I'll probably wait for a week or so before i upgrade to 2.4 firmware as to avoid traffic downloading of the said firmware by millions of Ps3 owners.
To those who have sucessfully downloaded the new 2.4 firmware give share ur feedbacks.
Tnx!

Sony Confirms Pulling PS3 Firmware Update

Sony (NYSE: SNE) on Wednesday confirmed that it has pulled the latest firmware update for PlayStation 3, because of reports from customers that it has caused their systems to stop working.

Sony released firmware 2.40 Tuesday, and reports of problems started flowing in soon after on the official PS3 message board.

"I downloaded version 2.40, put in Metal Gear Solid 4 [video game] and I get a black screen forever," one customer wrote. "I can't even get demos to start."

A Sony spokesman confirmed that the company pulled the firmware off its servers while it investigates the problem, which he said was experienced by a "limited number of consumers."

"In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing," the spokesman said in an e-mail to InformationWeek following a request for comment. "We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."

The problem was first reported by the video game site Joystiq.

Key improvements in the latest firmware are in-game access to instant messaging to communicate with other players and other PS3 features, such as checking downloads, changing settings, and playing music from the user's library. In addition, the firmware introduces a trophy system to award players for game performance.

Meanwhile, a security firm on Tuesday reported that Sony USA's PlayStation Web site had been the victim of a "SQL injection attack."

SophosLabs said that visiting the site ran a script that pretended to do an online security scan of the visitor's computer, and then presented a bogus warning message that the PC was infected with malware. "Users frightened by the scareware 'warnings' might rush to spend money on useless software," the security firm said in its blog.

SQL injection attacks involve passing malicious code to SQL databases as user input. An improperly configured or vulnerable SQL application can be made to execute that input. All that's needed is to add HTML into a Web page that calls a script on a malicious site.

more news about the 2.40 FW ....

Facing a PR nightmare, Sony was left no choice but to voluntarily pull the 2.40 firmware update off its servers until the issues can be isolated and resolved. Patrick Seybold, Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media for Sony Computer Entertainment, offered the following message on the official Playstation.com blog:

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

Update: We wanted to clarify our recommendation as there was some confusion to whether it originated from Sony. The recommendation to avoid using your PS3 if you've already downloaded firmware 2.40, howver, does not come from Sony. The recommendation is based on user accounts of freezes and crashing while using the system with the new firmware. There's no information available yet identifying which PS3 consoles are more likely to be affected, so it's a complete crap shoot at this point.

tricky question indeed.
Well since Sony pulled out the 2.40 FW, IMO, you might want to wait for updates before installing this.
So far, though, I have not experienced any problems despite having installed the 2.40 FW, whether for BD movies or games. I already downloaded and installed the 2.40 FW before news broke out about the "problem" regarding this update.

Oh my bad, I thought jiggs84 was referring to "is it safe to install games".  ;D

2.40 FW is already pulled out so if you haven't got it prior to that then you will not able to install until a newer FW is released.
My case is similar to JAQY888, hav einstalled 2.40 FW but so far haven't encountered any problem.

As other members suggested, it's probably the safest to wait for another update to ensure the "problems" are eradicated.

Sony releasing PS3 firmware 2.41 'midweek' say reps

The huge in-game XMB PS3 update that was pulled from PSN last week following technical issues will be re-released for download by Wednesday, CVG has been told.

According to customer support, firmware version 2.41, which should be clear of all errors, will out "midweek", although Sony is yet to make an official announcement to confirm that.

In case you missed it, Sony last week was forced to pull the hotly anticipated update after widespread reports of it breaking PS3 consoles.

The firmware is available to download from various website on the internet, but to be on the safe side you'd be best to wait for the update from Sony.

Great. Hope that this update does rectify the error(s) of the 2.40 FW.
Still, I will wait for news/comments regarding this 2.41 FW before installing it ... considering what just happened to the previous FW ... better to be safe than sorry  ;)

"food for thought" for PS3 users like us ....  ;)

Your PS3 Uses More Energy Than Your Fridge?!

In the last few years, products and appliances, from the supermarket to the car dealership, have become more energy-efficient. Could video games go green? According to Choice Magazine, it wouldn’t be a bad idea. Gaming systems, specifically PS3s, suck up a lot of electrical juice. But how much juice could a puny box possibly use, right?

In fact, leaving an inactive PS3 on costs nearly $250 a year in electricity bills, which is more than a refrigerator costs to run. This shocking outcome was determined by various energy tests conducted to calculate both the power usage and cost wastage.

The tested suspects were an array of popular gaming systems in their three different “on” modes: “standby,” “on but idle,” and “on and in use.” Along with the PS3, systems such as Xbox and Wii are rather power hungry. Out of the bunch, PS3 has the biggest appetite, 360 is close behind, while Wii is on more of a diet. Even when “idle” (on, but not in use), the PS3 consumes more power than any of the other devices that were tested.

So what does this mean for PS3 junkies? Fortunately, being energy efficient does not mean limiting video games to once a week, playing in the dark, or chaining yourself to tree trunks in front of loggers. According to Choice Magazine, it simply means turning off your gaming devices when not in use, as opposed to leaving the system on and simply switching off the TV.
