Topic: XBMC: What OS?

Tried XMBC on 64 bit Ubuntu ... lots of problems (with me ) so I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy another Windows license.  Should I use the 32 bit or 64 bit version (bought 8Gb of RAM)?

I do have a soft spot for Open Source.  Who doesn't like a freebie?  However in the 25 years I've been using all sorts of open source, I still have never been able to shift my desktop.  IMHO, Windows is just better though servers are a different matter for me.  Does anyone have a idiot-proof open source, non-XBMClive, desktop solution for an HTPC?

OT:  About 25 years ago I remember buying 16 KILO BYTES of DRAM for about what I just paid for 4 GIGA bytes of RAM.  Galing.

I don't use XBMC, but between Windows 7 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit, there's little reason to consider 32-bit unless you're running a lot of legacy applications imho.

As for RAM, that is very true. The contrast just gets better once you factor inflation into the mix. 8 gigs of RAM can't even buy you a fancy dinner nowadays.

because a 32-bit version can only run up to 3gb maximum limit.
Yes, you can use your 8gb ram in a 32 bit version, but..sayang naman kasi 3gb lang ang mababasa ng system mo.

I have tried Ubuntu with XBMC and I always have problems with video acceleration on my ATI videocard. Linux has better drivers or are more accustomed to NVIDIA.  I just don't know how updated Ubuntu is with HD audio and playing Bluray.  I've read that it can be done but with a lot of workarounds.

I am still sticking with Windows when using HTPC applications but on desktop use, I use Linux Mint and Ubuntu.

I've got Ubuntu 11 (something) "working" but am also running into a lot of bugs.  Video playback worked at some point but eventually for reasons I do not know suddenly stopped.  While I do enjoy a challenge, I really don't have the time.   

The P6k (more or less) FPP for MS Win 7 Home Premium is looking more and more attractive.

Perhaps you can still buy an OEM license since your computer is just a few days old. The retailer may still consider it as "new."

Bro try Linux Mint 12 64bit.  It is Ubuntu under the hood with a Windows-like GUI.  All Ubuntu programs are compatible with it.  It has all the essential programs and codecs you need as compared to the bareboned Ubuntu.  You can download it here.

Just an update.  I installed an NVIDIA GT520 on my desktop running Linux Mint 12 and XBMC is now running smoothly with no hiccups.
