The 2.60 firmware update is already out

* Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
* DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here's what aeris posted on playing mkv on a PS3:

Quote
I've been using my PS3 in watching downloaded mkv files. To view mkv files on your PS3 you have to extract the m2ts file from the mkv or matroska file which is just a container using tsmuxer software in just 2 to 3 minutes using your pc. The resulting m2ts file is basically the same file used in blu-ray movie discs & there's no conversion during the process. You still get the same 720p or 1080p quality those with nmts or htpcs are getting when watching mkv files. I am also using an external hard drive in FAT32 format connected to the PS3 via usb to store & watch m2ts files with less than 4gb file size. (limitation of the FAT32 formatted hard drives) For larger m2ts files (4gb up), I use the HFS software to download & copy the file to the PS3's hdd or stream m2ts files from my pc to the PS3 thru the PS3's internet browser & my router. All these softwares are freewares & downloaded from the internet. If you already have a PS3 & don't have extra funds to get an nmt or htpc this is the way to view downloaded mkv files. There's more you can do with your PS3 aside from playing video games & watching blu-ray discs, just google it

Can the PS3 play MKV files?

The PS3 isnt capable of reading MKV files yet but there is a software called MKV2VOB. Download it and use it to convert MKV files so it can be played by the PS3. Medyu matrabaho lng nga.
Thanks to sir aeris for sharing his knowledge to the PDVD community.

I installed 2.60.  No issues encountered.  It enables non-members to enter Playstation Store.  So although I am member, I didn't have to sign in anymore when I downloaded the FEAR 2 demo (not my kind of game pala). Also the PS3 utility for handling photos was vastly improved.

i would get the 37 lx80. almost all people here will advise you to get the the bigger panel as you wont see much difference on a 1080p on a 32 incher anyway. go bigger!  ;D

Just put a folder named PS3 on the root directory of the drive. Inside the PS3 folder put another folder named Update. Now, put the downloaded firmware patch on the Update folder.

Insert the flash drive on your PS3, go to system update then choose the second option (can't remember what it's called). It will automatically detect the firmware patch if you did the directory structure correctly.

Sir, pardon me for my noob question. If my PS3 is connected to an AVR (thru optical cable), will the audio of the m2ts film output as a DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1? Thanks!

if audio of m2ts file is DD5.1, you get DD5.1. If 2 channel or stereo, use your avr's dolby pro-logic to output 5.1 surround sound. Sadly, the PS3 can't decode DTS on m2ts files. You need another freeware to convert the dts track of the m2ts file to ac3 or DD5.1. (i use ezmkvdts2ac3)

Yes sir, it is. noob as in novice.

Thanks for the immediate reply. May I ask sir, what format/extension should I use to convert .mkv or other video files to be able to output the DTS 5.1 audio of the movie?

Thanks for the immediate reply. May I ask sir, what format/extension should I use to convert .mkv or other video files to be able to output the DTS 5.1 audio of the movie?

from the PS3 online user's guide:

    * MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
    * MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)

    * AVI
     - Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
     - Motion JPEG (μ-Law)

    * AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
    * DivX
    * WMV
    * - VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

Hints

    * Depending on the data type, some files may not be playable or some control panel options may not function during playback.
    * Some video files distributed over the Internet have playback restrictions. For details, contact the content provider.
    * To play WMV format files, you must go to (Settings) > (System Settings) and set [Enable WMA Playback].
    * When using a USB adaptor to play video files, you may need to use a USB adaptor (not included) that supports copyright-protection features (to play copyright-protected files).
    * When using a USB adaptor to play AVCHD-format video files saved on Memory Stick™ media, use a device that supports Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0).
    * WMV format copyright-protected files cannot be played.

Sir aeris30, suppose I have a DVD movie, for example Mr. and Mrs. Smith, whose audio has DTS 5.1. If I rip/convert the DVD/movie to mpeg format and as mentioned earlier the PS3 is connected to AVR, will I get DTS 5.1 output on my speaker system?

Mga gurus, I would just like to know the audio capabilities of the PS3. I have here several noob questions:

Setup No.1: PS3-HDMI-AVR-HDMI-Plasma
                                     -Speaker
PS3 audio set in Linear PCM:
- When watching Blu-Ray movies, is it the PS3 that decodes both HD Audio formats (Dolby True-HD and DTS-MA) and sends them to the AVR as uncompressed Linear PCM? Does this mean that the AVR will be in multichannel mode and thus will not process anything and will purely "pass-through" each channel to its respective speaker?

PS3 audio set to bitstream:
- When watching Blu-Ray movies, is it true that the PS3 is not capable of passing HD audio (lossless) to the AVR, only DD or DTS (lossey)? Is this also true even if it is streamed to an AVR that can decode these higher audio codecs?

Setup No.2: PS3-HDMI-plasma
                      -Optical-AVR-Speaker
PS3 audio set in Linear PCM:
- When playing Blu-Ray movies, is it true that the AVR will not be able to receive the full decoded linear PCM stream due to bandwidth limitations of optical/coaxial?

PS3 audio set to bitsream:
- When playing Blu-Ray movies, is it correct to say that the PS3 will send all audio as un-decoded "packaged" audio to the AVR which processes the audio and outputs to the speakers but in DD or DTS (lossey) formats only?

Thanks in advance!
