definitely!  a lot of the newer A/V receivers are very good in this area.  matching the speakers, source and cable is the key.  :)

gren,

that's a great link, better than most "advice" columns. Much of it is already common knowledge but the one about "Upgrading: When to Stop" should be mandatory reading for all of us, hehe.

I am new in setting up my HT. What are the advantages and the disadvantages of having a:

A) 6.1 set up
B) 5.1 set up
C) 2 channel set up

What is the least expensive but quality AVR that one can get in setting up a HT?

Thank you...

a and b:) the advantage of 6.1 is having a back surround channel. if your left and right surrounds are too far apart from each other, you'd sometimes lose a bit of imaging there. the back surround takes care of that.

c:) a sony or kenwood receiver is as cheap i'll go. And even then the cheaper ones are mostly good for satellite speakers upto smallish bookshelves lang.

1st set...

how will i know if a dvd player has a dts decoder or none? im asking this coz i got the chance to audition the daewoo 802 dvd player. ive noticed that the player doesn't carry a dts logo neither sorround or out, only dolby digital. so i presumed that it only has an ac-3(DD) decoder. but to my biggest surprise, when i open the audio menu, it contains 3 options, ac3 5.1, dts 5.1 & stereo, so which is which?

2nd set:

All DVDs that I know of are endoded with DD as their default multi-channel audio format. Though some are in mono or stereo only depending on the film master.

A DVD with DTS encoding should still play as it usually has a DD track which the player senses and will play only the DD track or, if you choose, the 2 ch PCM track which is standard for all players.  Exceptions are the Columbia/Tristar SupertBit labels, most of which have  DTS tracks only.  So you may not hear any sound.

 1st set

f a player has a DTS option in its menu, the player may have an internal decoder or at the very least, pass the DTS signal out its digital terminal.  Not putting the logo on the face may just be a manufacturing oversight.  You can always test by playing the DTS tracks on the DVD.  If you can hear sound in a set-up with analog connection between the player and the receiver, then it has built-in DTS decoder.  Otheriwse, there's none.

thanks av_phile1.

can i just test the dts decoding functionality by selecting dts ch5.1 in the audio menu-->inserting a dvd that carries a dts logo only? if its yield a sound then it has a decoder, if it's none, there r 2 things, first it only has dts output & 2ndly no decoder at all. tama ba ako bro? wla kc akong amplifier.

Hi! I'm a real newbie here. Thanks

PaulNikki, not familiar with the model of your dvd player. but if it is a stand-alone player, then you will be needing a receiver or an amp.

the outputs of stand-alone dvd players can't drive the speakers properly.

Yes you still need amplifer or receiver unless if the package you will buy from Daichi or DTX is their HTIB (meaning 5.1 amplied with active subwoofer).

Nakakabit lang siya sa TV ko na Sony AR21N60 using the generic cable. Ang sound nga pala ng TV ay 10w each.

If the 5.1 dai-ichi model is self-powered, then you can connect this directly to the dvd player via its 5.1 analog RCA outs. Otherwise you would need a 5.1 HT receiver.

pwede kung merong left and right audio out yung tv mo, pero even if, i doubt if you'll get a semblance of what HT is with this setup

How about mga Sir if i'm using a old dolby pro-logic receiver, do i need to go on V type (like Rear Speaker output should be higher than the front Speaker, and center speaker should lower than the Front Speaker)? or let it be flat? TIA

Analog (A) or digital (D) recording equipment was used in the recording, mixing and mastering sessions

Like DDD - Digital ang ginamit sa entire recording, mixing to mastering.

AAD - Analog Recording and mixing; Digital ang mastering

ADD - Analog ang Recording; Digital ang mixing and mastering sessions

Help!(newbie)

hello,

I'm sorry but I don't know much yet about speakers but I'd love to have 5.1 speaker system. I have several questions:

1. I heard that there are active and passive speakers, what's their difference?

2. I've seen DVD players, specially those new ones with DTS decoder already. How can I achieve a 5.1 experience if my DVD player doesn't have a DTS decoder? (actually my DVD player is a PS2)

3. Is there a 5.1 speaker system that has only 2 inputs(left and right) and not 6 coming from DVD player that has DTS decoder?

