Not an Alpha, but a former top tier FS of Anthony: the Omega FS. (so this will be a sort of deja vu or maybe just a very delayed review
)
I was able to score a bargain for a used stock Omega FS. According to the DIY master himself, the price I paid for it just covered the price of the box.
But anyway, upon delivery to the office, I immediately connected it to a Harman Kardon amp I had previously been using to power another A-Audio masterpiece (HB40). I then spent the bigger part of the morning and the whole afternoon of today just listening to familiar tracks. Upon arriving home in the evening, I then listened to my precious HB40s for comparison.
My impressions:
- The Omega floorstanders have a harder quality to their sound. This quality lends itself to a nice reproduction of instruments like guitars and pianos, however in voices, this marble-like shimmer can become unpleasant especially in long listening sessions. In contrast, in the HB40s voices are very natural and open. In addition, the HB40s have a characteristic that my friend and I describe as a golden tone. It's as if the sound produced has golden luster to it. I still count myself very lucky to have bought these speakers.
- Going back to the Omega floorstanders, the bass is ample. So if you want the sound to be unmuddied by the bass it's better to position them at sufficient distances from walls.
- But the quality of the sound of the Omegas is apparent from the first listen. The detail is there, the power is there, the bass.. I just feel they are not speakers one can listen hours upon hours to.
