Cinemalaya Bente will open up the festival with 'THE GOSPEL OF THE BEAST' directed by Sheron Dayoc.

After its world premiere in the main competition of the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival in 2023, this award-winning film has taken the world by storm, racking up awards such as Best Film at the Ho Chi Minh International Film Festival and the Bali International Film Festival, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Best Editing at the 2024 Gawad Urian (Philippine Critics Award).

A perfect film to start the festival by showing the strength of Filipino indie films and depth of Filipino filmmakers. Do not miss out THE GOSPEL OF THE BEAST on August 2, 2024 at AyalaMalls Manila Bay, Greenbelt, Trinoma, UP Town Center, and Market Market.

Makasaysayan ang pagbabalik ng masterpiece na ito sa silver screen na gawa ng dalawang National Artists for Film and Broadcast Arts na sina Lino Brocka at Nora Aunor. The newly restored 4k version na inyong mapapanood ay courtesy of Carlotta Films and Kani Releasing.

Earlier this year, the restoration of this 1980 film made its international premiere at the Festival de Cannes. This film won the Best Actress award for Nora Aunor at the Gawad Urian in 1981.

Tumandok is the film I am primarily interested to catch at Cinemalaya 2024.....

TUMANDOK PRIMER: Bakit ka dapat manuod ng pelikulang ito?

https://youtu.be/ZzBrjbulzOU?si=QoEVR9DYyYJkGJ22

Tama, mahal ang sine ngayon! But if you have the chance to buy one for Cinemalaya XX, we hope you pick TUMANDOK. This simple and raw film features non-professional Ati actors speaking in their native language, Inati. TUMANDOK is special and necessary because a portion of the proceeds from its screenings will go directly to the Ati community of Sitio Kabarangkalan in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo, to help fund the process of their ancestral domain title.

By watching TUMANDOK, you are not only experiencing a rare film by the Atis of Western Visayas but also supporting an indigenous community in their fight to save their homes. Ito ang paaawer ng Cinemalaya. Film is more than art; it can make a real difference for people who are often overlooked.

Here’s the schedule:

08/03 (SAT) | UP Town Center | Greenbelt | 5 PM
08/04 (SUN) | Manila Bay 2, 8, 9, 10 (GALA) | 8:30 PM
08/05 (MON) | Trinoma | Market Market | 5 PM
08/06 (TUE) | UP Town Center (TALKBACK) | Greenbelt | 5 PM
08/07 (WED) | Trinoma | 8:30 PM
08/08 (THU) | Market Market | 11 AM
| Manila Bay 8, 10 (TALKBACK) | 5:30 PM
08/10 (SAT) | Trinoma | Market Market | 2 PM
08/11 (SUN) | UP Town Center | Greenbelt | 8:30 PM

Tumandok (2024) - Watched it yesterday at UP Town Center. A very brave and powerful film which gives a voice to the usually voiceless local indigenous people, allowing them to tell their own story using their own dialect, songs and performances. It features no heavy drama, no partial thrills or action scenes, but instead takes a semi-documentary approach in a manner that respectfully lets the Ati's narrative and plight unfold to us naturalistically. This is a compelling, important, educational and urgent call for action to support oppressed indigenous communities. It is also all aces on the filmmaking front: well directed, with remarkable but naturalistic cinematography and a lovely simple score. This particular screening was followed by an emotional Q&A with the filmmakers, the non-professional leading actress Jenaica Sangher, and the real life inspiration for the main character of En En. So far, I have not seen other films in the Cinemalaya 2024 line-up, but I think I can safely say that this one is top tier and a must watch.
