Electronics Shows
« on: Jan 04, 2008 at 02:00 PM »
In order to keep track of the very latest display tech, we should have a separate thread for easy reference.

How about a thread for electronics shows?  We can check it out when we want to keep up to date with the latest and the greatest.

=======================================================

Next major show will be at CES 2008, scheduled on Jan. 7-10 in Vegas.

The latest buzz is the world's thinnest plasma TV, by Pioneer.  It's rumored that the new TV will be unveiled at this year's CES.

No details yet.  But there's a leaked video posted on youtube (15 secs., no sound):

Panasonic Rolling Out 150-Inch Plasma at CES
Wed Jan 2, 2008 2:10PM EST

It's about to become the worst-kept secret of next week's CES: Panasonic is rolling out an unthinkably large, 150-inch plasma television (yes, a plasma), massively eclipsing the current size leader, a 108-inch LCD from Sharp that was unveiled at CES last year.

Philips WOWvx ---- 3D images without need for 3D glasses.

... some stuff worked great, even with the ‘look around’ effect that I thought would turn blurry. It did not, and the gaming and Sci-Fi scenes were impressive. (Though the 2D pics here don't do it justice.)

1920 x 1080 plasma?  Ang baba naman ng resolution.  Wala yan sa lolo ko  8)

How about a 4096 x 2160, 150-inch plasma?   :o :o :o

Not high definition --- they call it "Advanced High Definition".  Your Blu-ray player needs an upscaler  :D

Panasonic 150-inch plasma: 4k definition is here

It wasn't much of a surprise when Panasonic announced its 150-inch plasma at its keynote press conference.  We'd been hearing rumours about it for some time ... . Still, Panasonic must have been laughing at the rumours, because no one actually managed to guess the little surprise it had up its sleeve.

And what a surprise it was, because it turns out that not only was the Panasonic massive -- it certainly makes the 103-inch model look weedy -- but it is also a 4k-resolution screen.

Sony delivers the first 240Hz LCDs November 10

Sure Samsung had 240Hz (and wavier hair) first, but with its TVs stuck in development until 2011, Sony's back with another first / best of the night in the W1 series display, packing four times the speed of previous LCD HDTVs, and double that of the new 120Hz your best friend just picked up. Allegedly smoother than Billy Dee Williams cracking open a Colt 45 in Cloud City, the KDL-46W1 and KDL-40W1 bring 1080p with a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, BRAVIA Engine 2 image processing, 24p support and an assortment of hookups from modem to HDMI. Stop by your nearest Japanese electronics shop November 10 to get a peep at these and their slim, sexy sister, but bring ¥400,000 ($3,652 U.S.) for the 46-inch or ¥290,0000 ($2,648 U.S.) for the 40-inch -- you could try showing up without it, but why take chances?

CES: Panasonic Unveils 54-inch Diagonal 1-inch Thick Z1 Plasma HDTV (TC-P54Z1)
By Chris Boylan
Published: 2009-01-08 - 07:13:06

At CES in Las Vegas this week, Panasonic introduced a new flagship model in their 1080p full high definition plasma HDTV line: the TC-P54Z1 plasma HDTV. The new set measures in at 54 inches diagonally but only one inch thick. To simplify the installation and eliminate the need to hide wires behind the TV, the set's high definition digital tuner and connectivity pack (HDMI inputs, network connection, etc.) are included on a separate tuner component that broadcasts the full HD 1080p picture to the set wirelessly without any loss of resolution.

Definitely prototypes only.  No market date, no price.  I'm sure it will market eventually, but as of now, no word yet.

IFA and 3D Wars: Blu-Ray is Once Again Obsolete
By Rob Enderle, principal analyst, Enderle Group
Thursday, September 03, 2009 11:53

IFA is the big consumer electronics conference in Europe and it is vastly better timed than CES coming before the holiday season so you can get excited about stuff to buy rather than right after when you are trying to hide from your credit card bill.

There is a lot of cool stuff here at the show but something that immediately jumped out at me was that Panasonic and Sony were effectively announcing both the obsolescence of existing Blu-Ray and HD TV products but a new format war this time for 3D.   The 3D demonstrations were hot but having two large vendors once again not in agreement as to which one will be adopted brings back bad memory of other format wars and I want to hide under my desk.  This won’t show up until late 2010 and both vendors are showing both Movie and Gaming 3D content.

The Two Formats

Based on what both vendors showcased it appears that Sony is going the Dolby Real 3D route that uses polarized glasses and is most common in the best 3D theaters at the moment. Panasonic is using active shutter glasses which is a vastly more complex, but often better looking, alternative that requires much more expensive glasses and isn’t common in theaters.    The active glasses approach does results in a better overall picture but the glasses have to be powered they have to receive a signal in order to synchronize their shutters and the glasses tend to be comparatively expensive.

The Polarized approach is vastly easier and less expensive to do but screen angle can be a problem and the result generally isn’t as realistic (at least not to my eye).    In short the Sony approach is more affordable and the Panasonic is more interesting technically.  Both technologies have come a long way and after watching both demos I think I would be personally very happy with either.

Skype HD from LG and Panasonic:

"Soon you will have something new to watch on the living room TV: your relatives and friends from around the globe."
http://techie-buzz.com/gadgets-news/skype-soon-coming-to-tv-sets.html

"Skype chose CES 2010 to detail partnerships with both LG and Panasonic to offer Skype-enabled HD TVs. Under the plans, Skype software is set to be embedded into the 2010 range of Panasonic Viera Cast HD TVs and 26 new LCD and plasma TVs from LG that feature NetCast Entertainment Access. Pricing of these new TVs is yet to be confirmed, but they are expected to become available to buy in mid-2010.

LG and Panasonic will also offer HD webcams, optimised for Skype video calls, that can be plugged into the compatible TVs. Skype claims that these HD webcams will 'include special microphones and optics that can pick up sound and video from a couch-distance'."

The Curse of 3D TV
Tech makers think three dimensions are the next big thing after HD. God, I hope not.
By Harry McCracken  |  Posted at 5:10 pm on Friday, September 3, 2010

... Perversely, the 3D showings of live events at the show, such as Sony’s press conference, served mostly as a useful reminder of how artificial this “3D” is. In person, Sir Howard and Lang Lang looked like people; on the 3D screen, the versions on the jumbo 3D screen resembled humongous puppets.

As a medium, 3D remains remarkably self-trivializing. Virtually nobody who works with it can resist thrusting stuff at the camera, just to make clear to viewers that they’re experiencing the miracle of the third dimension. When Lang Lang banged away at his piano during Sony’s event, a cameraman zoomed in and out on the musical instrument for no apparent reason, and one of the company’s representatives kept robotically shoving his hands forward. Hey, it’s 3D–watch this!

Now, new technologies are certainly allowed to call attention to themselves. (1927′s The Jazz Singer, the first popular talkie, is mostly a silent film–except when Al Jolson breaks out in song.) But 3D isn’t new. It’s existed for sixty years in one form or another. And almost all of it is still merely a needy, attention-grabbing novelty, barely more dignified than Smell-O-Vision. ...
