You can test this with digitized image files. Using a digital camera or a 2mpx camera cellphone, take a snapshot of an object at a higher resolution setting and one at a lower resolution setting. Upload both on your PC. Using a photo editing software. downscale the higher resolution picture down to a resolution somewhere halfway between the two. Then upscale the lower resolution image to that middleground. Then compare. Chances are the downscaled image will look better than the upscaled image.
