Dex,

Bad news binili agad ni Compaq ang Scott. Velodyne nalang but you can get Scott from Hyperaudio. He has 4 units available. He is selling one for 30T.

why not look into the wiredstate preamp for only $150 -- includes premium parts and NOS tubes...this one beats preamps costing much more...and you get to support our very own...

Hey Levi! Pareho pala amp natin, congrats on the new ST70 its nice and sarap paglaruan ng different tubes to get the sound u like. U won't regret it. Got mine from Hyperaudio too  ;D. I tried Svetlana's on mine, got more definition on the soundstage and musical instruments.

As to pre-amp why not try the Foreplay from Hyperaudio? Using one with my ST70 and its a nice little pre-amp. Also very simple 2 inputs / 2 outputs. U need a phono amp if u want to use a turntable.

E-mail me if u want more details. Enjoy the your new Amp bro  :)

Nice bumping into you here, this is 4jx1 too. Later

i have posted this note from Doc B. (designer of Foreplay) at wiredstate.com for the info of the local audiophile community.   what hypertriode is selling is a tube-rectified cathode follower preamp, similar but not exactly the foreplay.  sale of foreplay is "unauthorized" unless you got it from bottlehead.com

"Of course not, not if the intention is to sell them. But of course some folks don't recognize the way they are demeaning themselves when they do something like that, nor do they consider that they are just begging for a lawsuit. A more fundamental question might be, why would anyone want to buy something from a person who has so little experience or creativity that they can't conceive their own designs and come up with a name for them?

Cripes, if one is going to make a knockoff to sell, make a knockoff of an $87K Ongaku, not a $149 Foreplay. A voltage amp direct coupled to a cathode follower is not exactly new or unique. So there's no need to call it our product if it isn't, aside from taking advantage of our product's reputation in misrepresenting what they are selling."

Compared to the Pas3 what can you say?

i had 2 pas3 and 2 pas2 preamps.  they are all gone or modified inside.

stock pas3 are colored preamps, nice tubey sound, but lacks detail, are rolled off on highs, mushy bass and a bit noisy.

the ws preamp is much cleaner, dynamic, musical... subjectively, some folks find it similar to if not better than the stock foreplay.

for more info, go to wiredstate.com and visit projects.  or join the planned listening sessions (one just concluded last sunday)

If that is the case then i have to check on that foreplay or the WS preamp. What is the advantage of tube linestage preamp with my existing passive attenuator from Hyper aside from the number of inputs? What do you mean by dynamic? I notice with the passive attenuator, you have to listen at a loud volume to hear all the details but kinda lacking on soft listening. Can I eliminate that problem if I use a preamp? Thanks

Hi V_D, just a query, if the PAS-2/3/3x and ST70 was a true match when both are stock, would a Rivo or Curcio or any other mod ST70 still be a match with a stock PAS or is there an upgrade path for the PAS to keep up with a modded ST70?

The question is academic actually since I'm eagerly awaiting my WS preamp.

stock pas and st70 are over 40 years old...some stock capacitors are leaky, resistors are offspecs, etc...sound could be tubey and rolled-off (at least that is what i experienced with my stock gear)...now a fully restored st70 (i had 3 with several boards) will sound very different...more open and extended, and with higher capacitance will sound modern yet musical...personally i prefer a modded st70 paired with  a DIY preamp...again a matter of personal taste.  some would like the restored/upgraded pas over a foreplay.  some have been extremely happy with stock but st70 paired with a modern preamp.

I try my best to enjoy my amp every little chance I get and the more I listen, the better it gets. Parang Im losing interest with the preamp. I think I will enjoy the passive attenuator muna.

i have a passive preamp too and with the right amp+speaker combination, you may be able to live with them happily ever after.

so, let your ears decide what you like and enjoy...

I agree with Francis. What you have there is a Rivo'd ST70 so that's already a very good start.

What is the present tube complement? I find the Svet El34's smoother, more refined & more balanced overall than Sovteks. RCA 7199 Blackplates will bring it up another level.

Mullard EL34's will give you the best mids but they're expensive.

Get to know the sound of your St70 with the passive for a few months and upgrade your pre if necessary. I presently have a DIY passive and a DIY tube rectified 12au7 preamp for my restored ST70.

Some people prefer hooking up the St70 to a modern active preamp give it a more modern, dynamic edge.

Others prefer the air and tubey presentation of a PAS2 or other vintage preamps.

Take your pick.  ;)

Levi's ST70 has Svet EL34's (the best new-prod), Sylvania 7199's (not as airy as the RCA's but more dynamic at best) and Jap 5AR4 good-sounding but not as what mozilla said not the captivating midrange the Mullards are sought for. Dami namang projects Levi, bili na!
The passive preamp i made for his  ST70 complements it. Dynamic, detailed (not the usual adjectives for passives) while retaining the soundstage width and depth passives are very good at and he doesn't have to worry about long interconnects (a taboo for passives), the preamp is connected directly to the ST70's front RCA jacks. As long as you have speakers sensitive enough, passives are the next best thing to a straight wire with gain IMO/IME.
Next: my take on the Dyna Pas 2/3...

I've heard Rene's and they're good - just as he describes them.

Bai, I'ts good to hear that you've designed them to attach directly to the ST70's input jacks. Ok yan, less stuff on the signal path.

Yes Moz; buti na lang nasa harap ang input jacks ng Stereo 70 otherwise it (direct connection of passive pre)would be very incovenient. BTW, this set-up of the ST 70's input jacks on the front (tho many will nitpick on this) is one of reasons why this amp sounds so good.

Anong attenuator gamit (Alps, Dact, etc)?

Im upgrading first to Mullard rectifier before I decide for a preamp. I will also take some pictures of your passive preamp-ST70
