saw it in the appliance store with a carpeted yamaha section near the foodcourt, i think the last time i saw it was mid-september. if yupangco has no stocks left just save up and get a used 5.1 receiver and speakers+sub, it'll cost more than that multimedia speaker set but the added expense should be worth it.

newbie here,

if wharfs are good for entry level HT setups what would be a good speaker system for mid-range HT setups? i'm saving for an mid-range receiver kasi like denon 2308 or onkyo 605/705? not sure kasi if i will consider HK 337 wala pa daw dito sa pinas and sobra mahal mid range yamaha ung 1800 ata pinaka lowest model na may pre-outs.

sir

337 meron na try looking to arch. Audio in makati

For 60k budget for everything, you might need to settle for entry levels first.

If you go for a mid level speaker like the M52 right away, you might not be able to make it sing well anyway. They are great speakers, but they sing with matching mid level gears, w/c the 60k budget might fall short of.  :-\

For 60k, try getting the Denon 1907 (Or Onkyo 604 , but it doesnt have pre outs) plus wharfe bookshelf, center bipole & a good sub, maybe a Velodyne CHT-10r.

I guarantee you that you will get more from this config than going for floorstanders plus a lesser sub.

I know sir.

Peace, I am merely addressing the 2nd part of your statement for the sake of the newbie.
The premise is that even if the newbie buys the M52's, the remaining budget from the 60k will cripple him from getting the best matching receiver possible to get the best out of his system.

No ill intentions here. I am an M52 user/fan myself.  :)

Go for the 9.1's , center & dipole surrounds. These will cost you about 15k.

the Denon 1907 on sale now for 16.5k, Velo for around 25k (dont know exact price).

These will fit your 60k budget and will blow you away in HT and gaming, more than getting floorstanders and a lesser sub.

sir,
mas ok ba performance ng 9.1 kesa sa 9.4?

9.1 + speaker stand = 7k
9.4 =9.5k

add na lang ako ng konti for the 9.4. is this advisable?

May nakapagsabi sa akin na floorstanders daw more of pang-music.  Bookshelf more of pang-movie na 'pwede na' for music.  Tama ba, mga guru?  If so, then I guess, since 50/50 ka, go with the 9.1.

for movies:
if you don't have a budget for a subwoofer, then get a floorstander with more bass.  The 9.1 (bookshelf) won't be enough for those scenes requiring low bass frequencies (ie. explosions, sound effects, drums, ka-booms).

for music:
9.1 is great, as long as the type of music doesn't need too much bass (like michael jackson stuff).

for large rooms:
perhaps 20sqm or more, I'd go with the floorstanders whether I have a subw or not.

iL be getting an Atlantic Technology 2200 SR for my rears today.  Its a dipole/dipole type.  But it costs about the same price of my Monitor Audios fronts and center combined.  Ok lang kaya ito?  Subwoofer ko naman AT din eh. hehe.

Normally I would spend more money on the fronts...Why not buy better fronts and move your MA to the rears  ;D

I laughed so hard with that statement!  :D :D :D

It reminds me of my PC building days... Konti na lang 80gig HD na...konti na lang xxx na. etc.

Later the total is  :o

I use AT dipoles, they are great in doing their surrounds when placed as side surrounds. Its hard to pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

The idea is to have 5 matching size speakers for HT, for seamless panning. It is the ideal.

See HT magazines installed by pro installers, they use bookshelf size/type speakers of identical sizes for all 5-7 speakers.

You are going to set it to SMALL setting on your receiver anyway, unless you have a 200w power amp (for clean power) and want to set your floorstanders to LARGE to rely on it for bass.

But for me, nothing beats a good powered sub. Thats why at the very least, if I had 60k budget and start my HT all over again. I will prioritize my sub, then get BS (instead of a FS) then the cheapest AVR with pre-outs I could get for future power amps.

Oh, and I will also follow Philjonc's advice to look at the B/sell section. 60k will go a long way if you dont mind pre-owned items.

My worry about this is baka matabunan ng surrounds mo yung fronts and center especially on those scenes na halos nagsasabay-sabay na ang mga tunog. Just always remember these things in buying speakers for HT...

1. Perfectly matched - same brand, same impedance (ohms), same wattage
2. Almost perfectly matched  ;D  -  same impedance (ohms)

Hope this helps bro :)

Yup, there's a thread here before about speaker's sensitivity and it's effect on your receiver, di ko lang mahanap... basta it's all about the heat issues of the receivers caused by some speakers with low impedance or set-ups with different impedance. I hope someone in this thread can technically explain this para sa ating mga hindi masyadong techie :)

Anyway, too much heat can damage your receiver bro, better safe than sorry :)

From what I know, receivers heat up when impedance is 4 ohms and below.  Receivers are made to drive 6 ohms and 8 ohms sensitivity.  Pero para mas timbre match, il just go with MA rears pag available na.  Naubusan kasi ako eh.  Tnx Reynold.

Please share your experience..... ;) Does this mean to save money, I should buy a good powered sub rather than those "budget" sub?  I believe you tried those "budget" sub too, which of those you liked best?

Hi sir Matzter,

Please share your experience..... ;) Does this mean to save money, I should buy a good powered sub rather than those "budget" sub?  I believe you tried those "budget" sub too, which of those you liked best?

If I may answer, I think what matz is saying is instead of spending more money in buying a floorstanding speaker, you should just get a bookshelf (preferably a good one with atleast a min of 6" woofer) and used the difference in cost(savings) for  getting a powered sub whether it being a mid level or a budget sub. In ht, speakers having woofers not bigger than 8" will just be set to small anyways(avr speaker setting). And even if your main speakers has 8"woofers it would still not be better compared to subs having a 10" or 12" or more so 15" woofers esp in demanding explosion scenes.

Reason why most people get floorstanders is bec they want to integrate their audio and video set-up. Bec for audio, They prefer to have a tight and fast bass response where in a floorstander would excel even with out using a sub as compared to just using BS(bookshelf)+sub. Most subs having woofers bigger than 10" would not give favorable result in audio(unless you use a high end sub which is really very costly). But hey its your money and nothing really beats the sight of having those big floorstanders in your room ;D satisfaction is the key ;) Also be prepared to shell out additional money in powering those FS. Also try to consider your room size, since small rooms with FS tend to sound boomy most of the time.  :(

Hirap talaga mag decide mga bros,But lesson I learned from this hobby is integrating your audio and video set-up sometimes is more costly than having separate set-ups for both needs. With separate set-ups you dont even need to compromise on qualities you'll need for each application :) If you are more into audio, try to have a set-up that will excel in audio, but if you're more into movies then I guess its only logical to have a set-up that will really please you everytime you watch a movie ;) Ngayon ang problem is kung 50-50 na ;D ;D ;D
