When playing a game, does it install/update your PS3's FW? as far as I know, it doesn't update your PS3's FW unless you set the option to automatic update..

from what i recall RE5 gave a prompt that there is a need to install new firmware to be able to play the game. have not used the PS3 kasi as a BD movie player for quite sometime now since i have a stand alone BD player. it is only a couple of days ago when i tried watching movie using the PS3 and then the error messages appeared. I could have had this problem from the time of the FW update but have not realized that i did until i played a BD movie.

hopefully my problem is something that can be corrected either by repair or  another FW upgrade.

thanks very much!!!

^ yup, hopefully sir.. if you have a copy of the previous FW, FW3.0, why not try to downgrade it? it may fix the issue.. but im not sure if thats possible..

No complaints with the performance.  Played it for 8 hours straight at one point and never had a problem.  Works well with my Hori Arcade Stick, too.

Overall, it felt generally more responsive than my old Asian PS3 (which I have since sold).

I heart my slim.   ;D

Some BD's are slower to load than my old phat though, but they play fine naman.
thanks for the info bro  :)
i was opting to get a new fat ps3, but with that fw bug is a bit scary.  :(

bro I think it is irreversible, once ma-upgrade FW hindi na pwede balik sa old FW. I tried to revert back kaya lang hindi umubra. Nagkaroon kasi ng problem connecting to PS3 Media Server after mag-upgrade sa FW. Hindi ko na ma-play yung mga downloaded MKV files using PS3 MS.

thanks! just had mine changed and is working well again. The FW was also corrupted hence it does not work very well.

will the slim PS3 lens last considering the rigors of playing BD movies?

how long did your ps3 last before the lens failure?

i dont know whether your ps3 is the old model or the newer ones, because the newer ones (slim included) has dual lenses. but i think it should help lessen the wear and tear on the lenses.

mga two years but seldom used, weekends lang and not every weekend. mine has single lens lang (80GB Asian version). what the owner of the repair shop told me is for the two lens PS3 one lens reads bd disc and the other lens read DVD/CDs.

Tama ba talaga yun?  The firmware upgrade will somehow damage the lens?  How does that happen?

Same diagnosis rin with a friend's PS3 after upgrading.

Sad but true, here is the link  http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3updates&thread.id=122805

"the 3.0 firmware included a "feature" that increased the speed of the blu-ray drive spindle to help facilitate the faster game load times.  however the issues lies with the fact that not every ps3 uses the same motor in the blu-ray drive, or same blu-ray drive for that matter.  some of the drives can handle the extra speed while some others can not.  if your ps3 has a blu-ray drive that can not handle the extra spindle speed then you are just sol at this point."

Problem is, if you want to sign-in play online, play newer games or watch newly realeased Blu-ray movies . . . you are forced to update  :-\

good for you bro, what keeps me bothering is Sony hasn't released any fix for this yet & its over a month now. And for those who accidentally updated their firmware they are not allowed to revert back to an older version.

Ok, assuming you update and it conks out.  You go ahead and replace the lens.  Should replacing the lens solve the problem, or should we fear the same thing happening again with the new lens?

I dont have a first hand experience on this but in US, Sony charge those who got struck $150 for the Blu-ray drive, lens and/or internal hard drive.

I think nobody can tell now, firmware 3.01 wa released and is supposed to be the fix for the 3.0 freezing but what happened was it just aggravated the problem by causing the drives to also fail.

it should, although it wont be able to play some of the newer games and definitely cant go play online without the latest firmware.

Problem is, I think Sony is in denial that the new firmware has something to do with all the sudden failures.  An article I read a while back said that Sony claimed it as coincidental.

I'm not sure if they've recently changed their stand on the issue though.