4. Is there a 5.1 speaker system that has a DTS decoder? If so, what brands and models are these and where can I get them? (I'm looking for a low-end only. ex. nextbase) :)

I know guys that my questions is redundant, only asked in different angles... but I don't know how to ask it the right and efficient way.

thanks in advance guys. :)

here are MY answers to your questions:
Q1: Active speakers have built-in amplifiers. Passive speakers don't. So with active speakers, you don't need an amplifier anymore. With passive speakers, you do.
Q2: To my knowledge, the PS2 has a digital audio out. If it does, this means, you need a digital amplifier to be able to decode that digital signal and utilize the 5.1 audio.
Q3: Yes, there are. But this doesn't allow you to experience 5.1 audio. The only ways you can experience 5.1 audio is by either, digitally, using a digital amp with a digital source (i. e. DVD player), or analog, having a 5.1 channel amp and a source that has a built in digital decoder.
Q4: Yes, there are. But most 5.1 speaker system that has digital decoding properties are quite expensive. The most inexpensive 5.1 system that has digital decoding properties that I've seen so far are the ones from Kinyo (around 7K at Raon). It has 5 satellites and a sub and is Dolby Digital certified and has Pro logic capabilities for 2ch sources (i.e. audio cds, vcds). Maliit lang sya. There are also 5.1 systems that are inexpensive, but cannot decode digital signals, bale they're just 5 speakers na may amp lang and may sub, they rely on the on-board decoder of the dvd player, since your PS2 doesn't have this, this wouldn't be appropriate for you, unless you decide to buy an inexpensive dvd player(2.5K) that has a built in decoder.

Now, note that I never mentioned DTS in any of my answers. Let's get something clear. DTS is kinda like a brand of digital encoding and decoding. Dolby is another. Those two are kinda similar. There's Dolby Digital, and then there's DTS. Almost all the time, if a certain equiptment is Dolby certified, it is also DTS certified. But there are, of course, equiptments that can decode Dolby, but can't decode DTS. So, be careful about this. My friend has a xenon dvd player that has this problem. Now, DTS has become more popular these days than Dolby because DTS has lesser compression, resulting in a clearer, more natural sound. Dati kasi, Dolby was like the forerunner in this field, ngayon medyo nauuna na ang DTS, kaya medyo mas naging standard ang DTS kesa sa Dolby. Now, since you're on a budget, a 5.1 system like the Kinyo I suggested might be adequate for you already since you're using your PS2 as a player which doesn't have a built-in digital decoder. Plug and play na lang yan. The only reason why some enthusiasts opt for dvd players with built-in decoders is because of the fact that you don't need a digital amp to decode the 5.1 audio, since digital amps are quite expensive (12K up, amp pa lang yan). They just buy inexpensive amps that have 5.1 input (3.5K) and speakers to go with it/or complete 5.1 systems(with speakers and amps). Some just buy a Home-theater-in-a-box, like nextbase, may dvd player na, speakers, and amp na. These start from 8K up. Now, also remember the disadvantage of buying complete systems, they're much harder(costly, too) to upgrade and might have limited options, too. Buying your equiptment component by component is more ideal since mas madaling mag upgrade and mas mama-maximize mo ang use nya(i.e. buying an amp would enable you to use it for other sources like a vhs, tuner, cassette, vcd players, etc.). Now, don't worry about asking questions, because that's one of those times that you learn. Besides, ever heard of the expression, "teaching is learning again". TC, bro.

If you really want to experience the full capability of Dolby Digital and DTS decoded DVDs, you need to get at least an entry level of branded HT equipment. I was told that generic amps are not really good because it is only prologic. If the seller is saying that it is 5.1 channel, dont believe in them. It is only prologic which means that it can only produce 4 channel output.

Hope this will help you...  :D

Bro,
I just wanna say na meron naman talagang generic na 5 channel talaga, try reading sa forum about ng Sakura amps, there are a couple of guys there that can attest to that. They've mentioned the Sakura AV-387/377. And meron ding Sakura na 5 channel amp talaga without any processors like ProLogic. These guys have these equiptment, so they kinda know. I also happen to own a Sakura too. And besides, pages plans to use his PS2 as his player, so he needs a digital amp. Out of the question ang generic amps with 5ch inputs. I only suggested the Kinyo because he mentioned that he's on a budget and this is the most inexpensive system I've seen that would be appropriate to use with his PS2. :)
