I too am having a hard time looking for a plate amp that suits my needs. Maybe we can start a group buy?
Anyway, back to topic.
I have considered using car amps too, but here are my concerns:
1. That particular amp that you have on the link is not a good amp, and may not take the load of 2 subs.
2. If you intend to use a car amp for home subs, its best to look for one that is:
2.1 a high-current design (can sustain a 2 ohm or greater load, and doubles its power when you increase the load)
2.2 power efficient.... as in Class D mono, or Class T digital designs.
3. Introducing an outboard step-down transformer may create a nasty hum at around 50/60Hz.
4. Its better if the amp has a 0 to 180 phase adjustment
5. Its better if the amp has an infinitely adjustable crossover (not just 3 positions like that amp)
6. Its better if it has a high-level input
