I tried watching pirated dvd on my ps3 and it works. Masisira kaya lens nito kung dun ko papanoorin ung mga pirated dvd's ko? I think the colors are better if you run hdmi compared to component 480p.

I think sayang lalo yung PS3 if you don't maximize it's use, unless meron ka nang upconverting DVD player dati pa. The pick-up lens mechanism should be sturdy enough to handle any recordable media.   Just make sure na malinis yung disk before you insert, and kung hirap basahin, don't force the issue.

An update to the PS3™ system software was released on May 24, 2007. If you update your PS3™ system, the system software will be version 1.80.

The PLAYSTATION®3 system software version 1.80 update includes the following:

Upscaling game or DVD output

-You can now upscale the video content of PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and DVDs to HD resolution.

PS/PS2 Upscaler
You can adjust settings to upscale video output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software.

Off              -Disable upscaled output.
Normal        -Upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen   -Upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image.

Note
If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].
PS/PS2 Smoothing
You can adjust settings to reduce the roughness of video from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software.

Off    - Disable smoothing.
On     - Use smoothing to reduce the roughness of the displayed image.

Notes
The [PS/PS2 Smoothing] setting can be used even when [PS/PS2 Upscaler] is set to [Off].
With some software, the smoothing effect may not be noticeable or image quality may be reduced if this option is set to [On]. In that case, set to [Off].

Upscaling DVD output
[DVD Upscaler] has been added as an option in  (BD/DVD Settings) under  (Settings). You can adjust settings for upscaled output of DVDs.

Off                   -Disable upscaled output.
Double Scale*    -Upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
Normal             -Upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.
Full Screen        -Upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image.

* This option can be used only when the PS3™ system is set to output video at 1080p or 1080i via an HDMI or component AV cable.

Notes
When playing copyright-protected DVD content such as the content on commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale the video content.
If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].

Copying saved data to a memory card
-You can now copy saved data from PlayStation® format software and PlayStation®2 format software to a memory card or a memory card (8MB) (for PlayStation®2). > See details

Using the DLNA client feature

based on my observation, mas clearer ang dvd movie using the ps3 compared sa pioneer 696 ko using hdmi cable both connected to my yammie 1600.
And after this version update na may dvd upscaler (SD resolution (480p/480i) to be displayed in HD resolution (1080p/1080i) , mas na enhanced ang video output. Parang blu-ray ang SD movie na pinapanood ko.  ;D

downloaded the update and currently fiddling with the settings now that upscaling is enabled on the ps3, looks good but the toshiba xa2 i have still looks better for dvds. good thing my ps3 is still relatively quiet as some are complaining that their units became noisier after the update.

yes it is......updated last night to 1.8FW through USB.   create folder "PS3" then subfolder "UPDATE".   Put the update file in the subfolder.  PS3 will recognize it via the storage media option.

already tried the media server funtionality feature but connections to my pc and laptop using wireless connection runs intermittent for the first time i configure it. But when I use a wired connection, it runs flawlessly viewing my pictures and audio files.
Also, didn't encounter noise in my unit after the firmware upgrade

1. Lossless audio is possible thu HDMI only. You will get the "core" audio thru optical which is not that bad at all..

2. Check the ratings on your htib speakers before connecting it to a receiver. I would recommend separate speakers if using a receiver though..

Okidoks.

To fully enjoy and/or get the most out of your PS3 - Get a receiver that will process the new (lossless) audio formats thru HDMI. So, your set-up will end up like these : PS3>HDMI>Receiver>HDMI>HD Display/TV

Also, a good 5.1 speakers setup or better yet 7.1 setup to go with your receiver with HDMI are necessary  as well to complete your lossless surround experience while watching all those (expensive) Blu ray movies.  ;D

That's great news now that PS3 can play (lossless) audio formats. Would that include both True HD & DTS MA?

Seeing quite a number of BD movies that I like esp with the 5-star rating of Pirates & soon to be released Spiderman...hmm...I'm indeed giving a second thought now to become a Neutral.  :-\

Does anyone know the current price of a PS3?

Thanks John & Raymond for the quick reply. As previously mentioned the 20gb is more than sufficient to play BD movies but considering the 60gb only cost about 5k difference I'm wondering if it's worth spending the extra as I'm not a game boy. :)

Paul, the 5k difference is justifiable na with the wifi, card readers and the extra hard drive space.    You'll enjoy downloading HD trailers in the playstation store..........those trailers are free for downloads.  :)
