I don't own a PS3...still waiting it to support bitstreaming of lossless audio. :D  The answers to your questions can be found in this PS3 FAQ Thread at AVSForum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=931796

Setup No.1: PS3-HDMI-AVR-HDMI-Plasma-Speaker
PS3 audio set in Linear PCM:
- When watching Blu-Ray movies, is it the PS3 that decodes both HD Audio formats (Dolby True-HD and DTS-MA) and sends them to the AVR as uncompressed Linear PCM? Does this mean that the AVR will be in multichannel mode and thus will not process anything and will purely "pass-through" each channel to its respective speaker?

A: Yes, the output audio of the AVR will be in LPCM 7.1 or 5.1 as the case may be.  Please refer to the table in the link provided.

PS3 audio set to bitstream:
- When watching Blu-Ray movies, is it true that the PS3 is not capable of passing HD audio (lossless) to the AVR, only DD or DTS (lossey)? Is this also true even if it is streamed to an AVR that can decode these higher audio codecs?

A: Yes.  PS3 doesn't support bitstreaming of lossless audio.  It can only pass/bitstream lossy audio (DD or DTS) to the AVR, which obviously cannot convert the signal back to lossless audio even if it is capable of decoding lossless audio in the first place.  Garbage in = garbage out principle.

Setup No.2: PS3-HDMI-plasma-Optical-AVR-Speaker
PS3 audio set in Linear PCM:
- When playing Blu-Ray movies, is it true that the AVR will not be able to receive the full decoded linear PCM stream due to bandwidth limitations of optical/coaxial?

A:  Based on the table in the link provided, you'll only get 2 channel PCM (lossless audio) if you set PS3 audio in linear PCM and connect it via Toslink to AVR

PS3 audio set to bitsream:
- When playing Blu-Ray movies, is it correct to say that the PS3 will send all audio as un-decoded "packaged" audio to the AVR which processes the audio and outputs to the speakers but in DD or DTS (lossey) formats only?

A: Yes.  When you say bitstream, the player sends raw digital signal to the AVR.  In this case, the PS3 bitstreams raw lossy digital signal for the AVR to decode. Result:  DD or DTS only.

You just have to select files you want to share then you can stream it via wifi. PS3 will then connect to it and be able to play it in your tv. Yes, it works on vista. :D

new version of ps3 media server!

mercredi 4 février 2009
v1.04
Hi,

here's the new version!... some explanations about the new "video copy" feature: in previous versions, you couldn't copy any transcoded videos on your ps3, due to a virtual size of 94gb... now it's possible, with this option enabled. Be careful: if you want to use that feature, it's recommended to set a reasonable bandwidth limit in transcode options, because transcoded videos will have no fixed size, and you could fill up your ps3's hard drive pretty quickly with default settings !

PS3 Media Server v1.04 for Windows/Linux/OSX

Here's the changelog:

- Changes / Features

. New option to enable video copy on ps3
. RAW images thumbnail support: CR2/CRW/PEF/NEF/ORF/SRF/MRW/DNG/ARW/RAF
. New extensions supported: SHN/M2V/M2P
. tsMuxer engine can now mux or reencode in AC3/PCM all audio tracks in real time
. Add the experimental mencoder build for multicore on OSX
. DVR-MS remuxer now included by default in Windows package
. New translations: Spanish (thanks to Jose from playstationhoy.com), Dutch (thanks to Vincent Meylof), German (thanks to Jeuki), Russian (thanks to Peter Klassen), Polish (thanks to Maciej Bocian), Greek (thanks to Alexander Polichroniadis), Portuguese (thanks to Hugo Sousa), Finnish (thanks to Ove Sentlig), Norwegian (thanks to Ball80 and Topguy), Swedish (thanks to Dusan Ilic) and Japanese (thanks to Yu)

- Fixes

. tsMuxer's AC3/LPCM encode/muxing + Mencoder's LPCM remuxing now working on Linux
. Fixed LPCM seeking issue
. Fixed regression with PicasaWeb images feed
. Changes in subtitles loading / Fonts support (Default/ASS/Embedded Fonts)
. Fixed channels order with tsMuxer engine's DTS->AC3 option
. Transcode buffer wasn't fully released after end of video
. Fixed bug with shared folders selection on Windows
. Fixed periodic alive messages sent to ps3

I have a ps3 and most of the time it is my son who regularly use it to play games. As to watching BD, i have a sony stand alone player in my home theater. One time, i tried playing a concert bd on the ps3. The display showed only 1080i. I double checked the ps3 video setting it was already set in 1080p. Why is it only in 1080i? I have hdmi cable connected from tv to ps3.

I don't know if my query had already been answered from the past pages. Sorry can't back read anymore because this thread had already 60 plus pages. Thank you.

What HDTV model are you using? Could it be that your set is actually 1080i?

Yeah, it could be that the HDTV's max resolution is only up to 1080i that's why even if you set the ps3 to output 1080p, it'll still show 1080i.

Thank  you for replying. I am using Toshiba 42xv540U which is a full hd.

I tried playing Casino Royale and it did display 1080p. Maybe the 2 concert BD is in 1080i format only. I thought all the while that all BD are 1080p. The 2 concert bds are Chris Botti and Destiny Child.

&

Yup, video resolution for the two titles you mentioned are only 1080i
Not all BDs are released with 1080p video resolutions ..... especially concert BDs

In fact, these concert BDs are also in 1080i format only .....

I see, that's new info to me. I thought all BDs were 1080p too.

I'm waiting for my Adventures of Mimi BD right now, maybe I should change my output resolution to 1080i when I watch it. What do you guys think? My HDTV's max resolution is only 1080i but I usually output in 720p when watching movies and playing games.

Kasi pag 720p hi-def pa din naman...same with a 1080i output hence the BD format. Baka mas ok pa if you sue 720p instead of 1080i.

im kind of curious, is the region lock for bd movies in ps3 in the hardware? or software? if software then, there is a possibility that in the future ps3 can play all regions of bd movies? :o

yeah i guess i'll just use 720p, dati kasi when i tried 1080i parang shaky yung picture in some parts, lalo na kunwari panoramic shot tapos nag move from left to right. thanks!
