sirs, how about comparison of this PCH and Egreat with this WDTV?

Im a newbie in the HD world but Im thinking of getting either a PCH, Egreat or WDTV.... syempre dun ako sa cheaper pero depende din sa features.

So ano po ba kaibahan ng WDTV sa PCH or Egreat? OR is WDTV a different category?

Thanks...

WDTV is just a media player while PCH, Egreat and HDX1000 are networked media player.  If you are after playing media files, HD and SD, WDTV is the cheaper alternative.  But if you want to play your media files over a network, want to download torrents, and access online contents, get a NMT.  It really boils down on your usage.

thanks sir. I guess WDTV then is just enough for me, just want to play movie files on my 32" LCDTV using HDMI, especially AVI and MKV movie files. Downloading can be done thru DSL on my PC.

The picture quality of WDTV is just the same as the PCH and Egreat, is that correct?

Also, with WDTV, how can I enjoy a good sound quality as well? I do not have an AVR, I am just using a DVD Home Theatre with 5.1 speaker setup and has DTS Sorround..... but it does not have HDMI and Optical In/Out....only Aux In. So where does the WDTV sound connect?

Thanks again....

I just bought an e31B from ehome... i am so happy with the service and the customer-centric treatment of the staff... especially Marvin.

Anyways, some questions...

1. i know it can read .sub subtitles, but when I press the "sub" button on the remote, it doesnt work... a triangle with exclamation mark appears (meaning, no function available!).
2. I have a complete hd-dvd rip of a movie in EVO format within 2 folders (video_ts and audio_ts)... only audio comes out, no visuals.

Any help will be great! Thanks.

did you turn the subtitle on in the main menu. once the feature is enabled and language selected (defaulted to english), then when you push the sub button in the remote, it should work.

The .SRT will work fine, but the .SUB and .IDX type will not work in eGreat (i don't know if the same in PopCorn hour). I am a Mediagate NAS user before and previously all of these subs works fine with that gadget. Sadly i gave this to my sister as a gift and bought an eGreat to watch HD movies

Better wait for the firmware update including the DTS decoding.

need more advice from you gurus...

Im new into this HD thing. My current setup (which I bought 2 years ago) is just a Philips 32" LCDTV HD-ready and it comes with a Philips DVD player with 5.1 speaker and it says it has DTS Sorround and Dolby Digital Pro-Logic II.

I do not have a AV Receiver. Wala pa pambili...

The LCDTV has 2 ports of HDMI...but the DVD player does not have HDMI, no Optical out, only has AUX in.

When I want to watch AVI movies from my laptop, I connect my laptop to the LCDTV using a VGA cable.

Now Im thinking of buying an NMT so I can have a stand-alone player for those movie files without having to use my laptop, moreso I can use HDMI cable instead of that VGA cable.

May I ask...with my current setup.... LCDTV with HDMI ports, DVD player without Optical Out but with only AUX In, I have NO Receiver.....what should I buy: WDTV, PCH or Egreat?

I am not after the price....well the cheaper the better of course....but I am after the product that will play with my current setup, that is without the need to buy a Receiver.

Any of the three will work with your setup ... WDTV is the cheapest and simplest to operate among the three that you mentioned ... the media players are actually independent of your DVD player

I was just informed that if I get WDTV or Egreat, I need to have a Receiver "or" Optical In/Out in my DVD player to be able to use its 5.1 speaker....otherwise walang lalabas na audio especially those mkv files in DTS???

I forgot to mention, I wish kase to output the audio to my DVD player's 5.1 speakers....not just sa speakers ng LCDTV. Thats the reason why I mention my DVD player as one of the factors to consider...

better to wait for the DTS decoding firmware upgrade sir, instead of buying an expensive receiver/speakers with optical in. Since PopCorn Hour, was the 1st one to update the firmware with DTS Decoding, eGreat and WD TV HD will soon follow.

In my setup, i just connected the HDMI cable to my LCD TV. For some movies that i can't wait to watch with DTS, i use AudioConverter software to include AC3 track back to the MKV file, so i can watch it in my TV. In Case i have now the budget to buy a receiver i will just select the Audio DTS track of the HD file.

for the firmware waiting...I think its just a matter of time now :)

Patience is a virtue IMHO

Sir,

If that is the case, your DVD player also have an amplifier and DTS decoder (as mentioned above - supporting DTS surround) ... Could you verify if what is the port of the Auxilliary Input?  If it is digital coax (single RCA port with orange color), you should be able to connect NMT's on that port and output 5.1 DTS signal.

Regarding DTS decoding on NMt's, some units supports DTS passthrough (like the PCH A110 and TViX M6500 and 7000), but you would still be needing DTS decoder (normally through AVR) to output the DTS signal.

DVD player with 5.1 speakers?  Hindi kaya home-theater-in-a-box (HTIB) yan?  If not HTIB, does your DVD player have inputs for 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer?  I think it's best if you specify what DVD player you are using so that we can advise you better.  At any rate, the only way to output 5.1 audio from WDTV, egreat or pch to your dvd player is to make sure your decoder (dvd player in your case) allows digital input from external sources either via coaxial or optical input.  If analog input lang meron (red and white RCA input), I doubt if you can get 5.1 output.

I agree WDTV is the cheapest player for you especially since you didn't mention about networking.  [Actually, there are other players cheaper than WDTV if you only want to play avi files but they're not as popular).

after seeing this new nmt, a new budget combo came to my mind:

Kaober K100 + Sakura 387a  ;D ;D ;D
nmt with 5.1 out + budget avr with 5.1 in, astig diba? all you need is a 32" crt with component input that accepts (and outputs) 720p  ;D ayos na!

sirs, hehe sensya na talagang newbie ako sa mga bagay nato.

yung sinasabi kong DVD player ko is HTIB nga (ngayon ko lang nalaman ibig sabihin ng HTIB).

the AUX IN of it is not the single port Orange color....but two-port na Red and White. It has its own 5 speakers + 1 subwoofer. Yung player ko may mga nakasulat na "DTS Sorround" and "Dolby Digital Pro-Logic II".

So with that, which NMT do I need na kahit stereo sound lang ang lalabas?

Kelangan ko parin ba ng Receiver or a new HTIB na may Optical Out....para ma-enjoy ang 5.1 audio?

Thank you very much for your inputs, I am slowly learning stuff from here :)

All the NMT's have the stereo out that would work on your setup  ... wala lang munang DTS, etc. - needs digital input for these signals (HDMI, digital coax, or optical)
