HD DVD PRESS CONFERENCE, IN FAST FORWARD

After yesterday's Blu-ray press conference, Toshiba fired back...over the course of two very, very long hours. And by "fired back," we really mean gave a bunch of presentations that were too long. So we're giving you a fast forward version of the conference...that still feels a bit like slow-mo, but here is the meat of it: Running through Toshiba's game plan, Fujii went through the 3-pronged strategy of HDD, HD DVD and SD in Toshiba's multimedia approach. He also mentioned, "I'm sure withing three years the price of 32GB of flash memory will be the range of $100 dollars," and that optical discs would be around in, "30, 40, even 100 years."

The show opens with Yoshihide Fujii introducing a video. It's a CGI wonderfest, best transcribed from my notes:

"A rotating metal globe shoots a laser. Stuff lights up. It's a submarine! It's a, wait, pirate ship! WITH JETS ON THE BACK. Now it's flying. Best video ever. Weird galaxy thingies now. Lots of floating metal balls. Pink elephants fly past the screen. Pigs. The word you were looking for was "pigs."

Ironically, they showed off the same Harry Potter and Oceans 11-13 packs that would be coming to HD DVD that we just saw mentioned in the Blu-ray conference. They will also get an exclusive with Battlestar Galactica and the original Star Trek. And of course, there's The Matrix. As said best in a second video, "Go ahead, take the red pill!"

I expected a smattering of stats to clash in direct opposition with Blu-ray claiming a substantial lead. But the HD DVD conference sidestepped overall sales numbers. They preferred points like:
- "The hi def format is about stand alone consoles, not game machines"
- "For every 2 ps3's, one movie is sold. While 4 movies are bought for every [HD DVD] player"
- "Many Blu-ray owners will only get advanced features if they buy new players with BD Java..."
and my personal favorite:
- "The consumer is pretty happy with the experience they get with DVD."

Instead, they focused on their success with the PC market, claiming a 70% share of European IT market.

And that's the show. Pretty long for fast forward? Let's just say that before I went in, I never had to dye my pubes.

'Ocean's Thirteen' Headed to Blu-ray, HD DVD

The con is on: Warner Home Video has announced it will bring the blockbuster 'Ocean's Thirteen' to Blu-ray and HD DVD this Thanksgiving.

The third (and reportedly final) entry in the star-studded caper franchise from director Steven Soderbergh, 'Ocean's Thirteen' will hit both next-gen formats day-and-date with the standard-def DVD version November 13.

Tech specs are not yet available, but supplements are set to include the newly-produced 44-minute making-of documentary "Masters of the Heist," plus two featurettes "Vegas: An Opulent Illusion" and "Jerry Weintraub Walk and Talk."

Apparently, the bidders on that item don't believe in the saying "patience is virtue" :o . Or they could've just buy/rent it on dvd if they were that desperate to watch it.

These types of people deserve to be exploited.  ::)

What makes this blu-ray title collectible is because of Paramount going HD DVD exclusive starting with the release of the Blaze of Glory hd dvd. All previous pre-orders for it's blu-ray version were cancelled. But it seems early pressed blu-ray copies still reached North American stores.

Ridley Scott Feeling Blu :D :D

Medusa Distribution, an Italian film distributor and exclusive HD DVD supporter, will release 'Kingdom of Heaven' as their first Blu-ray title. The move comes after the film's director, Ridley Scott, insisted that they release the title on Blu-ray. The acclaimed director joins the ranks of Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola as filmmakers who insist their films get distributed on Blu-ray.

I see where you are coming from, but I personally think it's going be a collectible in the short term aspect of it atleast. Hypothetically, there are 2 scenarios I see here. Either:

1) HD-DVD will win out in the end and most won't even really care if you have a blu ray Blades of Glory. Even if it is a collectible, it still is on the losing format so the average joe will just disregard it and say "wow that's cool, not really  ::)"

or

2) Blu-Ray will win in the end and Paramount will re-release BoG on Blu Ray anyways. Just my opinion, but by that time, who's going to be proud of saying, "I paid $200 for my copy of Blades of Glory" when everybody else can have it for $20 and possibly with even more added features to it. Regardless, someone is going to seem foolish and it's not going to be the consumer who waited.

Finally, Blades of Glory was a good movie(bought it on DVD), but paying $200 for it is overkill. But then again, it's there money so as long as they're sure of their decision, more power to them :D

Die Hard  Box set and Live Free details (Blu-Ray)

Fox Home Entertainment has released full specs for its highly-anticipated Blu-ray releases of the 'Die Hard' franchise, but fans looking forward to an unrated high-def version of 'Live Free or Die Hard' are in for a disappointment.

As we first reported last week, Fox plans to bring 'Live Free or Die Hard' to Blu-ray on November 20, day-and-date with three standard-def DVD editions.

On that same day, the studio will also release a first-ever Blu-ray box set version of 'The Die Hard Trilogy,' containing the first three films in the series, 'Die Hard,' 'Die Hard 2: Die Harder' and 'Die Hard with a Vengeance'.

As if that wasn't exciting enough, the original announcement for 'Live Free or Die Hard' last week stated that the film would hit Blu-ray in an unrated cut of the movie, featuring additional footage not seen in the PG-13 theatrical cut. In fact, the announcement was posted on Fox's promotional web site (www.foxbd.com) alongside box art that also indicated an unrated Blu-ray edition of the film.

Alas, we've now received the full press release for 'Live Free or Die Hard' from Fox, and despite earlier indications, it seems that although two (of the three) DVD editions will include the unrated edition, the Blu-ray will contain the PG-13 version of the film only. When asked about the discrepancy with the box art displayed on their own web site, the studio told us that the "unrated" box art is inaccurate, and that revised artwork will be revealed in the coming days.

A screenshot of the 'Live Free or Die Hard' box art from the www.foxbd.com website. Fox says revised artwork will be unveiled shortly.

On the bright side, the just-released specs promise an otherwise full-featured Blu-ray release for the fourth film in the franchise, boasting each of the two-disc standard-def DVD's supplements, plus at least one Blu-ray exclusive. Among the bonus features are an audio commentary with Bruce Willis, director Len Wiseman and editor Nicolas De Toth, the ten-part documentary " Analog Hero in a Digital World: Making of Live Free or Die Hard," a 25-minute conversation with Willis and filmmaker Kevin Smith, an additional featurette, a music video (with its own making-of) and the theatrical trailer.

The Blu-ray will also include the BD-Java interactive game "Black Hat Intercept," exclusive to the high-def release.

Tech specs include a BD-50 dual-layer disc featuring 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track, and D-Box enhancement.

Similarly, each of the film's in 'The Die Hard Trilogy,' will receive the BD-50 treatment with 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio.

Supplements will mirror those found on the previous standard-def versions, including multiple audio commentaries, featurettes, storyboard comparisons and multiple trailers and TV spots.

As previously reported, the list price for 'Live Free or Die Hard' is $39.98, while 'The Die Hard Trilogy' will retail for $99.98.

Fox currently has no plans to release the first three 'Die Hard' films separately, nor will there be a four-pack continuing both 'Live Free or Die Hard' and 'The Die Hard Trilogy.'

$650+ Million Smash Hit from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures Rolls out on DVD and HD DVD October 16 in Two-Disc Sets Bursting with a Universe of Bonus Features to Immerse Fans of All Ages in the World of the Legendary ROBOTS IN DISGUISE

HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The armies of CYBERTRON invaded theaters with a juggernaut fury that shook the summer of 2007, but on October 16, 2007 fans of all ages will discover that there is far “More Than Meets The Eye” to the massive mechanical behemoths when TRANSFORMERS arrives on Earth in spectacular DVD and HD DVD two-disc Special Edition sets as well as on a single disc from DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures; distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Earning over $650 million at the global box office to date, the massive production exploded onto screens from the creative minds of director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg, in association with Hasbro, taking audiences by storm and becoming the biggest original film of the year. The first live-action film based on the enduringly popular “robots in disguise”, TRANSFORMERS features the ultimate battle between good and evil, as the peace-loving AUTOBOTS seek to protect humanity from the evil forces of the DECEPTICONS. The action-packed film stars a hot young cast of up-and-coming actors including Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia), Josh Duhamel (“Las Vegas”), Tyrese Gibson (Four Brothers) and Megan Fox (“Hope & Faith”), as well as seasoned performers such as Jon Voight (National Treasure) and John Turturro (The Good Shepherd). But the biggest stars are the TRANSFORMERS robots themselves – including fan favorites OPTIMUS PRIME, MEGATRON, BUMBLEBEE, RATCHET, JAZZ and more – brought to life by revolutionary new VFX techniques developed by the innovative digital wizards at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM).

The TRANSFORMERS Special Edition two-disc sets provide an incredible experience with an arsenal of bonus material that delivers excitement and fun for long-time fans, as well as for viewers who are new to the TRANSFORMERS universe. The extensive special features include commentary by Michael Bay and two multi-part in-depth documentaries exploring the human elements of the film as well as the phenomenal robot stars. Presented in multiple parts, “Our World” and “Their War” include segments with Steven Spielberg discussing his love for the franchise and the early concept for the movie, the extensive casting process, the training, consultants and real-world weapons provided by the military to lend authenticity to the film, the evolution of the robots from Hasbro’s iconic toy line to big-screen stars, the unique vehicles created for the movie, a discussion with ILM’s legendary digital artists and much more.

The discs go even further behind-the-scenes with early sketch concepts of the robots and an in-depth look at the making of the SKORPONOK attack from writing and conceptualization through the creation of the stunning visual effects.

Out-Of-This World High-Def Content:

In addition to superior picture and sound and all of the above bonus material presented in high definition, the HD DVD presentation provides consumers with a host of web-enabled features, which are accessible through all connected HD DVD players. The web-enabled features take advantage of technology that allows the studio to present the content in a new way. These cutting-edge, online features can be updated, providing consumers with an evolving entertainment experience months, or even years, after the disc is physically produced. Initial features include a TRANSFORMERS Intelligence Mode in which an on-screen dashboard over the film provides information about the robots and weapons, their strength levels, character updates and more. Plus, a GPS Locator that can access a map and GPS coordinates. Paramount’s TRANSFORMERS HD DVD connectivity capabilities will reveal additional HD DVD exclusive features at street date and at various time periods in the future.

The HD DVD also includes a TRANSFORMERS H.U.D. (Heads Up Display) that lets viewers access running text commentary while watching the film and even view relevant behind-the-scenes footage in a picture-in-picture window. Additionally, viewers can explore the main robots’ individual details in high definition with the TRANSFORMERS Tech Inspector.

a $650M blockbuster and they can't even add a lossless track to go with it! shame!!!! pardon me but in my opinion Paramount should have stayed neutral. they were starting to add lossless or uncompressed PCM tracks to their BD releases na before they went exclusive. clearly even w/ hd dvd having more complete specifications, capacity is an issue in authoring hi definition content.

I beg to disagree, its more of a time issue and the studio in general. At the current state of things, had Paramount stayed neutral the Blu Ray version will not contain the same interactive features but might include LPCM to compensate.

This is not to say that I am not disappointed though. If Warner can offer TrueHD with relatively lengthy movies like Troy I don't see a reason why other studios cant do the same. The dd+ soundtrack at 1.5mbps though would still sound great but there will be that nagging feeling for me on how it would sound on TrueHD.

Now, had the Blu Ray group started with complete specs then the choice would have been easy. No excuse for space constraints (which I still have reservations), no worries if future titles will play with all features enabled. If only this were the case.

A lossless audio soundtrack would have been dandy and great to have, but still this is early great news for highdef fans.  I dont think Ill stay away from this one just because it doesnt have a lossless soundtrack.  The sound design of Transformers will make sure the DD+ soundtrack will be no slouch.   Non-inclusion of TrueHD though will leave you wondering, just like John have mentioned........but for me, it will not take away the anticipation of getting a hand on this title  :o :o

As for the issue whether Paramount had HD DVD space issues with this title or not, or it simply has time issues, we will not know for the moment and we will all purely speculate.   Paramount's reason for going HD DVD has already been stated, and its time to see how highly anticipated releases like this affect the ongoings on this format war.

Im pretty sure some BD only fans are already thinking going neutral.....eyeing some $250 Tosh players.....just like the same effect on me when I just have to get a PS3 to watch those BD exclusives.

Why, have you tried audibly distinguishing between lossless LPCM and high bitrate compressed audio?  Most pundits on AV forums can't, at home or on double blind tests.   It's purely psychology when you know its lossless that you think it's superior.  But it's not.  Because psychoaccoustics work. There's also such a thing as lossless compression.   And especially in movies where your focus is divided between video and audio. LPCM offers no real sonic advantage over compressed audio at high bitrate.  Just imagined advantage.   It's the bitrate that matters. LPCM in high def disc is a wasteful unnecessary use of disc space.

LPCM is a 25+ year old technology that started with CDs.  Blu ray is talking through its teeth when it promised NEXT Generation video and audio technologies when it fact it used a decades old MPEG2 technology coupled with a wasteful LPCM audio track when it launched it disappointing Fifth Element.  What's so next gen about that.  That's why I always had a poor opinion of Blu Ray.  Had it not been for HD DVD, the early adopters would have swallowed mpeg2 and LPCM hook line and stinker and would never have known that a more effcient VC1 video transfer and DD+/DolbyTrueHD and DTS-HD can do the job just as well if not better on a lower capacity medium.

And no,  with 30Gb using straight VC-1 and lossless compression audio codecs, capacity is never an issue in high definition for HD DVD.  But IT IS an issue for blu ray if they use inefficient MPEG2 video codec and wasteful LPCM audio.  And don't give me that BS that Toshiba is coming out with a 51gb triple layer disc to prove it is an issue.  Wrong again.  Toshiba did it just to match BD and to show it can be done if the time comes when 5 hour movies become the norm.

Agree! We should be rejoicing na that we're getting this in HD DVD. Poor BD fanboys... ;D Just treat that TrueHD is the icing of the cake! As long as we get to eat the main delicious & yummy cake...we are a bunch of happy bee... :P

As for the VQ I'm expecting at least a 4.5-star rating & no less to do justice for this movie!!  ;D

There's also such a thing as lossless compression.   And especially in movies where your focus is divided between video and audio. LPCM offers no real sonic advantage over compressed audio at high bitrate.  Just imagined advantage.   It's the bitrate that matters. LPCM in high def disc is a wasteful unnecessary use of disc space.

would i comment on the lossless track if id didn't think it made it difference? i was also a pessimist before that lossless tracks don't make a difference but it does. i've tried it in my setup and i did hear a difference. have you compared lossless audio vs compressed in your system? if not how can you say there's no difference? don't just parrot what you read from other forums because for every one poster that says they can't hear a difference there are 5 who says otherwise. if you don't have first hand experience then just don't comment.

Toshiba did it just to match BD and to show it can be done if the time comes when 5 hour movies become the norm.

what's wrong with using LPCM? its uncompressed audio. it's bit for bit identical w/ the original master. Mpeg-2 can be as good looking as VC-1. a number of movies encoded in mpeg-2 are in the top tiers in terms of PQ. Granted that TFE isn't one of the best looking BD's out there but it still looks a helluva lot better than DVD. Sony also released a remastered version that has TruHD and PCM and its one of the best looking movies out there right now.

if HD DVD really doesn't have a space issue then why didn't they even add a lossless track to Transformers? and Transformers isn't the only movie that Paramount has given a watered down version. Blades of Glory BD would have had( or should i say has?) a PCM track and HD DVD only has DD 5.1. the HD DVD version of Face Off will have less extras than the BD version would have.

