Can I play widescreen movies without the black bars at the top and bottom? Nakalagay sa mga cases ng DVDs na 16:9 sya, but when I played the movies, meron pa rin black bars.

Your question was already answered by streetsmart on page 13 of this thread.

Here is the explanation again..

Widescreen movies are recorded in the same aspect ratio of the original film, which can vary from 1.85:1 to 2.35:1. The widescreen aspect ratio of your panasonic 42PV70 16:9 TV is approximately 1.85:1. Dvd movies in 16:9 with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 are the only ones that will fit your TV screen!

Therefore, any movie with a widescreen aspect ratio greater than 1.85:1 will have a letterbox effect and wont fill the entire screen of your 42pv70 16:9 television. That is why some dvds will fill your screen and some would still produce black bars on top and bottom. This is normal depending on the aspect ratio of the movie you are watching.

Finally saw a 42PY700 side by side with a 42PV700.  On the material they were playing it was hard to tell the difference resolution-wise.  The only obvious difference was the PV was brighter.  It could be just the settings but the same was true with the 50PY700. The sales guy says this is because the PY has an anti-glare coating.  Hmm I wonder  ::).  Also saw the Pioneer Kuros in action. Nice and not so expensive either.

The PY700 and the PV700 has the same anti glare function. and diff lang nila is 1920 x 1080p yung isa. ;)
a liitle bit on the detail side yung PY700.

I tried to use the 42PV70 as a PC monitor for my laptop to play some downloaded movies. I set it at its native resolution of 1024x768. But when I played the movie using Windows Media Player, the movie is stretched horizontally even though the movie is in widescreen already. I tried to change the resolution, but to no avail. Is there anything that can be done with this?

Its a coat on top of the glass actually.  It could be they used a different coat on the PY.

Purchased my Panasonic 42 set at Sights and Sounds last week.  A very good deal for a very good TV.  Together with my HD-DVD Player, dvds and HDs look grand!  What I notice in my visits to multiple stores is that the Plasma/LCD settings of TVs on display are most always set to Dynamic, w/c certainly make the move look crisper and brighter for display purposes.  Thus, when you look at this set compared with the high end and much more expensive sets, certainly the more expensive sets look better.  But for home use, I actually dial it down to standard settings only as the high contrast setting seem a bit too much!  For as long as you don't have multiple sets at home on display at the same time, you don't really need a better set than this.  I'd say this is about as good for the price right now in the Philippines, considering that these same sets still sell for P120k at SM and other stores.   Of course if you're in the US of A, prices have fallen down considerably so thats a different matter. For the here and now, two thumbs up!

Thanks to Sights and Sounds' Boss Vic and Paul for the sale, and Elly for the installation.  I esp. like that Sights and Sounds has a 3 year after sales assistance program. I certainly would recommend buying from Sights and Sounds!  Here's to many years of watching great movies with my Pana!

Thanks and congrats sa purchase.  Btw, we still has to provide you a FREE one-time Spyder Colorimeter picture calibration.  The Spyder calibration is a scientific way of setting up the picture contrast, brightness, sharp, color, tint, and picture temperature. The calibration shall dramatically improve your plasma picture performance.

However, before we can do the calibration, we suggest you finish your 100 hours break-in period.  After you had done with the break-in, please do call us up for Spyder calibration.  I will assign Paul to do the calibration for you.

Again, thank you for being a valued client. And, thank you also for a nice complement posted here.

Same thing happened to me. Check if ur windows media player settings permit u to select aspect ratio. If not, then use a different player with options for changing the aspect ratio, then once ur there select 16:9 widescreen. You can download assorted media players for your pc from the internet.

Hi to all Plasma owners,

I read that older generation Plasma suffer from glare problems. Is it still true for newer generation?  Please advice.  Thanks.
