Panasonic 42PV8 - Bang for the Buck
« on: Jun 17, 2008 at 06:24 PM »
This unit deserves its own thread.  Panasonic 42PV8 owners, please post your feedback and comments on this thread.

The 42PV8 model was released locally almost at the same time as the 42PV80.  Unlike its predecessor, the 42PV7, the 42PV8 on paper is not inferior to the higher model 42PV80 compared to the 42PV7 and 42PV70, in terms of picture quality.  The 42PV8 and 42PV80 have the same G11 panel and picture quality related specifications – e.g. contrast ratio and others.  The only differences are as follows -

- The 42PV8 only have 2 HDMI inputs compared to 3 for the 42PV80
- The 42PV8 does not have an SD memory reader
- The 42PV8 has matte black finish on the outer panel compared to the piano black finish of the 42PV80

The 42PV70 model is probably the most popular model in this forum.  To sum it all up, we can probably say that what’s so good about the 42PV70 is it’s “Bang for the Buck” or basically its price performance.  In those terms, we can probably say that the 42PV8 model is the successor of the 42PV70 and not the 42PV80 because of its relatively more expensive price.

As it stands right now, the Panasonic 42PV8 offers the Biggest Bang for the Buck!!!

just to add:

The PV8 comes with the same slim stand without the SWIVEL FUNCTION of the PV80. ;)

how can we discuss bang for the buck when you havent even mentioned the price?

and it seems you only mean bang for the buck as only in comparison to pv80 not the entire 42 plasma models.
84" 100" 120" 150" Motorized or Manual Projector Screens still available. Just pm.

my basis was basically the 42pv70, which a lot of forum members have patronized because of that category ... the 42pv8 comes at the same price point, actually a lot lower than the initial price of the 42pv70 when it was introduced ... then when it comes to picture quality, the 42pv8 is really a significant step forward :)

is this a different pv8? Contrast ratio is 10,000:1, V-real 2 engine etc.

http://www.allianceelectric.ie/products/tv/plasmalcd/th42pv8.htm

I have a veeeeery close chance to have this, should i let go of my pv70? Have a few days to decide, though hindi ko pa talga nakikita how pv8 performs, but based on the comments, parang very tempting eh. Help please@!

contrast ratio of PV80 and PV8 are the same ...you can check out panasonic viera asia (just google it) - there's a downloadable catalog with side by side spec comparison ...the only differences are the 4 items mentioned above

i had a chance to see the PV70 and PV8 side by side at the store ...it's worth taking the PV8 considering the meager price difference with PV70

If the amount you can sell the PV70 for is right and the balance you have to pay for the PV8 is negligible, why not. But can you get a deal like that?

Also, isn't the PV8 the current equivalent of the PV7 and not the PV70?

I follow the PV threads with great interest as I purchased a 50PV70 in March, but on the upgrade itch, I decided at purchase that my next upgrade would be in size and resolution and that I would skip the next few generations, since the specs of the PV70 are adequate for my current DVD set up.

Assuming that I wouldn't even have to consider the financial implications of the upgrade, I still would wait out a few more iterations of the PV before I even consider it, since there will always be an annual improvement that would be tempting to get. So waiting out for the next one will not get you in a vicious upgrade cycle, wherein every time a new improvement comes in, you have to get it. A more reasonable time to upgrade will come along, but that's just me.

thanks for the input.

actually, the only financial implication is the price difference between pv70 and pv8 and depreciation of 3k! approx 9 or 10k ang idadagdag.

Previously, the pv7 was far inferior from pv70, but now there not much difference between pv8 and pv80.

Sa SD yata may malaking difference yang dalawa as observed by some guys on the other thread.

cos I had the chance to do a side by side comparison of 42PV70 & 42PV80(same panel as PV8) fed by same source & material: Behind Enemy Lines Blu-ray halos wala naman difference. OTB settings at dynamic both not yet calibrated, played movie for a while chose a colorful scene then paused. Standing 3ft. away, at first glance I really cant tell the difference and this was affirmed by a guy who's wife is paying for a PV70 at the counter at that time by saying 'pareho lang' and I said 'hmm mas black yata ito?'. Colors are the same, resolutions are the same it just took me a few seconds to realize that the PV80 has a deeper black but not night & day black, just slightly better black than the PV70. Didnt bother doing a demo for SD materials as I dont intend to use it on dvd viewing naman.

With a price difference of 29K 3wks. ago, I decided that PV80 is not for me. I'll just wait for a better technology to come . . . 3D ready TVs na yata ang kasunod I think Pio & Samsung launched it here already . . . material ang konti pa lang ;D