PQ is only 50% of the HD/HT experience. the other 50% is AQ. I'm not a fanboy and i don't mindlessly support Bluray. i know BD has its faults but it also has its strengths. All i want is the best PQ & AQ i can get

I don't think you are talking to a early adopter. Funny about the parrot thing :D :D Those HD DVD fanboys used to laugh at BDs when they come out lacking in Audio options, especially those from Paramount(Happy Feet) . Now here comes an anticipated HD DVD from Paramount now lacking in Audio Options and now they say "SO WHAT?!?"

Here's the scoop on Toshiba CEDIA Press Conference

Nope, this is not  from beatboy :D :D

AVSforum

The theme was Star Trek and the presenters were dressed in Star Trek outfits and the stage was set with Star Trek decorations. The first presentation was all about their new LCD panels, however, I'll just discuss the HD DVD side of the presentation here.

Here's the list of the new news.

1. All Gen 3 players will be packed with Born Identity and 300. All ValueElectronics.com Gen 3 advance orders qualify for the two additional titles packed with the players.

2. Buy a HD DVD player and the Star Trek box set and their is a mail-in rebate for a Star Trek HD DVD phaser remote control unit, very cool looking and sound effects. All ValueElectronics.com pre-orders are eligible.

3. The 5 free HD DVD movies will be extended till 2/28/08 and new titles are added to the selection. xBox and notebook PC with HD DVD drives will qualify for the 5 free HD DVD movie offer.

4. Just considering Warner, Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks and Dreamworks Animation more than 125 new titles will be release by the end of '07.

5. Shinco, Ventura, Alpine, Onkyo and Integra and the 3 new Gen 3 HD DVD players will all ship by early Q4 '07.

6. Total HD DVD player unit sales are expected to reach more than 30 million stand alone units by the end of ‘07.

Quote
30 million stand alones in '07 is insane!!!

7. Amazon and ValueEletronics.com report the A2 is the #1 best seller.

8. According to NPD data, BD stand alone players have 16% market share, HD DVD enjoys a 33% market share, while SD DVD holds 51%.

Quote
Again, can we get a double check on this one? It's obviously incorrect because it implies there are nearly as many HDM stand alones in the market as SD DVD players.

9. All studios are going to expand the connectivity features, like on the Star Trek HD DVD you can connect to CBS's server and get a tour of the Star Ship Enterprise.

10. All Toshiba products are Earth friendly and will carry the "Earth Protection" logo on their packaging. There is a long list of things Toshiba has developed to ensure their Earth friendly compliance.

I think they're talking worldwide and they're anticipating that many fence sitters will jump the gun once all the existing hardware/players will be reduced (in price) when the 3rd Gen players rolls-out in the coming weeks. Couple this with the HD DVD release of Transformers and other titles to be announced soon.  ;D

But yeah, 30M units is a lot in less than 4 months..  :o

Here's interesting news on both Bluray and HD-DVD at the Cedia Show

Toshiba Pushing Freebies to Lure HD DVD Buyers
By Mark Hachman

DENVER -- Want a pair of free HD DVD movies? How about five more? Will you take a branded Star Trek remote control?

In an attempt to sway undecided next-generation DVD buyers, Toshiba said Wednesday that it will continue offering free DVDs in an attempt to lock in consumers to its HD DVD format -- and increase the number of HD DVDs "sold" to consumers.

Toshiba also announced several next-generation HD DVD players, as did Sony. Sony, however, one-upped its competition by announcing the HES-V1000 media server, which contains both a hard drive for ripping media as well as a 200-disc Blu-ray disc changer.

Both companies are engaged in a heated dogfight for market share. Although neither company is going it alone, both Sony and Toshiba have been the champions of their respective camps. Behind the scenes, both companies are also lobbying movie studios to sign exclusive deals.

