Canon Abandons Promising SED TV Technology
Thursday May 27, 2010

What seemed like a promising flat panel television technology apparently has turned into an also-ran as a result of Canon's announcement that they will no longer pursue the development of flat panel TVs based on SED technology.

Canon halts development of SED TV
by Matt Morgan on 05/25/2010I

May 25, 2010 — It was to be a new era: The surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) promised to bring the lightning-fast response times and high contrast of traditional CRT TVs to the flat-panel generation.

... So what went wrong? Well, Canon came up against legal problems: It was sued by the US company Applied Nanotech for patent infringement. Toshiba then stepped down from the joint venture, and the global economy entered a massive downturn. Somewhere in the midst of this financial storm, Canon must have decided that SED just wasn’t worth the risk any longer, especially in the face of continuing improvements to LCD and plasma technology. Many of the HDTVs currently on the market are almost as flat and contrast-rich as SED could ever hope to be.

http://ces.cnet.com/8301-33379_1-57358345/toshiba-glasses-free-3d-tv-demo-it-works-just-not-very-well/
Pero at least they're innovating

Yes. Was able to watch it at Greenbelt aisle. Not clean at this point in time - but you can notice some of the run effectively made. But my eyes get easily strained watching 3D, or was it because the 3D was not perfectly executed?

ANd yes again, it is a matter of time that we may not need 3D glasses anymore if Tosh will be able to perfect the glass-free 3D technology implem.

Perhaps. They better be in the boat while it's new and hugely profitable. Both companies have been bleeding lately.

Meanwhile....

Chinese and Taiwanese firms are busy doing their "research" on the technology as well.

Soon they will have this too:
