This daring promo did more and must have cost less than hiring Saachi and Saachi to make an advertising campaign.  100 of those bravias probabaly just cost them around $200,000 in actual production cost - a lot less than the advert fee charged by boutique ad firms.

But the word of mouth and press publicity, goodwill and the expectations generated worlwide is unmistakably huge.  From now on, ALL PS3 launches in every country will be attended by even longer queues in the hope of getting similar freebies.   ;D

Either Europe or Australian since both countries use PAL. San mo ba natanong yan? Nabasa ko rin na sa Singapore PAL din daw binebenta.

Wow what an amazing offer...even Spidey can't do that!  ;D

Now, looks who's more desperate... ::)

It does leave some taste of desperation considering the poor launches in France, Australia and New Zealand.  But I still think it was a brillant marketing move.  Though now  that it had sunk on me, I think if they had given away the PS3 free for the first 100 in the queue, that would have been just as brillant and much much cheaper.   ;D  But I have to say, the free 46" Bravia must have been calculated to promote not the PS3 as a gaming console, but as a Blu Ray player.  I am sure those 100 now owning bravias would be spending on BD titles.

The 46 Bravia is Sony's standard display in store demo booths in Tokyo and in game shows.  They probably have saturated the stores with enough demo booths but still had 100 excess displays for demo purpose.   Or baka factory refurbished the demo displays (which are practically brand-new in the first place), changed the tuner and color system to European standards then shipped out to Europe...he he he...but who the hell cares kung libre.   Nakakainggit ne.

If only Toshiba would match that kind of offer with their award winning Regza PZ2000.  Quite unlikely I think.

aside from playing Blu-Ray discs ... the PS3 can also play the 8cm discs used by Sony's new HD Handycams ( using the AVCHD format )
really convenient!
after shooting your home movies , just eject the disc from the Handycam and plop it in the PS3 and you're enjoying your home movies in all its HD gory/glory. :)
of course ... image quality and production values are not as good as those demo footages shown in stores but hey ; the familiarity  of places and faces more than compensates :)
these HD home movies may just be what the doctor ordered to fill up the time waiting for Blu-Ray movie discs prices to go down :)

20GB PlayStation 3 going out of production

Sony Computer has decided to stop production on this $499 model in North America to focus its selling energies on the higher capacity 60GB PS3.

Although priced steeper at $599, the 60GB model has proven more attractive than the 20GB model since the PS3 launched in the U.S. last year, according to the company.

“Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of 90% in favor of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly,” Sony spokesman Dave Karraker said. “In addition to the larger internal hard drive, the 60GB PlayStation 3 features added storage media slots and built-in wi-fi not found in the 20GB system. Based on retailer and customer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model.”

‘Price sensitivity is gone’

Retailers, who were informed of this decision prior to Sony’s public statements, seem mostly fine with the disappearance of the 20GB model. They believe consumers, who were willing to pay $499, are likely to make the slight jump up to enjoy more advanced features.

“In consumers’ minds, there is no real gap between the $499 and the $599,” said Jayme Kruse-Cordie, Hastings director of video and interactive gaming. “After $499, the price sensitivity is gone.”

20GB inventory sold out

Hastings quickly sold through its 20GB stock by the first few weeks in 2007.

Other stores will likely still be burning off existing 20GB inventory, but many have already sold out of supplies. As of today, BestBuy.com and CircuitCity.com were not offering the 20GB model. Both sites were only selling 60GB stand-alone systems or 60GB software-enhanced bundles.

Walmart.com was listing the 20GB model as out of stock.

Many chains are simply pleased that supply has improved for PS3, regardless of which model they can offer. Tweeter had hoped to offer the game console during the fourth quarter, but will now be able to start selling the product in early May, confirmed a company spokesman.

“We honestly just started fulfilling the pipeline with PS3 in the last four weeks,” Hastings’ Kruse-Cordie said. “Now we can start letting customers know that we will have it on a regular basis.”

Okay, I'm going to sound really daft here but I'm getting terribly frustrated. My PS3 is connected to my TV through an HDMI Cable. Is that it? is there another cable that I need to purchase so that I can connect it to my stereo? Do my stereo need to have specific female plugs? Which ones are they and what do they look like?

The Pq Is amazing but I'm just quite unhappy that I might not be getting the best sq I can get. TV speakers suck.

If you're using the HDMI as your video connection to the display then you can use the Optical digital out connection to your receiver for the audio.

To fully enjoy and/or get the most out of your PS3 - Get a receiver that will process the new (lossless) audio formats thru HDMI. So, your set-up will end up like these : PS3>HDMI>Receiver>HDMI>HD Display/TV

Also, a good 5.1 speakers setup or better yet 7.1 setup to go with your receiver with HDMI are necessary  as well to complete your lossless surround experience while watching all those (expensive) Blu ray movies.  ;D

Good luck!
