to worry about too.  :-\

your panel's internal scaler will automatically adjust so that the game's image fit the screen, as long as your panel can accept 1080p signals.

the samsung r8 will accept 1080p, that's why it has game mode to make the image fit for games.

merun ata setting wherein you can just leave the HDMI resolution settings to Auto :)

para native resolution ka lang... which is better than a downscaled 1080P IMHO :)

Those with HD videocam, have you try transfering your AVCHD camcoder video footage & burn into a regular DVD & view it in your PS3 at 1080i?

It's reported that some software or DVD writer that support AVCHD allow that. All the HD glory can be recorded/burned & viewed tru a regular DVD! :o

Since I already have a PS3 & DVD writer, all I need is a HD videocam. Maybe the tiny new SONY HD model (CX-100)will do...will get one soon!  ;D

Thanks Pao.

Because I'm contemplating about getting a PS3 or this LG BD390 Blu-ray player which can play .MKV file over USB flash disk or Hard Disk drive...since I have some collection already.  Since I already have an Xbox 360, would you guys think that PS3 is still way to go for Blu-ray player or considering this LG player would be fine..

Here's the specs and review for this player:  LG BD390 http://reviews.cnet.com/blu-ray-players-recorders/lg-bd390/4505-9991_7-33488056.html

There's another option. You can install PS3 Media Server on a PC/MAC and have that transcode the MKV and stream it via Ethernet to your PS3. Wired connection is best provided that your hardware is fast enough as well. It was posted a few pages back but for more info, check:

I'm using a Canon VIXIA HG20 and was able to burn my edited footages to a Dual Layer DVD in 1080P. The PS3 was able to read from the disc and played back in full HD glory... ;D

or instead of the lg bd player, you can also try oppo's bd player that is also known to play mkv files via flash drive or external hdd. defnitely a better bd / dvd upscaler and even audio player than the lg.

The problem with what you plan to do is that both players can only accomodate drives formatted in FAT32

Yup, but my LCD TV is only 42" i guess a 720p movie would be enough and i guess it would not exceed at least 4GB of size. Correct me if i'm wrong.  Coz i read that FAT32 can only accomodate a maximum file size of 4gb.

hi. you can convert your mkv files to a format the PS3 can read.  Try to google "mkv2vob".  Its a freeware which will convert your mkv files.  thanks

I've tried several ways to watch/transfer HD movies from my PC to my PS3.

(1)  VIA EXTERNAL HDD  (google mkv2vob)
If your file is greater than 4GB, the mkv2vob program will automatically split the file into a size that FAT32 can accomodate.  So you'll most likely have 2 parts for 1 movie.   As soon as you've loaded the 2 parts onto the PS3 harddrive, or via HDD, the PS3 has a feature that can automatically play the next video file.  You can find it under the PS3 settings.

Just ensure that the filenames are similar so that when placed in a directory, they are sorted one after the other, example: "Movie_part1" and "Movie_part2".  After the first video ends, the next one plays automatically.  The viewing experience will be disrupted by a little under 1 second, as the PS3 moves on to the "Movie_part2" file.

I found this option a lot more palatable than streaming the whole movie via WIFI from my laptop, as there is no stuttering since the whole movie is now on the PS3 HDD.

(2)  COPY FILE FROM PC TO PS3 VIA WIFI
If you don't want to split the file into 2, and just can't stand the one second delay from option 1, the other option is to copy the whole movie file from your PC to the PS3 via WIFI.  Use this program:

http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/?f=dl

You can share your PC movie file via the internet.  Just go to the PS3 internet browser and input the IP/web address that shows when you run the HFS program.  Copy the file to the PS3 HDD.  It will take about 1.5 - 2 hours to transfer a 4GB file to the PS3.  I just normally leave this program on overnight, as the transfer takes too long for my taste.

(3)  STREAM VIA WIFI  (google PS3 mediaserver)
Tried this several times but I have to lower the HD movie resolution so that the movie can stream without any stuttering.  And I already have a Core 2 Duo CPU. Note that the movies I play are usually 720p with 4GB sizes and up.  I have never, ever, been able to stream a 4GB and up file at the best possible resolution without any stuttering.  You can tinker with the settings to see what works on your home network.

You also need to have your PC turned on and WIFI or router on as well.  So imagine all the electronics turned on:  PS3, TV, WIFI, PC, Home Theater, etc. when using this option.

Among the 3 options I've tried, the option I use most often is just to split the file in order to be accomodated by FAT32.  Transfer via USB is fast even for 4GB up file.  The only downside is that there is short lag between the time file#1 stops and the time file#2 plays, which is just under 1 second I think.  If you already have videos stored on your PS3, try the automatic play feature and see if the lag between videos is acceptable to you.

Hope this helps.  Thanks.

Thanks for a well explained solution to my dilema, well i am now 70/30 on getting a PS3.  I have a contact which sells S$520 for a 160Gb capacity PS3. That's around almost P17K which i think is not bad at all.

A year ago I previously used my PS3 to play HD files via option 1 but with a DVDR not an HDD. Since i have an exponentialy growing collection  :D the conversion-burning-playing-change disk process eventually had a toll on me. My solution? I bought Popcornhour A100, but i sold the PCH already in exchange for HDX1000.

PS3 for my games, HDX1000 for my MKVs.  ;D ;D ;D

I manage to try out the HD video footage from my videocam & transfer it to AVCHD format then burn into a regular DVD. PS3 play it nicely & display its HD glory! Now I can plan for my next "Home Video" making... ;D
