Modding Generic DVD Players
« on: Mar 07, 2007 at 09:07 AM »
Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone can help me satisfy my curiosity regarding this idea I have in mind. I wanted to know if anyone of you had gutted in their warranty-lapsed generic dvd players. I just wanted to know how is the dvd drive connected to the mainboard of player.

Last year I've chanced on a website that says taiwan-based dvd players have an IDE interface from the dvd drive to its mainboard. With this setup, I became curious of 2 possibilities. (1) I could replace a busted dvd drive of a generic dvd player with a commercially available slimline dvd drive or (2) replace it altogether with a hard drive.

Of course there are firmware considerations with each generic dvd player but I would like to hear experiences from those of you who may have already tried it or anyone who are technically inclined to entertain my hypothetical idea.

Thanks!

Considering the cost of generic DVD players nowadays it's not worth the effort.

For all practical purposes you can never be more right  ;D

What I'm looking for however is to satisfy my curiosity regarding this possibility! I just find it exciting modding as-built equipment into something more than what it was designed for. And I honestly think modding cheap dvd equipment is more sensible than hacking the much more expensive branded ones, right  ;)

to add to that the hardware involved in interfacing the IDE drive may not fully utilize the host drive like read speeds etc. etc..

pwede ba i-apply sa generic dvdplayers yung opamp tweak na ginagawa sa surplus cdplayers? I imagine the dvdplayer circuitry would be alot more miniaturized pero there's no harm in asking ;D

Kung may optical or coax out yung dvd mo, bili ka ng outboard na DAC, para maganda yung sounds.  Did that with my 5 year old Pioneer DV355 and my Airport Express, kung medyo mahal yung bibili ng magandang DVD/CD player.  Kung may pupuntang HK, yung Lite DAC-AH P5k lang, and yung Zhalou mga 8k lang.