The Blu-ray disc format is generally considered to be the highest-selling format where the discs are concerned, picking up steam early in the year. According to Chris Fawcett, vice president of video marketing for the home division of Sony, who said he was quoting numbers from Nielsen Media Research, sales of Blu-ray discs were more than twice the number of HD DVD discs sold, or about 1.7 million.

"Three months later [after a June event, where Fawcett spoke] I'm even more confident," Fawcett said at a press conference held at the CEDIA trade show here. "The question is not if Blu-ray will win the format war, but when."

Fawcett cited a number of exclusives, including Target, the second largest retailer in the U.S., which will only offer Blu-ray hardware during the holidays, he said. He said recent NPD sales data showed that Blu-ray players were outselling HD DVD players as well, by about 300,000 units.

At Toshiba, the company preferred to emphasize that consumers intended to choose the HD DVD format. Jodi Sally, vice president of marketing for the Digital AV department at Toshiba cited a survey conducted by researcher NPD, which claimed that consumers were twice as likely to buy HD DVDs, by 33 percent to 16 percent. Unfortunately, an even 50 percent said they either intended to wait or were undecided, the survey found.

"HD DVD continues to boldly go where no format has gone before," Sally said.

That was a reference to geek fan favorite Star Trek, whose first season will be exclusively released on HD DVD, Sally said. If a consumer buys the first season Trek boxed set -- to be released on Nov. 20 for an undisclosed price -- as well as a Toshiba HD DVD player, Toshiba and CBS Home Entertainment will throw in a free remote control, shaped like a Star Trek phaser. The remote will operate any Toshiba DVD player, Sally said.

Toshiba didn't stop there. For every third-generation HD DVD player a consumer buys, the company will include an HD DVD copy of 300 and The Bourne Identity right in the box, Sally said. Moreover, from Oct. 1 through Feb. 28, 2008, Toshiba will give consumers the option to redeem five free HD DVDs, available via its Web site.

The free DVDs are significant, given that Nielsen Media factored in a similar Blu-ray promotion into its own sales tallies.

Toshiba plans three next-generation players: the HD-A3 ($299.99, available in Oct.); the HD-A30 ($399.99, available this month); and the HD-A35 ($499.99, available in October). The HD-A3 outputs up to 1080i, while the HD-A30 and A-35 can handle 1080p content. The A-35 includes support for "deep color," enabling dynamic color ranges beyond what the human eye can see. Both of the latter two models also include the HDMI-CEC or CE-Link capability, which allows the HD DVD player to control a Toshiba TV. Sally said that a user would simply have to press "play" on the HD DVD controller, and the TV would turn on as well.

Furthermore, Toshiba said it would issue a firmware update via Ethernet to its existing HD-XA2 and HD-A20 models, enabling them to process 1080p content at 24 frames per second.
Sony, meanwhile, announced two new players: the top-of-the-line BDP-S2000ES model, as well as the new BDP-S500. The new BDP-S2000ES and BDP-S500 players will be available this fall for about $1,300 and $700, respectively, Sony said.

Both players include support for full high-definition 1080/60p and 24p output, as well as 7.1 channel linear PCM and Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and dts-HD High Resolution Audio bitstream output via HDMI 1.3. The BDP-S2000ES is apparently more rigidly constructed, with a dual-shield construction that prevents dust from collecting on the BD drive, and a rigid drive bracket to minimize vibration. The player also sports a rigid beam chassis that reduces internal vibration, improving playback, Sony said.

Acer Joins HD DVD Promotional Group

Although reports from last week's IFA tradefair appeared to indicate that Taiwanese computer manufacturer Acer favored Blu-ray of HD DVD, a new press release puts them squarely in the dual-format camp.

When Acer announced last week that it had joined the Blu-ray Disc Association, it was widely assumed that the world's No. 4 PC vendor was now squarely in the Blu-ray corner.
